Learning Curves for Robot-Assisted Pedicle Screw Placement: Analysis of Operative Time for 234 Cases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Robot-assisted pedicle screw placement is associated with greater accuracy, reduced radiation, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and fewer complications than freehand screw placement. However, it can be associated with longer operative times and an extended training period. We report the initial experience of a surgeon using a robot system at an academic medical center. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients undergoing robot-assisted pedicle screw placement at a single tertiary care institution by 1 surgeon from 10/2017 to 05/2022. Linear regressio

Robotic-Assisted Single-Position Prone Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion: Indications, Techniques, and Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) is a widely utilized minimally invasive surgical procedure for anterior fusion of the lumbar spine. However, posterior decompression or instrumentation often necessitates patient repositioning, which is associated with increased operative time and time under anesthesia1-3. The single-position prone transpsoas approach is a technique that allows surgeons to access both the anterior and posterior aspects of the spine, bypassing the need for intraoperative repositioning and therefore optimizing efficiency4. The use of robotic assistance allows fo

Different approaches for bladder neck dissection during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy: the Aalst technique.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder neck dissection is one of the most delicate surgical steps of robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) [1, 2], and it may affect surgical margins rate and functional outcomes [3, 4]. Given the relationship between outcomes and surgical experience [5-7], it is crucial to implement a step-by-step approach for each surgical step of the procedure, especially in the most challenging part of the intervention. In this video compilation, we described the techniques for bladder neck dissection utilized at OLV Hospital (Aalst, Belgium). SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: We illustrated five

[Robot-assisted Thoracic Surgery for Mediastinal and Chest Wall Tumors:Atypical Surgical Approaches by the Tumor Localization].

Surgery for mediastinal and chest wall tumors requires various approaches, including open and thoracoscopic, depending on the size and localization of the tumor. While robotic surgery for anterior mediastinal tumors has become a standardized approach, the approaches for tumors of the superior, middle, and posterior mediastinum, in particular, have not been generalized. Our institution introduced robotic surgery in 2017 and has performed 785 robot-assisted surgeries until November 2022. In this report, we describe our clinical experience with robotic surgery for mediastinal tumors, which requir

Current indications and patient selection for transoral robotic surgery in head and neck cancer - a brief review.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) continues to gain momentum in minimally invasive surgery. Not only is TORS potentially curative in many cases, but it also addresses the growing emphasis on functional outcomes and quality of life. The main anatomical areas in which TORS is used are the oropharynx and larynx; however, it is becoming increasingly common in thyroid surgery and neck dissections. With growing popularity, the number of indications for TORS in oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancer also increases. However, not all patients are good candidates for this technique, and thus patient selectio

Emulating the Effective Ankle Stiffness of Commercial Prosthetic Feet Using a Robotic Prosthetic Foot Emulator.

Prosthetic foot selection for individuals with lower limb amputation relies primarily on clinician judgment. The prosthesis user rarely has an opportunity to provide experiential input into the decision by trying different feet. A prosthetic foot emulator (PFE) is a robotic prosthetic foot that could facilitate prosthesis users' ability to trial feet with different mechanical characteristics. Here, we introduce a procedure by which a robotic PFE is configured to emulate the sagittal plane effective ankle stiffness of a range of commercial prosthetic forefeet. Mechanical testing was used to col

A novel air microfluidics-enabled soft robotic sleeve: Toward realizing innovative lymphedema treatment.

A proof of concept of a novel air microfluidics-enabled soft robotic sleeve to enable lymphedema treatment is presented. Compression sleeves represent the current, suboptimal standard of care, and stationary pumps assist with lymph drainage; however, effective systems that are truly wearable while performing daily activities are very scarce. This problematic trade-off between performance and wearability requires a new solution, which is addressed by an innovative microfluidic device. Its novelty lies in the use of light, small, and inexpensive air microfluidic chips (35 × 20 × 5 mm3 in size) t
