Through their lens: A photovoice study exploring pregnant and postpartum women's experiences, coping strategies and barriers to heat adaptation in an urban township in South Africa.

Rising global temperatures and heatwaves pose major health risks, particularly for pregnant women, infants and other vulnerable groups. Using Photovoice, we aimed to foreground how pregnant and postpartum women in an urban township in Tshwane, South Africa, experience and cope with heat stress. Fourteen women participated in two structured workshops held during the hot season (December 2023-January 2024). The first included reflective discussions on coping with heat and basic photography training. Over two weeks, participants captured over 300 images using disposable cameras or mobile phones.

Insights from the psychedelic experience integration session: Verbatims differentiate 3-month abstinence in alcohol use disorder with depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy shows promise in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but therapeutic mechanisms remain poorly understood. Previous qualitative studies have described potential processes such as gaining insights, altered self-perception, connectedness, and changes in coping, yet findings remain limited and inconsistent in AUD, and little is known about early markers of therapeutic response. METHODS: We conducted a mixed quantitative-qualitative analysis of first integration sessions in the Psilocybin Alcohol Depression (PAD) randomized controlled trial. Only participants

Non-partner sexual violence against women: a mixed-methods study protocol on prevalence, patterns, consequences, and coping strategies.

BACKGROUND: Non-partner sexual violence (NPSV) against women is a serious public health concern with substantial implications for mental and sexual health. However, data on its prevalence, patterns—including victim–perpetrator relationship, event context, and nature of acts—and related outcomes remain limited. This study investigates the lifetime prevalence and patterns of NPSV among women in Iran, its psychosexual impacts, and victims’ coping strategies. METHODS: This study employs a sequential mixed-methods design, with primary emphasis on the quantitative phase. The initial phase involves a

Layoff threat and extra effort: how threat and coping appraisals drive extra-role behavior via protection motivation.

Drawing on protection motivation theory (PMT), this study investigates how employees respond cognitively and behaviorally to layoff threats in China's megacity Internet sector. Study 1 employed a cross-sectional survey of 423 employees from Beijing Internet firms, and Study 2 conducted a scenario-based experiment to strengthen causal inference. Structural equation modeling and path analysis were conducted to test a mediation model linking threat and coping appraisals to extra-role behavior (ERB) via protection motivation. Results show that perceived severity, vulnerability, response efficacy a

Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum under heat strain: Visibilising lived experiences and coping practices of women in rural Zimbabwe through an adapted participatory Photovoice approach.

Extreme heat, intensified by climate change, is an escalating global health threat linked to preterm birth, stillbirth, hypertensive disorders, and low birth weight. Yet little is known about how pregnant and postpartum women in low-resource settings experience and adapt to heat as a lived condition. In sub-Saharan Africa, where livelihoods depend on outdoor labour and health systems remain fragile, women's thermal vulnerability is compounded by social and infrastructural inequities. This study explores how pregnant and postpartum women in rural Zimbabwe experience and adapt to extreme heat, a

Computational simulation of intervention targets: elucidating coping style mechanisms in anxiety and depressive symptom networks in community populations.

BACKGROUND: Depressive and anxiety disorders represent globally significant mental health burdens, imposing substantial impacts on individuals, societies, and healthcare infrastructure. In China, nationally representative epidemiological studies report a lifetime prevalence of 7.6% for anxiety disorders and 6.6% for depressive disorders. Both conditions demonstrate age-dependent heterogeneity, with older populations exhibiting significantly higher susceptibility and elevated comorbidity. METHODS: The cross-sectional study of community populations constructed Ising network models for different

Dyadic coping and marital quality in couples facing cancer: A gendered analysis of young and middle-aged partners.

This study aimed to examine the actor and partner effects of dyadic coping (DC) on marital quality in young and middle-aged couples coping with cancer and the potential moderating role of gender at the actor and partner levels using actor-partner interdependence moderation models. A total of 229 couples completed the Quality of Marriage Index and the Dyadic Coping Inventory. The results revealed the following: (a) Both patients' and their spouses' positive DC interacted with their own marital quality. (b) While positive DC showed actor/partner effects unaffected by gender, negative DC exhibite

Experiential avoidance moderates improvement in affect through a CBT-focused ecological momentary intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) can deliver coping skills in real time. Experiential avoidance (EA), the tendency to evade distressing internal experiences, is a transdiagnostic process linked to emotional disorders and suicide risk that may influence responsiveness to momentary interventions. This study examined whether baseline EA moderated changes in momentary affect during a four-week Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based EMI among adults recently discharged from psychiatric hospitalization. METHOD: Adults hospitalized for emotional difficulties and/or suicide risk

Adaptation in emergent adulthood for persons with prior experience in residential youth care in Norway: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The adversities experienced by youth placed in Residential Youth Care (RYC) challenge their development through adolescence and into adulthood. Yet, we know little about how they adapt during the transition into emergent adulthood. Here, we examine their socioeconomic and civil status and psychosocial functioning, how they compare with peers, and whether there are systematic variations across sex and age. METHODS: Ten years after the initial assessment of 400 12-20-year-olds residing in RYC in Norway, we conducted a follow-up assessment when they were ages 22-30, enrolling 157 (52

Emotion Regulation Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder: Results of a Stage II Randomized Clinical Efficacy Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite strong links between emotion regulation (ER) difficulties and problem drinking, few studies have directly addressed whether interventions that target ER positively impact drinking outcomes. In a prior Stage 1a/1b behavioral therapies development study, we developed an Emotion Regulation Treatment (ERT) for alcohol use disorder (AUD) that included strategies addressing prolonged direct experiencing of emotion, mindfulness, and coping and distress tolerance. Results demonstrated the feasibility and initial efficacy of ERT as a supplement to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

The Role of Coping Strategies, Impulsivity and Hypersexuality on the Fear of Offending Among Minor Attracted Persons (MAPs).

Despite generally low rates of sexual offenses among Minor attracted persons (MAPs) and their high desire not to engage in such acts, concerns about the possibility of offending remain significant for some individuals within this population. Consequently, how MAPs deal with this fear is an important question that needs to be addressed. In this study, 299 male MAPs were recruited online to examine how the reliance on different coping strategies impacts their fear of engaging in sexual behaviors with minors. In study 1, binary logistic regression analyses revealed that waiting for the fear to pa
