The aims of this study were to evaluate the epidemiology of nosocomial candidemia in a large teaching hospital in Brescia, Italy, and the in vitro antifungal susceptibility of isolates. We analyzed 196 isolates causing fungemia in patients admitted in our hospital, between January 2009 and December 2015. Strains were identified by VITEK 2 and MALDI-TOF MS. The aim of this study was to investigate the activity of diosgenin against Naegleria fowleri trophozoites at the cellular and molecular levels. Diosgenin (100 μg/ml; 241.2 μM) had a 100% inhibitory effect on N. fowleri trophozoites (5 x 10(5) cell/ml). During a 50-month period, we identified 91 episodes of fungal infection in 72 liver transplant recipients (23.8%). Candida species accounted for 83.5% of cases. We present a case of endonasal leishmaniasis diagnosed on a frozen section biopsy specimen obtained from a 47-year-old woman treated with corticosteroids and anti-TNFα for rheumatoid arthritis.
