The role of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in COVID-19: association with respiratory failure and predictive role for outcome.

We aimed to assess the potential role of Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in conditioning respiratory function and pulmonary vasoregulation during Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infection. Within 72 h from admission, samples from 90 COVID-19 patients were assessed for ADMA, SDMA, L-arginine concentrations. In addition to classical statistics, patients were also clustered by a machine learning approach according to similar features. Multivariable analysis showed that C-reactive protein (OR 1.012), serum ADMA (OR 4.652), white blood cells (OR = 1.118) and SOFA (OR

Kynurenine and Hemoglobin as Sex-Specific Variables in COVID-19 Patients: A Machine Learning and Genetic Algorithms Approach.

Differences in clinical manifestations, immune response, metabolic alterations, and outcomes (including disease severity and mortality) between men and women with COVID-19 have been reported since the pandemic outbreak, making it necessary to implement sex-specific biomarkers for disease diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to identify sex-associated differences in COVID-19 patients by means of a genetic algorithm (GALGO) and machine learning, employing support vector machine (SVM) and logistic regression (LR) for the data analysis. Both algorithms identified kynurenine and hemoglobin as

Changes in Functional Connectivity Predict Outcome of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with changes in brain functional connectivity (FC). These changes may be related to the mechanism of action of rTMS and explain the variability in clinical outcome. We examined changes in electroencephalographic FC during the first rTMS treatment in 109 subjects treated with 10 Hz stimulation to left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. All subjects subsequently received 30 treatments and clinical response was defined as ≥40% improvement in the inventory of depressive symptomatology-30 SR

Sleep-like slow oscillations improve visual classification through synaptic homeostasis and memory association in a thalamo-cortical model.

The occurrence of sleep passed through the evolutionary sieve and is widespread in animal species. Sleep is known to be beneficial to cognitive and mnemonic tasks, while chronic sleep deprivation is detrimental. Despite the importance of the phenomenon, a complete understanding of its functions and underlying mechanisms is still lacking. In this paper, we show interesting effects of deep-sleep-like slow oscillation activity on a simplified thalamo-cortical model which is trained to encode, retrieve and classify images of handwritten digits. During slow oscillations, spike-timing-dependent-plas

Maternal overnutrition leads to cognitive and neurochemical abnormalities in C57BL/6 mice.

Objectives: Epidemiological studies have linked maternal obesity with metabolic as well as psychiatric disorders in the progeny. However, very little is known how maternal overnutrition may affect the cognitive abilities of the offspring. Methods: Here, we tested the hypothesis whether maternal high-fat diet (HFD) exposure in mice may induce long-term cognitive impairments and neurochemical dysfunctions in the offspring during different age trajectories. Results: We found that maternal HFD led to cognitive disabilities in adult offspring compared to controls. It was mostly evident in a referen

Teacher candidates' mastery of phoneme-grapheme correspondence: massed versus distributed practice in teacher education.

Matching phonemes (speech sounds) to graphemes (letters and letter combinations) is an important aspect of decoding (translating print to speech) and encoding (translating speech to print). Yet, many teacher candidates do not receive explicit training in phoneme-grapheme correspondence. Difficulty with accurate phoneme production and/or lack of understanding of sound-symbol correspondence can make it challenging for teachers to (a) identify student errors on common assessments and (b) serve as a model for students when teaching beginning reading or providing remedial reading instruction. First case report of inherited Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome associated with a novel EP300 variant.

BACKGROUND: Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS; OMIM #180849, #613684) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic condition characterized by broad thumbs and halluces, facial dysmorphism, short stature and variable degree of intellectual disability. RSTS is associated with mutations in CREBBP and EP300 genes in 50-60% and 5-8% of cases, respectively. The majority of cases are de novo heterozygous mutations. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we describe a familial RSTS case, associated with a novel EP300 mutation. The proband was a 9 years old female, with mild learning difficulties. Her mother, who also had lea

Anxiety and oppositional behavior profiles among youth with selective mutism.

UNLABELLED: Selective mutism (SM) is a debilitating condition in which a child does not speak in social situations where speech is expected. The clinical conceptualization of SM has been debated historically, with evidence pointing partly to anxious and oppositional behavior profiles. Behavioral characteristics were examined in a clinical sample of 57 youth formally diagnosed with selective mutism. Parents rated children across internalizing and externalizing behaviors on the Child Behavior Checklist. Eighteen highly rated items were subjected to exploratory and then confirmatory factor analys

Asperger syndrome and "non-verbal learning problems" in a longitudinal perspective: neuropsychological and social adaptive outcome in early adult life.

Co-existence of Asperger syndrome (AS) and non-verbal learning disability (NLD) has been proposed based on the observation that people with AS tend to have significantly higher verbal than performance IQ (VIQ > PIQ by ≥ 15 points), one of the core features of NLD. In the present study we examined neuropsychological and social adaptive profiles with "non-verbal learning problems" associated with NLD in a group of individuals with AS followed from childhood into early adult life. The group was divided into three subgroups: (i) persistent NLD (P-NLD), i.e. NLD (VIQ > PIQ) both in childhood and ea

Brain sensitivity to print emerges when children learn letter-speech sound correspondences.

The acquisition of reading skills is a major landmark process in a human's cognitive development. On the neural level, a new functional network develops during this time, as children typically learn to associate the well-known sounds of their spoken language with unfamiliar characters in alphabetic languages and finally access the meaning of written words, allowing for later reading. A critical component of the mature reading network located in the left occipito-temporal cortex, termed the "visual word-form system" (VWFS), exhibits print-sensitive activation in readers. When and how the sensit

Treatment of gastric marginal zone lymphoma of MALT type.

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Gastric marginal zone lymphomas of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT type) represent approximately half of all cases of lymphomas arising in the stomach. They have been strongly associated with chronic Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) gastritis. Treatment aimed at eradicating this infection results in lymphoma remissions in the majority of patients (approximately 80%) and this represents a unique case of anticancer treatment based on the eradication of the causing factor. AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW: The effects of H. pylori eradication in suppressing the growth

The acallosal mouse strain I/LnJ: a putative model of ADHD?

ADHD has been sometimes associated to a defective interhemispheric cross-talk caused by hypoplasia of the corpus callosum. The inbred mouse strain I/LnJ shows total callosal agenesis with complete penetrance, and behavioral features which resemble ADHD. In conditioned learning tasks, as well as in paradigms of spontaneous behavior. I/LnJ mice, as compared to other inbred strains, show lower learning scores, impulsiveness, and significantly higher locomotor activity, albeit with considerable individual variations. In order to disentangle the influences of the genetic background from the effects

Chronic administration of alcohol in the developing rat: expression of functional tolerance and alcohol olfactory aversions.

Three experiments were designed to evaluate the acquisition and expression of tolerance to ethanol in preweanling rats. Administrations were begun on Postnatal Day 13 (PD13) and continued, on alternating days, through PD23. Following either three or five administrations of a 2.5 g/kg dose of ethanol, animals expressed tolerance to the motor-impairing consequences of acute ethanol, as measured through attenuated latencies to perform a righting reflex. However, no tolerance was evident when it was assessed through the hypothermic response to ethanol delivery (Experiment 1). The results of subseq

Behavioral covariation in the treatment of chronic pain.

The successful use of operant procedures to alter behaviors associated with various medical conditions suggests that such behaviors may be learned and that the principles of learning may be applied not only to treatment but also to the study of the pathogenesis of illness behavior. The present study, conducted within an ongoing neuromuscular research project, assessed the covariation of behaviors associated with chronic pain within and across behavioral and drug approaches to treatment. Problems of screaming and five other behaviors (including self-reports of pain) were measured across conditi

Surface-based cortical thickness and gyrification mapping with data-driven prediction of cognitive impairment in prediabetes.

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes is a serious health condition characterized by blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. It remains unclear whether alterations in cortical morphology occur during the prediabetic stage. This study aimed to investigate changes in cortical thickness and gyrification in individuals with prediabetes, and to explore whether these changes can predict cognitive performance using a machine learning approach. METHODS: T1-weighted MRI scans were acquired from 48 patients with prediabetes and 42 healthy controls. Sur

Reinforcement Learning for Intraoperative Hypotension Management with Consideration to Postoperative Acute Kidney Injury.

KEY POINTS: Intraoperative hypotension is associated with postoperative AKI, which is a common and morbid postoperative complication. We developed a reinforcement learning model to guide intraoperative fluids and vasopressors, avoiding hypotension and postoperative AKI. The model's policy showcases the potential to lower postoperative AKI and improve outcomes driven by intraoperative hypotension. BACKGROUND: Traditional methods of surgical decision making heavily rely on human experience and prompt actions, which are variable. A data-driven system that generates treatment recommendations base
