A Unified Functional Network Target for Deep Brain Stimulation in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Multiple deep brain stimulation (DBS) targets have been proposed for treating intractable obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Here, we investigated whether stimulation effects of different target sites would be mediated by one common or several segregated functional brain networks. METHODS: First, seeding from active electrodes of 4 OCD patient cohorts (N = 50) receiving DBS to anterior limb of the internal capsule or subthalamic nucleus zones, optimal functional connectivity profiles for maximal Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale improvements were calculated and cross-validat

Electrochemical degradation of psychotropic pharmaceutical compounds from municipal wastewater and neurotoxicity evaluations.

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are released daily into surface water, and their recalcitrant properties often require tertiary treatment. Electrochemical oxidation (EO) is often used as an alternative way to eliminate these compounds from water, although the literature barely addresses the neurotoxic effects of residual by-products. Therefore, this study investigated the performance of EO in the removal of five CECs (alprazolam, clonazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, and carbamazepine) and performed neurotoxicity evaluations of residual EO by-products in Wistar rat brain hippocampal slices.

Development of a Low-Cost Cotton-Tipped Electrochemical Immunosensor for the Detection of SARS-CoV-2.

Collection of nasopharyngeal samples using swabs followed by the transfer of the virus into a solution and an RNA extraction step to perform reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the primary method currently used for the diagnosis of COVID-19. However, the need for several reagents and steps and the high cost of PCR hinder its worldwide implementation to contain the outbreak. Here, we report a cotton-tipped electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus antigen. Unlike the reported approaches, we integrate

The benefits of carbon black, gold and magnetic nanomaterials for point-of-harvest electrochemical quantification of domoic acid.

Gold nanostars (GNST), gold nanospheres (GNP) and carbon black (CB) are chosen as alternative nanomaterials to modify carbon screen-printed electrodes (c-SPEs). The resulting three kinds of modified c-SPEs (GNP-SPE, CB-SPE and GNSP-SPE) were electrochemically and microscopically characterized and compared with standardized c-SPEs after pretreatment with phosphate buffer by pre-anodization (pre-SPE). The results show outstanding electrochemical performance of the carbon black-modified SPEs which show low transient current, low capacitance and good porosity. A competitive chronoamperometric immu

Effects of modular ion-funnel technology onto analysis of breath VOCs by means of real-time mass spectrometry.

Proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) is a powerful tool for real-time monitoring of trace concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The sensitivity of PTR-ToF-MS also depends on the ability to effectively focus and transmit ions from the relatively high-pressure drift tube (DT) to the low-pressure mass analyzer. In the present study, a modular ion-funnel (IF) is placed adjacent to the DT of a PTR-ToF-MS instrument to improve the ion-focusing. IF consists of a series of electrodes with gradually decreasing orifice diameters. Radio frequency (RF) volt

Comparison of tractography-assisted to atlas-based targeting for deep brain stimulation in essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Direct targeting of the dentato-rubro-thalamic tract is efficacious in DBS for tremor suppression. OBJECTIVES: We sought to compare outcomes and optimal stimulation parameters for tremor control using the technique of directly targeting the dentato-rubro-thalamic tract to those who underwent indirect targeting of the ventral intermediate nucleus thalamus. METHODS: Twenty consecutive essential tremor patients obtained preoperative diffusion MRIs, where the dentato-rubro-thalamic tract was individually drawn and used to directly target the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalam

Use of Spinal Cord Stimulation in Elderly Patients with Multi-Factorial Chronic Lumbar and Non-Radicular Lower Extremity Pain.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an effective treatment for chronic back and limb pain. The criteria for use of SCS for specific problems such as failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS), peripheral neuropathic pain and residual pain after joint replacement is well established. With an aging population, there are more patients presenting with a combination of various multi-factorial chronic pain problems rather than from a single clear cause. It is not uncommon to see patients with chronic back pain years after spine surgery with new additional pain in the area of joint replacement or due to periph

Pulmonary vein isolation using the Rhythmia mapping system: Verification of intracardiac signals using the Orion mini-basket catheter.

BACKGROUND: During pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), a circular lasso catheter is positioned at the junction between the left atrium (LA) and the pulmonary vein (PV) to confirm PVI. The Rhythmia mapping system uses the Orion mini-basket catheter with 64 electrodes instead of the lasso catheter. However, its feasibility to determine PVI has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare signals between the mini-basket and lasso catheters at the LA-PV junction. METHODS: In 12 patients undergoing PVI using Rhythmia, the mini-basket and lasso catheters were placed simultaneo

Heterogeneity of muscle damage induced by electrostimulation: a multimodal MRI study.

PURPOSE: Neuromuscular electrostimulation (NMES) leads to a spatially fixed, synchronous, and superficial motor unit recruitment, which could induce muscle damage. Therefore, the extent of muscle damage and its spatial occurrence were expected to be heterogeneous across and along the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscles. The aim of the present study was to characterize muscle spatial heterogeneity in QF damage after a single bout of isometric NMES using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Twenty-five young healthy males participated in this study. MRI investigations consisted of

Asymmetric wavefront aberrations and pupillary shapes induced by electrical stimulation of ciliary nerve in cats measured with compact wavefront aberrometer.

To investigate the changes in the wavefront aberrations and pupillary shape in response to electrical stimulation of the branches of the ciliary nerves in cats. Seven eyes of seven cats were studied under general anesthesia. Trains of monophasic pulses (current, 0.1 to 1.0 mA; duration, 0.5 ms/phase; frequency, 5 to 40 Hz) were applied to the lateral or medial branch of the short ciliary nerve near the posterior pole of the eye. A pair of electrodes was hooked onto one or both branch of the short ciliary nerve. The electrodes were placed about 5 mm from the scleral surface. The wavefront aberr

Progressive sleep and electroencephalogram changes in mice carrying the Huntington's disease mutation.

Sleep disturbances in Huntington's disease may be deleterious to the cognitive performance, affective behaviour, and general well-being of patients, but a comprehensive description of the progression of changes in sleep and electroencephalogram in Huntington's disease has never been conducted. Here we studied sleep and electroencephalogram disturbances in a transgenic mouse model of Huntington's disease (R6/2 mice). We implanted 10 R6/2 mice and five wild-type littermates with electromyography electrodes, frontofrontal and frontoparietal electroencephalogram electrodes and then recorded sleep/

Electromyographic activity in the shoulder musculature during resistance training exercises of the ipsilateral upper limb while wearing a shoulder orthosis.

BACKGROUND: Resistance training is usually postponed until 3 months after rotator cuff surgery to prevent the damaging effects of high muscle stress on the repaired tendon. After upper limb immobilization, noninjured muscles as well as the repaired muscles are affected by long-term inactivity. Exercises with minimal cuff activity may be appropriate in the early postoperative period, so we aimed to quantify the effect of resistance exercises on the muscle activity of a semi-immobilized upper limb. METHOD: Fifteen shoulder muscles of the dominant limb of 14 healthy subjects were evaluated by el

Ovine model for clear-cut study on the role of cholecystokinin in antral, small intestinal and gallbladder motility.

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is one of the major gastrointestinal hormones involved in the control of digestive tract and gallbladder motility. Its action involves several mechanisms. The ovine model was developed in order to further explore the role of CCK in gastric, small intestinal and gallbladder motility under various experimental conditions. Five Merino sheep were used with bipolar electrodes implanted to their antrum, entire small intestine and gallbladder as well as strain gauge force transducers were attached to the duodenum and gallbladder fundus, near the electrodes.
