Psychophysiological assessment and correction of spatial disorientation during simulated Orion spacecraft re-entry.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has identified a potential risk of spatial disorientation, motion sickness, and degraded performance to astronauts during re-entry and landing of the proposed Orion crew vehicle. The purpose of this study was to determine if a physiological training procedure, Autogenic-Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE), can mitigate these adverse effects. Fourteen men and six women were assigned to two groups (AFTE, no-treatment Control) matched for motion sickness susceptibility and gender. All subjects received a standard rotating chair test to determ

Assessing Heart Rate Variability As a Surrogate Measure of Cardiac Autonomic Function in Chronic Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury.

Background: Although cardiac autonomic dysfunction is a contributing factor for cardiovascular disease development in individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI), it remains poorly understood. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis has the potential to non-invasively assess the cardiac autonomic nervous system. The study objectives are (a) to determine if there are differences in HRV measures across neurological level of impairment (NLI) and American Spinal Cord Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) subgroups, and (b) to determine if there is a relationship between HRV frequency measures (l

Guanfacine Attenuates Adverse Effects of Dronabinol (THC) on Working Memory in Adolescent-Onset Heavy Cannabis Users: A Pilot Study.

The cannabinoid-1 receptor (CB1R) agonist Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive constituent of cannabis, adversely effects working memory performance in humans. The α2A-adrenoceptor (AR) agonist guanfacine improves working memory performance in humans. The authors aimed to determine the effects of short-term (6 days) treatment with guanfacine on adverse cognitive effects produced by THC. Employing a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design, the cognitive, subjective, and cardiovascular effects produced by oral THC (20 mg) administration were determined twice in the same

Normal Newborn Heart Rate in the First Five Minutes of Life Assessed by Dry-Electrode Electrocardiography.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence regarding the heart rate (HR) during the first minutes of life. Nonetheless, resuscitative actions within the first minute are partly guided by different HR levels. The advent of an electrocardiographic (ECG) HR sensor with early HR detection has provided the opportunity to study changes immediately following delivery. OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to determine immediately following delivery: (i) the time to achievement of reliable ECG signals using dry electrodes, (ii) changes in HR, and (iii) the influence of the onset of breathing and cord clamping on

Inactive Matrix Gla-Protein Is Associated With Arterial Stiffness in an Adult Population-Based Study.

Increased pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a marker of aortic stiffness and an independent predictor of mortality. Matrix Gla-protein (MGP) is a vascular calcification inhibitor that needs vitamin K to be activated. Inactive MGP, known as desphospho-uncarboxylated MGP (dp-ucMGP), can be measured in plasma and has been associated with various cardiovascular markers, cardiovascular outcomes, and mortality. In this study, we hypothesized that high levels of dp-ucMGP are associated with increased PWV. We recruited participants via a multicenter family-based cross-sectional study in Switzerland. Dp-ucM

Association of Helicobacter pylori infection with the metabolic syndrome among HIV-infected black Africans receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy.

INTRODUCTION: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is common in human immune deficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Immune deficiencies caused by HIV give rise to numerous opportunistic gastrointestinal pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori, the commonest cause of chronic gastritis. The study sought to determine the relationship between H pylori infection and the MetS among HIV-infected clinic attendees. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out in a specialised heart clinic in Kinshasa, DR Congo. Between January 2004 and Decembe

The Surgical Apgar Score in esophagectomy.

OBJECTIVE: The Surgical Apgar Score is a validated prognostic tool that is based on select intraoperative variables (heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and blood loss). It has been shown to be a strong predictor of morbidity and mortality in a variety of surgical populations. Esophagectomy for malignancy represents a unique subset of patients at high risk for postoperative complications. This study assessed the ability of a modified esophagectomy Surgical Apgar Score (eSAS) to predict 30-day major morbidity. METHODS: A retrospective review included 168 patients who underwent elective esophag

Effects of obstructive sleep apnea on hemodynamic parameters in patients entering cardiac rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent form of sleep-disordered breathing. Evidence suggests that OSA may lead to cardiac remodeling, although the literature is equivocal. Previous literature suggests a high percentage of individuals entering a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program also have OSA. The objective of this study was to determine whether resting hemodynamic variables were altered in OSA subjects entering CR compared with those without OSA, as determined by impedance cardiography. METHODS: Subjects entering an early outpatient CR program were screened for OSA using an a

Readmissions related to antihypertensive medications used in chronic hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: In hemodialysis, hypertension is treated by removing excess fluid and antihypertensive therapy. Commonly, the antihypertensives used to treat hypertension in earlier stages of kidney disease are continued as the patient progresses into end-stage renal disease and begins dialysis, without much evidence for benefit. METHODS: This study is a single center, retrospective chart review that included hemodialysis patients admitted for congestive heart failure (CHF), fluid overload, or pulmonary edema as determined by ICD-9 code (428.x, 276.6, 518.4, 506.1).
