Therapeutic effects on cefmenoxime hemihydrochloride (CMX, Bestcall), a new synthetic cephem antibiotic, were examined in the treatment of various infections complicated with hematological diseases. The number of patients treated with CMX was 37 including 5 cases of sepsis or suspected sepsis, 14 cases of pneumonia or suspected pneumonia, 5 cases of upper respiratory diseases, 2 cases of urinary tract infections and 11 cases of other infections. Eighty-nine lymph node biopsies were performed on 82 patients with lymphadenopathy, immunosuppression, and possible acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The 21 patients with diagnoses of lymphoma or Kaposi's sarcoma were older, had more sexual contacts, and were sexually active for more years than patients with benign diagnoses. Staphylococcal pyrogenic exotoxin type C (PE-C) suppressed synthesis of IgM antibodies to sheep erythrocytes by in vitro cultures of murine and rabbit splenocytes. Therapeutically unresponsive erosive or ulcerative lesions caused by the herpes simplex virus developed in five patients with advanced cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. The chronic progressive character of the herpetic infection probably was the consequence of immunosuppression resulting from advanced lymphoma or its treatment. Herpes simplex infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous ulcerations in patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas.

The study describes passive transfer of diabetes mellitus by transplantation of spleen cells from donor mice infected with a diabetogenic encephalomyocarditis virus. Inbred normal C57 mice were used as both donors and recipients, and other recipients were C57 athymic, nude mice. Transplants were made in two series after 12 and 22 days duration of infection of the donors, respectively. All recipients became diabetic.
