BACKGROUND: Exposure to high ambient levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) enhances the bronchial inflammatory reaction to allergen in humans. We tested whether this NO2 effect occurs also in the upper airways.
METHODS: Sixteen allergic subjects with rhinitis and mild asthma were exposed at rest to either purified air or 500 microg/m3 NO2 for 30 minutes, followed 4 hours later by a nasal allergen challenge. Nasal lavage was performed before air/NO2 exposure, before allergen challenge, and 1, 4 and 18 hours after allergen challenge. Symptoms were recorded.

In this study, twelve cases of CEP were followed for a mean period of 10.9 years (range 9.3-12.9 years) at National Himeji Hospital. Of the five women and seven men examined, two patients possessed preexisting asthma and one developed asthma during the course of CEP disease. The inhalation of wood dust may produce allergic rhinitis, asthma, or contact dermatitis in sensitized patients. We describe a patient with occupational asthma induced by the inhalation of samba (Triplochiton scleroxylon) wood dust. A specific bronchial provocation test was conducted, and the patient showed a significant decrease in forced-expiratory volume in first second (FEV1) after the inhalation of nebulized samba wood allergens. We have developed a reproducible allergic rhinitis model showing biphasic nasal blockage on repetitive inhalation challenge with Japanese cedar pollen in sensitised guinea pigs. To demonstrate the typical clinical and CT features of sinonasal polyposis, we reviewed the clinical records and preoperative direct coronal CT scans of 35 patients with surgically proven disease.
