Pseudo-subarachnoid hemorrhage and cortical visual impairment as the presenting sign of gliomatosis cerebri.

A 49-year-old white male presented with a pseudo-subarachnoid hemorrhage and diffuse brain edema. Neuroimaging showed brain edema causing the unusual findings of a pseudo-subarachnoid hemorrhage and bilateral occipital lobe infarcts following herniation and compression of the posterior cerebral arteries. An enlarged corpus callosum was noted which led to a brain biopsy and a diagnosis of gliomatosis cerebri.

[The anti-edematous effect of the preparation polyosm in acute hypertensive encephalopathy].

Experiments were conducted on Wistar rats to study the effect of intravenous infusion of polyosm (solution of polyethyleneoxide 400) on the parameters of brain tissue edema-swelling (according to impedancemetry findings) and the local cerebral blood flow on a model of acute hypertensive encephalopathy. Under such conditions the drug hastened involution of edema-swelling of the brain tissue and prevented a decrease in cerebral blood flow.

Massive subgaleal hematoma resulting in skin compromise and airway obstruction.

Subgaleal hematomas following minimal trauma, haircombing, and hair pulling by playground swings have been described. Recently a case was reported that progressed to otic hemorrhage and upper facial edema. We present a case (of a previously unreported nature) of a subgaleal hematoma that resulted in airway obstruction, massive edema of the entire face and neck, and limited epidermolysis of facial skin.

Multifocal eosinophilic granuloma. Response of a patient to etoposide.

A 60-year-old man with a history of diabetes insipidus presented with a left groin mass, leg edema, and retroperitoneal adenopathy. Biopsy results of the involved lymph nodes were typical of eosinophilic granuloma. The patient was treated with etoposide and prednisone and had a complete regression of his lymphadenopathy and edema. This response suggests that etoposide may be a useful agent in the management of histiocytosis X.

Asymmetric reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome.

Reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS) is characterized radiographically by magnetic resonance imaging as white matter hyperintensities, which reflect cerebral edema. These changes are typically restricted to the parietal and occipital lobes, and are usually quite symmetric. We report a case of asymmetric RPLS involving only one frontal lobe in a patient with severe hypertension, chronic internal carotid artery stenosis, and ipsilateral vasogenic edema.

[Transfusion-associated acute pulmonary insufficiency: a rare, but life-threatening transfusion reaction].

Two patients developed within several hours after blood transfusion severe shortness of breath which required temporary artificial ventilation. X-ray pictures of the chest showed pulmonary edema in both patients. No cardiac causes for edema were found. Detection of granulocyte antibodies in the sera of one patient and one blood donor confirmed the suspected diagnosis of transfusion-related acute lung injury.

Pathological evidence of vacuolar myelinopathy in a child following vigabatrin administration.

Vigabatrin, a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) aminotransferase- inhibiting drug used for seizure control, has been associated with white matter vacuolation and intramyelinic edema in animal studies. Similar pathological lesions have never been described in the central nervous system of human participants treated with the drug. Described here is a child with quadriparetic cerebral palsy secondary to hypoxic-ischemic brain injury following premature birth, who received vigabatrin for the treatment of infantile spasms at 9 months of age. A severe deterioration of neurologic function immediately fo

Miliary tuberculosis in a patient with eosinophilic fasciitis.

The fibrosing disorders represent a diverse group of uncommon chronic diseases that include systemic sclerosis, eosinophilic fasciitis, eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome, toxic oil syndrome, and localized forms of fibrosis. A rare case of eosinophilic fasciitis is reported. The patient was a 61-year-old female who presented with generalized massive edema and eosinophilia. Signs of common edema-producing diseases, such as heart failure, were absent. Corticosteroids were initiated with slow improvement in edema. Over the ensuing months, miliary tuberculosis and tenosynovitis of her left hand and lef

Body fluid overload and bioelectrical impedance analysis in renal patients.

Using a new bivariate vectorial approach to the standard bioimpedance analysis (tetrapolar, 50-kHz frequency), we evaluated the performance of a graphical method for the identification of patients with fluid overload. Two hundred and seventeen adult Caucasian subjects were divided into four classification groups: 86 healthy control subjects, 55 patients with mild-to-terminal chronic renal failure in conservative treatment (15% with apparent edema), 36 patients with idiopathic nephrotic proteinuria (58% with apparent edema), and 40 obese subjects. We found a bioimpedance threshold for apparent

Transient ureteral obstruction after ureteral stenting.

Transient distal ureteral edema and obstruction have been recognized complications of retrograde ureteral catheterization for years. Similar changes in the proximal ureter may be induced by antegrade (percutaneous) ureteral intubation and are being more widely recognized as radiologists become more involved in upper urinary tract percutaneous manipulative procedures. Marked mucosal edema of the ureter was observed in four patients who had percutaneously placed, in-dwelling stent catheters. This was severe enough to produce transient ureteral obstruction after stent removal in two. Some degree

Early Single-Examination Optical Coherence Tomography Biomarkers for Treatment-Requiring Retinopathy of Prematurity.

PURPOSE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an emerging adjunct imaging modality to evaluate retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). From an 11-year research database, we identify early OCT biomarkers that predict treatment-requiring ROP (TR-ROP). METHODS: For preterm infants with acceptable OCT images at 32 ± 1 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA), we extracted the following measures: total retina, inner retinal layer (IRL), and outer retinal layer (ORL) thicknesses at the fovea and the parafovea, inner nuclear layer (INL) and choroidal thickness, parafovea/fovea (P/F) ratio, and presence of macular e

Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy Induced Retinal Folds and Deformations.

PURPOSE: We hypothesized that the edema/swelling in the retina due to acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) can induce retinal folds (RF). We determined the pattern and frequency of folds in NAION at presentation and in follow-up, and the relationship between folds and a number of functional and structural parameters over time. METHODS: We prospectively studied eyes with acute NAION by spectral-domain optic coherence tomography (SD-OCT). We used transaxial and en face views to evaluate the presence of peripapillary fluid (PPF), peripapillary wrinkles (PPW), RF, choroid
