Unilateral vocal cord paralysis as a result of a Nocardia farcinica laryngeal abscess.

Nocardia farcinica is an emerging pathogen in immunocompromised hosts, accounting for 20% of Nocardia isolates in the USA and 13-44% of isolates in Europe. The case of a 72-year-old lymphoma patient with a laryngeal abscess caused by Nocardia farcinica is presented. The initial clinical manifestation was unilateral vocal cord paralysis, which improved following surgical drainage of the abscess and therapy with imipenem. The English-language literature on human Nocardia farcinica infection is reviewed.

[Chronic abdominal pain and eosinophilia in a patient from Southern Italy].

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic disease which occurs not only in tropical regions, but to some extent in the South of Europe. Diagnosis is often difficult because of a polymorphic clinical picture and low larvae excretion in the stool. A case of an Italian patient suffering from a long-standing intestinal strongyloidiasis is reported. Diagnosis was made only after a long time and after a couple of superfluous examinations. Several treatment attempts were necessary to eradicate the infection.

Retinoids: a review.

The retinoids are synthetic derivatives of vitamin A. Isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) is now being widely used in the United States for severe acne and etretinate is available in Europe and other countries for psoriasis. These drugs are also effective for a number of other skin diseases. This is an attempt to review basic knowledge of retinoids with which the practicing dermatologist should be familiar, to review the current status of studies, and to speculate on the present and future roles of these drugs in dermatology.

Neurocysticercosis: an exotic disease presenting in Australian immigrants.

Two cases of neurocysticercosis which occurred in migrant women are reported. This disease, produced from the larval form of the pig tapeworm, Taenia solium, is not endemic in Australia. It is prevalent in Latin America, India, parts of Africa and eastern Europe and some Mediterranean areas. Where the possibility of exposure to this parasite exists, neurocysticercosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of late-onset epilepsy, hydrocephalus, focal fits, progressive dementia, and in spinal cord tumours.

[A serological survey of rubella among pregnant women in Abidjan (author's transl)].

A serological survey about the prevalence of the rubella hemagglutination inhibiting antibodies among the pregnant women in Abidjan during the year 1975 has shown an average rate of seroconversion of 84 p. 100. This rate depends on age and increases from 70 to 80 p. 100 between 15 and 35 years old. A regression line is fitted, and the goodness of fit is tested. These rates are in accordance with what is presently observed in America, in Europe and in Australia.

The Effect of Biogeographic Origin on the Adaptive Trajectories of Plants in Urban Environments.

Parallel adaptation is a hallmark of urban evolution, yet whether plant responses to urbanization are globally consistent or influenced by biogeographic origin remains unclear. We investigated pollinator communities, floral display and reproductive allocation in Trifolium repens along urbanization gradients in 11 European urban areas spanning boreal, continental, and Mediterranean biogeographic regions. We found strong differences, with boreal and continental gradients showing no consistent floral trait shifts, whereas Mediterranean gradients showed parallel reductions in flower and infloresce

Translocation effects on regional and local population viability and connectivity.

Translocations and reintroductions aim to improve the viability of isolated populations and promote connectivity for large carnivores. However, there is no established framework for assessing their success. We used the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in western and central Europe to assess the impact of translocations on the viability of six populations and their interconnectivity. Lynx populations are small and isolated and have low genetic diversity. Population reinforcements have been carried out, but their impact has not been determined. We devised a workflow to evaluate how releasing new indivi

On the Label: Implementation of Health Warnings on Alcohol Products in 13 European Countries.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol health warning labels are an important part of a comprehensive alcohol policy, but there is a lack of recent implementation data across Europe. This study examined the presence, content and format of health warnings across 13 European countries. METHODS: Store audits were conducted across 32 stores in 23 cities. The sampled products were assessed for the presence, topic and format of health warnings. RESULTS: Among the 1636 investigated products, 69.7% displayed health warnings. The most common topics were pregnancy (68.0%), drink-driving (21.4%) and age restrictions (1

Consensus Statement on Digital Health and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder by the European Network for ADHD (EUNETHYDIS): Modified Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital technologies are becoming an important part of health care, including for individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Digital health innovations present valuable opportunities to provide flexible and tailored support for their diverse needs, along with significant challenges. Attentional, organizational, and motivational characteristics associated with ADHD may affect how individuals engage with digital tools. Potential risks include additional access barriers, the exclusion of underserved groups, and diminished quality of care. To help reduce these ri

Pan-continental assessment of socioeconomic and environmental predictors of PFAS occurrence in European rivers from a harmonised monitoring study.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent contaminants that are widely detected in surface waters and are of growing global concern. However, the factors associated with variations in PFAS contamination across space and time at a continental scale remain poorly understood. Here, we combine results from a harmonised pan-European river monitoring study with partial least squares path modelling (PLS-PM) to identify the key factors associated with PFAS contamination in European rivers. Seven high-priority PFAS were monitored at 280 sites across 93 rivers in 31 European countries, r

Procedures of data merging in precision cancer medicine: the PRIME-ROSE project.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: As more interventional clinical trials in Precision Cancer Medicine (PCM) are introduced, molecular descriptions of tumours have led to multiple subtypes, even within common tumour types. Therefore, the main limitation of these trials is the small number of eligible patients to assess the clinical benefit. The PRIME-ROSE project addresses this limitation by pooling data from multiple European Drug Rediscovery Protocol (DRUP)-like clinical trials, such that slowly accruing cohorts are accelerated. To achieve this task, a well-documented commonly approved procedure for da

Global analysis of infant gut microbiota revealed distinctive maturation dynamics across lifestyles.

The infant gut microbiome develops during the first years of life and influences long-term health through its interaction with immune system development. However, our understanding of early-life microbiome assembly is biased by the predominance of infants with industrialized lifestyles from North America and Europe. Here, we address this bias by assembling a globally representative dataset of 14,979 infant gut microbiomes from 2746 individuals to train a microbiome maturation model that can characterize lifestyle-specific patterns of microbial maturation as a function of age. Models trained ex

Model informed assessment of QT prolongation during drug development: a five-year retrospective analysis of EMA scientific advices.

Regulatory evaluation of QT interval prolongation remains central to cardiac safety assessment in drug development. Since the 2015 revision of the ICH E14 Q&A, concentration-QT (C-QT) modelling has been formally recognized as an acceptable alternative to dedicated Thorough QT (TQT) studies, offering ethical and practical advantages. This study aimed to characterize how the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has assessed C-QT modelling approaches over the past five years, with particular focus on regulatory acceptance of TQT waiver requests and the recurring drivers of rejection. A retrospective r

Sirenomelia: A Review of European Prevalence Data and Epidemiological Analysis of 17 Cases Registered in Wales.

BACKGROUND: Sirenomelia is a rare congenital condition most notably characterized by a single lower limb. Previous studies have suggested a prevalence of approximately 1 per 100,000 births. However, in Wales 17 cases were recorded between 1998 and 2016, suggesting a higher rate of sirenomelia in this country. OBJECTIVES: This study compared current prevalence of sirenomelia in Wales with European data. This study further reviewed detailed time, place, and person data on sirenomelia cases in Wales to investigate possible causal factors. METHOD: A retrospective cohort study from birth defect s

Masters Athletes With Abnormal Cardiovascular Findings: A Clinical Consensus Statement of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology of the ESC and the American College of Cardiology.

Exercise training improves cardiovascular health and reduces the risk for future cardiovascular events and mortality. However, emerging evidence suggests that Masters athletes may have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular abnormalities, such as atrial arrhythmias, coronary atherosclerosis, aortic dilatation, and myocardial fibrosis, compared to their less active peers. The clinical management of Masters athletes may be challenging as available guidelines for such conditions are generally based on data derived from symptomatic sedentary patients, limiting their applicability to highly trained

European expert recommendations for comprehensive pre-treatment, treatment-phase and post-treatment care of patients with metachromatic leukodystrophy treated with autologous haematopoietic stem and progenitor cell gene therapy.

BACKGROUND: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by arylsulfatase A deficiency, leading to accumulation of sulfatides and widespread demyelination. Autologous haematopoietic stem and progenitor cell gene therapy (HSPC-GT; atidarsagene autotemcel, arsa-cel) has emerged as an effective treatment for early-onset MLD when administered before or at very early stages of neurological involvement. However, standardized recommendations for pre-treatment evaluation, treatment phase care, and long-term follow-up are lacking. METHODS: Under the auspi
