[Development of Practice Guidelines for Social Work in Medical Rehabilitation].

PURPOSE: Social work services are a major part of the treatment spectrum in medical rehabilitation. Given new demands and differences in the practical implementation of social work interventions, there is a need for good clinical practice standards of care. Therefore, practice guidelines (PG) for social work in medical rehabilitation facilities were developed. These are intended to support decision-making processes in interventions and give other professions working in rehabilitative care insight into the range of social work services. The PG were developed in a multi-stage process involving e

[Anesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy].

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an important component in the treatment of depression and schizophrenia in Germany. For this intervention patients undergo short-term general anesthesia and muscle relaxation. Before anesthesia can be carried out patients are subject to a comprehensive examination. For general anesthesia all established hypnotics can be used, but differences with respect to the success of the ECT have been described. Short-acting or reversible relaxants should be preferentially used. The risks of general anesthesia during ECT are estimated to be low but a transient hemodynami

[Hip Fractures in Adults - Contemporary Clinical Management Based on International Standards].

BACKGROUND: Patients with hip fractures, often of advanced age and with multimorbidity-trauma, require early surgery and interdisciplinary treatment in order to avoid complications and reduce morbidity and mortality. "Time to surgery" is a sensitive quality indicator (QI) for the treatment process, reflecting multiple factors. Due to persistently noticeable problems in relation to this QI in external inpatient quality assurance in Germany, a special need for action was identified by the Federal Joint Committee (Gemeinsamer Bundesausschuss - G-BA). OBJECTIVES: Identification of methodologicall

[Is the role of mental illness in suicide overestimated?].

In the scientific literature, it is often said that 90% of all suicides are the consequences of a mental illness. Nevertheless, recent reports and comments cast doubt on this view and point out that such a limitation might hamper effective suicide prevention. In this overview we will outline and discuss important results on how often suicides are the consequence of mental illnesses and whether the association between mental illnesses and suicide might be overestimated.Mental illnesses and especially affective disorders increase the risk of suicide by 30 to 50 times. Nevertheless, they explain

Visualisation and bibliometric analysis of worldwide research trend of stress among seafarer: an extensive publication analysis.

Stress is the most predominant and worldwide psychological human condition that undoubtedly impedes the state of mind of the individuals. During the last few years, a tremendous change and growth in the global publishing trend for human stress have been observed. Like other professionals (doctors, bankers, teachers, and businessmen), the mariners or seafarers are also being the most common victims of this human psychological disorder (stress) these days. The keywords "seafarer" and "stress" have been exposed to mine the research trend of the articles exploring the stress among the seafarers. F

[Primary aldosteronism - why is it still underdiagnosed in clinical practice?].

Primary aldosteronism (PA) represents the leading cause of endocrine hypertension, accounting for 4-13 % of all cases. Simultaneously, it is the most common endocrine form of hypertension that can be cured by surgery. Estimates suggest that 2.5 million people in Germany are affected, yet only 8 % of hypertensive patients undergo the proper diagnostic screening for PA. The diagnosis of PA is evidently not taken into account sufficiently when it comes to the everyday management of hypertension. Since PA patients carry an increased risk of cardio- and cerebrovascular events as well as metabolic c

FAIR-compliant clinical, radiomics and DICOM metadata of RIDER, interobserver, Lung1 and head-Neck1 TCIA collections.

PURPOSE: One of the most frequently cited radiomics investigations showed that features automatically extracted from routine clinical images could be used in prognostic modeling. These images have been made publicly accessible via The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA). There have been numerous requests for additional explanatory metadata on the following datasets - RIDER, Interobserver, Lung1, and Head-Neck1. To support repeatability, reproducibility, generalizability, and transparency in radiomics research, we publish the subjects' clinical data, extracted radiomics features, and digital imaging

A Piranha-like Pycnodontiform Fish from the Late Jurassic.

Pycnodontiformes are an extinct order of ray-finned fishes from the Triassic to Eocene [1, 2], with a characteristic crushing dentition reflecting a highly specialized diet [3]. However, our discovery of a new pycnodontiform from the Late Jurassic (ca. 152 Ma) Plattenkalk deposits of the Solnhofen Archipelago revealed long, pointed teeth along the vomer and triangular teeth with cutting edges along the prearticulars. This is the earliest evidence of specialized flesh cutting in a ray-finned fish. The dentition pattern, tooth shape, jaw morphology, and mechanics are all indicative of a feeding

[Delegation of medical activities in acute pain therapy].

Acute pain management is an interprofessional and interdisciplinary task and requires a good and trustful cooperation between stakeholders. Despite provisions in Germany according to which medical treatment can only be rendered by a formally qualified physician ("Arztvorbehalt"), a physician does not have to carry out every medical activity in person. Under certain conditions, some medical activities can be delegated to medical auxiliary personnel but they need to be (1) instructed, (2) supervised and (3) checked by the physician himself; however, medical history, diagnostic assessment and eva

Update on therapy and prevention of canine leishmaniasis.

Canine leishmaniasis is an emerging infection with increasing importance because the main vector also exists in Germany and autochthonous infections have been described. In this article we present the latest information available regarding therapy and prevention of this disease. Allopurinol-resistant Leishmania infantum strains were isolated from dogs which experienced recurrent disease while being treated with allopurinol, highlighting the need for alternative treatment options. Differing results of long-term studies on the efficacy of miltefosine in combination with allopurinol in comparison
