Evaluating the effectiveness of educational initiatives on recruiting underrepresented participants into SLE clinical trials.

BackgroundHealthcare disparities in SLE randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are well known, with minoritized persons being under-represented as trial participants despite facing more significant SLE morbidity and mortality. There is currently limited information as to how to best recruit a diverse group of participants to SLE clinical trials. Barriers to clinical trial participation can originate from either the patients or their clinicians. We therefore sought to investigate the effectiveness of educational curriculum in decreasing such barriers.MethodsWe utilized materials from the American Co

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding urinary tract infections among women in the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are infections of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra, are a worldwide public health concern. As compared to men, women are more prone to UTIs. There have been several studies that explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of women regarding UTIs in different countries, but no such study has been conducted in the UAE; therefore, we conducted this study in the UAE setting. METHODS: This study was conducted using an online survey created on Microsoft Forms. The minimum sample size required for our study was 385. This study was condu

Exploring perceptions on vulnerabilities and resilience to scabies among street children: a qualitative study in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) and a significant public health concern in resource-limited settings. While the prevalence and burden of scabies in Ethiopia have been well documented among the general population, little attention has been given to the perspectives of street children on their vulnerability to this condition. This study aims to explore street children's views on their perceived susceptibility to scabies, the role of gender in this vulnerability, and their resilience strategies. METHODS: A qualitative ethnographic study was conducted from March to May 2

Mapping the Cognitive Architecture of Health Beliefs: A Multivariate Conditional Network of Perceived Salt-Related Disease Risks.

Background: Public beliefs about dietary risks, such as excessive salt intake, are often not isolated misconceptions but part of structured cognitive systems. This study aimed to explore how individuals organize their beliefs and misperceptions regarding salt-related health consequences. Material and Methods: Using data from an international online survey, we applied a system of multivariate proportional odds logistic regression (POLR) models to estimate conditional associations among beliefs about salt's links to various diseases-including cardiovascular, metabolic, renal, neuropsychiatric, a

New-onset IgE mediated reactions in eosinophilic esophagitis associated elimination diets (NIMREEDs).

BACKGROUND: Empiric elimination diets remain a cornerstone of treatment for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Immunoglobulin E (IgE) mediated allergic reactions have been sparsely reported during the food reintroduction phase, raising concerns both for patients and physicians. We aimed to assess the physician reported rates of new-onset IgE mediated reactions in EoE associated elimination diets (NIMREEDs), physician awareness of NIMREEDs, and how awareness impacts physician and patient treatment selection. METHODS: An international REDCap based questionnaire was distributed via interest groups,

Understanding perceptions of malaria control measures in Burundi: a qualitative descriptive study using a socio-ecological approach.

BACKGROUND: In Burundi, malaria remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality and persists as a major public health problem despite control strategies implemented nationally since 2000. While some quantitative studies have evaluated specific interventions, qualitative research examining the perceptions and practices of target populations regarding prevention measures is lacking. Such research is particularly important in the current context, where multiple control strategies are simultaneously implemented, potentially leading to confusion or reluctance among the population to adhere to

Knowledge, perceptions, and predictors of zoonotic disease risk among residents of a national park community.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine how residents living in Mole National Park, Ghana, understand and perceive zoonotic diseases. By assessing their knowledge sources, perceived transmission pathways, and views on animal reservoirs, the research sought to identify key predictors shaping residents' perception of zoonotic risk and to inform targeted health and conservation interventions. RESULTS: Awareness of zoonotic diseases was widespread, yet only 37% of respondents rated their knowledge as "very good." Self-learning (89%) was the dominant information source, far outweighing formal train

Lyme borreliosis awareness and risk perception: a survey in 20 European countries.

An estimated 129000 cases of Lyme borreliosis (LB) are reported annually in Europe. In 2022, we conducted a representative web-based survey of 28034 persons aged 18-65 years old in 20 European countries to describe tick and LB risk exposures and perceptions. Nearly all respondents (95.0%) were aware of ticks (range, 90.4% in the UK to 98.8% in Estonia). Among those aware of ticks, most (85.1%) were also aware of LB (range, 70.3% in Switzerland to 97.0% in Lithuania). Overall, 8.3% of respondents reported a past LB diagnosis (range, 3.0% in Romania to 13.8% in Sweden). Respondents spent a weekl

Factors associated with Myanmar women's attitudes toward negotiating safer sexual relations.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, HIV and STIs remain major public health challenges, with women disproportionately affected. Myanmar is among the 35 countries contributing to 90% of new HIV infections worldwide. Addressing these challenges requires strengthening women's ability and fostering positive attitudes toward negotiating safer sexual relations (SSR), as these factors directly influence their behaviors and capacity to protect their sexual health. This study aimed to identify factors associated with Myanmar women's attitudes toward negotiating SSR, and examine changes in associations when additio

The influence of patients' beliefs about medicines and the relationship with suboptimal medicine use in community-dwelling older adults: a systematic review of quantitative studies.

BACKGROUND: Medication use in older adults is increasing, therefore, reducing the risk of suboptimal medicine use is imperative in achieving optimal therapeutic outcomes. Research suggests that factors such as personal beliefs and beliefs about medicines may be associated with non-adherence and inappropriate medicine use. AIM: To systematically review and identify quantitative research on the influence of beliefs about medicines and the relationship with suboptimal medicine use in older adults. METHOD: Searches were conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO for quantitative studies (

What do cervical cancer patients know, how do they learn, and who do they tell? A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: This study explored what patients identified with cervical cancer know about the link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer and where they learned this information. Patients share a great deal of information with family, friends and colleagues and we were interested in the accuracy and sources of information they are sharing. METHODS: Patients identified through the EHR of a health system who had a history of cervical cancer were invited to participate in a brief survey of their experience. The sample represents an opportunity sample of patients who responded. RE
