Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) intake has been reported to reduce body fat mass or increase lean body mass and to improve exercise outcome by modulating testosterone in humans. These reports have studied mostly overweight subjects; few were athletes. Therefore, in this study, the effect of CLA intake on endurance performance and anti-fatigue in student athletes was investigated. A double-blind, crossover study was conducted with 10 male student athletes. Each subject was administered with either CLA (net 0.9 g/day) or a placebo for 14 days. They were subjected to an exercise tolerance test (s

Maintenance of whole-body glucose homeostasis is critical to glycemic function. Genetic variants mapping to chromosome 8p23.1 in genome-wide association studies have been linked to glycemic traits in humans. The gene of known function closest to the mapped region, PPP1R3B (protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 3B), encodes a protein (GL) that regulates glycogen metabolism in the liver. We therefore sought to test the hypothesis that hepatic PPP1R3B is associated with glycemic traits. We generated mice with either liver-specific deletion (Ppp1r3bΔhep ) or liver-specific overexpression of Ppp

Trypanosoma brucei belongs to a group of unicellular, flagellated parasites that are responsible for human African trypanosomiasis. An essential aspect of parasite pathogenicity is cytoskeleton remodelling, which occurs during the life cycle of the parasite and is accompanied by major changes in morphology and organelle positioning. The flagellum originates from the basal bodies and exits the cell body through the flagellar pocket (FP) but remains attached to the cell body via the flagellum attachment zone (FAZ). The FP is an invagination of the pellicular membrane and is the sole site for end

Oncologic patients subjected to chemotherapy frequently present aphagia, malnutrition, and cachexia. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether selected growth hormone secretagogues including hexarelin, JMV2894 and JMV2951 could antagonize body weight loss and wasting induced by cisplatin administration in rats. The three growth hormone secretagogues behaved as full agonists of the growth hormone secretagogues receptor both in terms of ability to stimulate calcium mobilization in Chinese hamster ovary cells and stimulation of growth hormone release in neonatal rats. Adult rats were (

Currently, the pathophysiology of idiopathic Parkinson's disease is explained by a loss of mainly dopaminergic nerve cells that causes a neurotransmitter deficiency. In the final stage of the disease, there is a marked loss of neurons in the substantia nigra. In addition, Lewy bodies can be found in some of the remaining neurons, which serve as the pathological hallmark of the disease. These Lewy bodies are composed mainly of aggregated α-synuclein, a physiological presynaptic protein. Lewy bodies were thought to be the pathophysiologically relevant form of α-synuclein because their appearance

Previous studies have shown that hyperoxia-induced deactivation of carotid body chemoreceptors reduces sympathetic activity in hypertensive patients but it does not affect blood pressure. The maintenance of blood pressure can be explained by the direct, vasoconstrictive effect of hyperoxia, which offsets diminished sympathetic activity. This study compares the effect of acute hyperoxia on hemodynamic parameters between hypertensive and normotensive subjects. Twelve males with hypertension (age 39.4±2.4 years; body mass index 27.4±1.1 kg m(-2)) and 11 normotensive males (age 39.9±2.7 years; bod

OBJECTIVE: Recent study showed high chemokine CXC ligand 5 (CXCL5) is thought to be associated with insulin resistance in humans. However, evidence from large-scale populations about the relationship between serum CXCL5 level and metabolic phenotypes is scarce. Here we sought to evaluate serum CXCL5 distribution and its association with metabolic phenotypes among middle-aged and older Chinese.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We evaluated serum CXCL5 in a cross-sectional sample of 3225 Chinese aged from 50 to 88 yr in a Shanghai downtown district by ELISA. Glucose, insulin, lipid profile, inflamm

Interaction between central (brainstem) and peripheral (carotid body) respiratory chemosensitivity is vital to protect blood gases against potentially deleterious fluctuations, especially during sleep. Previously, using an in situ arterially perfused, vagotomized, decerebrate preparation in which brainstem and peripheral chemoreceptors are perfused separately (i.e. dual perfused preparation; DPP), we observed that the phrenic response to specific carotid body hypoxia was larger when the brainstem was held at 25 Torr P(CO(2)) compared to 50 Torr P(CO(2)). This suggests a negative (i.e. hypo-add

BACKGROUND: Studying magnesium pools in the body with use of stable isotopes may be helpful for evaluating magnesium status. Data on the evaluation of magnesium pools in humans are scarce.
OBJECTIVE: We undertook this study to evaluate the effects of a magnesium supplementation program on the size of the exchangeable body pools of magnesium and on classic indexes of magnesium status in healthy women with normal magnesium status.
DESIGN: Ten healthy women participated in a kinetic study with magnesium stable isotopes before and after 8 wk of magnesium supplementation. Each woman received 3 su

The tegumental surface of the newly excysted juvenile, first-week and adult stages of a human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The surface of the newly excysted juvenile is characterized by circumferentially arranged ridges alternated with troughs which bear rows of spines encircling the body. These spines are characterized by the shapes of their edges: the first type with serrated edge appears on the anterior part, and the second type with single sharp edge appears on the middle part. There are no spines on the posterior part of the body. Three

The clinical manifestations of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) result from Rickettsia rickettsii (R rickettsii) infection of endothelial cells and are mediated by pathologic changes localized to the vessel, including in situ thrombosis and tissue ischemia. This study uses in vitro infection of cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells with R rickettsii to test the hypothesis that such infection induces von Willebrand factor (vWF) release from Weibel-Palade bodies, a process that could contribute to thrombotic changes. At 24 hours postinfection, there was an increase in metabolically

INTRODUCTION: The CEL gene encodes the pancreatic enzyme carboxyl ester lipase. The human CEL-HYB1 allele, a hybrid variant of CEL and its adjacent pseudogene CELP, is associated with a five-fold increased risk for chronic pancreatitis in European cohorts. Humanized Cel-HYB1 mice develop chronic pancreatitis spontaneously albeit with a relatively mild presentation. The aim of this study was to further characterize the pancreatic phenotype in Cel-HYB1 mice.
METHODS: We investigated Cel-HYB1 animals by two complementary approaches. First, we analyzed compound heterozygous Cel-16R/HYB1 mice wher

The Nipah virus was discovered twenty years ago, and there is considerable information available regarding the specificities surrounding this virus such as transmission, pathogenesis and genome. Belonging to the Henipavirus genus, this virus can cause fever, encephalitis and respiratory disorders. The first cases were reported in Malaysia and Singapore in 1998, when affected individuals presented with severe febrile encephalitis. Since then, much has been identified about this virus. These single-stranded RNA viruses gain entry into target cells via a process known as macropinocytosis. The vir

The skin is the body's primary biological barrier, largely due to the highly organized structure of the stratum corneum (SC). Although essential for protection, this barrier function limits the efficacy of transdermal drug delivery, as most topically applied compounds fail to reach deeper skin layers at therapeutically relevant concentrations. Existing approaches often rely on physical disruption of the barrier, which can cause undesirable side effects. Moreover, many prior studies have been conducted in murine models, which do not accurately recapitulate human skin physiology, hindering the t

Unlike other catarrhine primates, modern humans deliver a helpless newborn who requires prolonged extensive care. Such helpless infancy is associated with fetus-like, rapid postnatal brain growth, which is essential to produce the large human brain. In the debate about its evolution, a key question has been whether it emerged in Homo erectus, whose brain sizes were approximately 20-40% smaller than Homo sapiens. We here show that a type of asymmetric cranial deformity called deformational plagiocephaly can serve as a direct indicator of helpless infancy, regardless of the developmental age of

Within the ultraviolet C (UVC) spectrum, the wavelengths in the 200-235 nm range, here named far-UVC, have been shown to effectively inactivate a variety of pathogens. Because of their limited penetration in biological materials, far-UVC wavelengths are anticipated to be minimally damaging to human skin and eyes. The germicidal efficacy of these wavelengths combined with a predicted low health hazard for humans suggests that far-UVC sources could operate continuously in indoor locations to reduce the risk of transmission of airborne diseases among occupants. While it is well-established that e

Background/Objectives: The molecular cascades involved in the induction and maintenance of neuroinflammation resulting from chronic compression of the cervical spinal cord in the setting of degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) have yet to be defined. Here, we determined the role of the fractalkine receptor, CX3CR1, during the neuroinflammatory response in a novel mouse model of DCM and demonstrated the relevance of this mechanism with human DCM tissue. Methods: Using our murine DCM model alongside the CX3CR1-knockout mice and a neutralizing antibody of CX3CR1 in wild-type mice, we examined p

At present, it is well known that oral health is essential for the well-being of the body as a whole, thanks to the increasing awareness of how various oral diseases, including periodontal disease, oral carcinomas, and other conditions, have a close connection with various systemic disorders. In recent decades, studies on the oral microbiome have increasingly emphasized how the balance between the host and the microbial species that coexist there is essential for oral health at all stages of life. However, there are many factors capable of interfering with that balance, and diet is precisely o

One of the major histopathological features of Parkinsons's disease - intracellular Lewy bodies - consists of misfolded α-synuclein. This protein can self-assemble, spread through the brain and seed its own aggregation. Aggregated α-synuclein is shown to induce mitochondrial dysfunction that leads to neuronal loss. Using human iPSC-derived SNCA triplication (3xSNCA) and isogenic control (ISO) neurons we studied whether acute exposure to fibrillar α-synuclein, or its seeding properties, induce effects on mitochondrial function and toxicity. Chronic exposure of neurons to fibrillar α-synuclein (

Memory is a reconstructive and continuous process that enables existing information to be modified in response to a changing environment. Being able to dynamically update outdated memories is critical to an organism's survival. Memory modifications have been extensively studied in both rodents and humans, and prior work has revealed many regional, cellular, neurotransmitter, and subcellular molecular mechanisms underlying this process. However, these diverse bodies of literature have not yet been fully integrated into a comprehensive cross-species review. Integrating the finding across rodent
