Integrated multi-omics analysis reveals immunovascular mechanisms of the placenta-maternal brain axis and lifespan neurobehavior changes in a mouse model of preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, among the leading global drivers of maternal morbidity. PE can precipitate neuropsychiatric risk, including for peripartum anxiety, depression, and cognitive problems. To investigate mechanisms underlying psycho-obstetric risk in PE, we examined maternal metabolic, placental, brain, and behavioral changes in our chronic vasopressin (AVP) infusion PE mouse model (C57Bl6/J). Elevated maternal AVP secretion predicts PE in humans, and chronic AVP administration is sufficient to phenocopy immune, obstetric, and renal phenotypes of PE in pre

Association Between Neonatal and Maternal Vitamin D Levels at Birth.

Background Vitamin D is an important nutrient for skeletal and extra-skeletal health. Mothers and their neonates are frequently vitamin D deficient. This study aimed to find the association of neonatal vitamin D levels with maternal vitamin D levels at birth. Materials and methods This descriptive-observational study was done on mother-baby dyads at a tertiary center, which included mothers delivering a healthy baby at term gestation. In this study, we reviewed 102 mother-baby dyads. The maternal venous blood and cord blood samples were collected after delivery to determine vitamin D levels. D

Maternal Recall of Obstetric Office-Based Activities That Promote Antepartum Tetanus-Diphtheria-Acellular-Pertussis Vaccination.

Objective: To explore associations between maternal characteristics and recall of obstetric provider actions in promoting antepartum tetanus-diphtheria-acellular-pertussis (Tdap) vaccination. Methods: A convenience sample of 1,682 postpartum women was surveyed in this cross-sectional study. Maternal characteristics and recall of four obstetric provider actions (recommending antepartum Tdap vaccine, offering it in clinic, providing written information, and referring patients elsewhere for vaccination) were collected. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to ch

Pregnancy, infection, and epigenetic regulation: A complex scenario.

A unique immunological condition, pregnancy ensures fetus from maternal rejection, allows adequate fetal development, and protects against microorganisms. Infections during pregnancy may lead to devastating consequences for pregnant women and fetuses, resulting in the mother's death, miscarriage, premature childbirth, or neonate with congenital infection and severe diseases and defects. Epigenetic (heritable changes in gene expression) mechanisms like DNA methylation, chromatin modification, and gene expression modulation during gestation are linked with the number of defects in the fetus and

Advanced Maternal Age Worsens Postpartum Vascular Function.

The age at which women experience their first pregnancy has increased throughout the decades. Pregnancy has an important influence on maternal short- and long-term cardiovascular outcomes. Pregnancy at an advanced maternal age increases maternal risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, placenta previa and caesarian delivery; complications which predict worsened cardiovascular health in later years. Aging also independently increases the risk of cardiovascular disease; therefore, combined risk in women of advanced maternal age may lead to detrimental cardiovascular outcomes later in life. We

Fish consumption during pregnancy, mercury transfer, and birth weight along the Madeira River Basin in Amazonia.

UNLABELLED: Birth weight can be a predictor of maternal health issues related to nutrition and environmental contaminants. Total hair mercury (HHg) concentration was studied as an indicator of both fish consumption and methylmercury exposure in mothers (and newborns) living in selected low income areas of the Madeira River basin, Amazonia, Brazil. This cohort study (n = 1,433) consisted of traditional riverines (n = 396), riverines who had moved to urban (n = 676) and rural (n = 67) settings, and tin miner settlers (n = 294). Median maternal HHg was significantly different (p = 0.00001) betwee

Effects of support from spouse on child birth among rural Indian women.

Inadequate husband involvement remains a major barrier to effective birth preparedness and complication readiness (BPCR) for maternal and newborn care in rural India. Hence, a cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2025 to December 2025 at the Rural Health and Training Centre, Manglia, including 283 pregnant woman-husband dyads. The BPCR index was 45.86, indicating suboptimal preparedness in the study population. Significant associations were observed between husband involvement and completion of 4 ANC visits (OR=1.7), knowledge of one key danger sign of pregnancy (OR=1.8) and awareness

Comparative analysis of placental transmission mechanisms for Dengue and Zika viruses: outcomes and future directions.

Zika and Dengue viruses are arboviral pathogens capable of crossing the placental barrier, representing major global health risks for maternal and fetal outcomes. In this narrative review, we compare their epidemiology, clinical consequences in pregnancy, and underlying mechanisms of vertical transmission. Emerging molecular insights are highlighted, including disruptions to placental signaling pathways such as JAK/STAT and mTOR, and strategies to evade Hofbauer cells and the immune system. A comparative analysis of these processes underscores a critical need for improved understanding of plac

A Review of the Long-Term Cardiovascular Consequences of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a major worldwide issue, affecting 5-10% of pregnancies and causing feto-maternal mortality and morbidity. It includes chronic, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and chronic hypertension with preeclampsia. The underlying pathophysiology includes aberrant placental perfusion, angiogenic imbalance, endothelial dysfunction, and hereditary susceptibility. Women with HDP face a markedly increased risk of cardiovascular disease, chronic renal disease, and metabolic syndrome, with larger connections than those with gestational diabetes. Measures suc

Trends and Characteristics in Maternal Syphilis Rates During Pregnancy: United States, 2016-2022.

After reaching historic lows in 2000 and 2001, rates of primary and secondary syphilis in the overall U.S. population have increased nearly every year through 2022 (1). For 2017-2022, rates of syphilis for women of reproductive age and congenital syphilis (a disease that occurs when a mother with syphilis passes the infection on to her baby during pregnancy) increased by more than 250% (1,2). Congenital syphilis can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes such as fetal and neonatal death, low birthweight, preterm birth, and brain and nerve disorders (2). This report presents trends in maternal syphil
