Oxygen isotope signature of UV degradation of glyphosate and phosphonoacetate: tracing sources and cycling of phosphonates.

The degradation of phosphonates in the natural environment constitutes a major route by which orthophosphate (Pi) is regenerated from organic phosphorus and recently implicated in marine methane production, with ramifications to environmental pollution issues and global climate change concerns. This work explores the application of stable oxygen isotope analysis in elucidating the CP bond cleavage mechanism(s) of phosphonates by UV photo-oxidation and for tracing their sources in the environment. The two model phosphonates used, glyphosate and phosphonoacetic acid were effectively degraded aft

P2X7 receptor activation regulates microglial cell death during oxygen-glucose deprivation.

Brain-resident microglia may promote tissue repair following stroke but, like other cells, they are vulnerable to ischemia. Here we identify mechanisms involved in microglial ischemic vulnerability. Using time-lapse imaging of cultured BV2 microglia, we show that simulated ischemia (oxygen-glucose deprivation; OGD) induces BV2 microglial cell death. Removal of extracellular Ca(2+) or application of Brilliant Blue G (BBG), a potent P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) antagonist, protected BV2 microglia from death. To validate and extend these in vitro findings, we assessed parenchymal microglia in freshly is

Oxygen free radical involvement in acute lung injury induced by H5N1 virus in mice.

BACKGROUND: Acute lung injury is an important cause of death in humans infected with H5N1. It has been found that oxygen free radicals (OFRs) are elevated in lung tissue during influenza virus infections. In this study, we used a mouse model to explore the role of OFRs in acute lung injury caused by H5N1 viral infection. METHODS: Four- to six-week-old male specific pathogen-free BALB/c mice were inoculated intranasally with 10(5) 50% tissue culture infective doses (TCID50) of highly pathogenic A/Chicken/Hebei/108/2002 (H5N1) viruses and were then given 1000 IU of lauric acid modified superoxi

Role of some organic inhibitors on the oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide by oxygen in rainwater medium.

In August 2012, eight rainwater samples were collected and analyzed for pH and metal ions, viz., iron, copper, and manganese. The pH was within the range 6.84-7.65. The rate of oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide was determined using these rainwater samples as reaction medium. Kinetics was defined by the rate law: -d[S(IV)]/dt = R o = k o[S(IV)]], where k o is the first-order rate constant and R o is the rate of the reaction. The effect of two volatile organic compounds-ethanol and 2-butanol-was examined and found to inhibit the oxidation as defined by the rate law: k obs = k o/(1 + B [Inh])

Dynamics of reactive oxygen species generation in the presence of copper(II)-histidine complex and cysteine.

Histidine-copper(II) complex (Cu-His2) is a form of bound copper necessary for cellular copper uptake. Due to the high affinity of histidine to copper(II) ions, the binding of copper(II) by histidine is considered a substantial part of plasma antioxidative defense. Also cysteine plays a role in the antioxidative system. However, we show here that in the presence of oxygen the histidine-copper(II) complex plus cysteine produces reactive oxygen species (ROS). Cysteine concentration was assayed using a thiol specific silver-mercury electrode. Hydrogen peroxide was assayed amperometrically using p

[Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support for tako-tsubo syndrome after urgent caesarean section].

Tako-tsubo syndrome is a rare cardiomyopathy secondary to catecholamine toxicity responsible of myocardial stunning. Severe complications such as cardiogenic shock or ventricular arrhythmia can occur. We presented the case of a 32-year-old woman victim of a tako-tsubo syndrome with severe cardiogenic shock during surgical procedure for urgent caesarean section. After refractory haemodynamic failure, the patient benefits from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support device with success.

[Diagnostic efficacy of biophysical tests and cerebral-umbilical index when assessing fetal oxygenation].

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal morbidity and mortality are the ultimate indicators of antenatal care today, whose responsible task is to assess the respiratory function of the placenta, fetal growth and placental maturation in order to provide conditions for the delivery of a living and viable newborn. The diagnostic procedures of antenatal care tested within this study were the biophysical tests of cardiotocography and the fetal biophysical profile, along with the colour doppler evaluation of the cerebral-umbilical ratio. The objective of this study was to determine the most effective diagnostic pro

Cerebral oxygen metabolism in neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy during and after therapeutic hypothermia.

Pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are associated with complex changes of blood flow and metabolism. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is effective in reducing the extent of brain injury, but it remains uncertain how TH affects cerebral blood flow (CBF) and metabolism. Ten neonates undergoing TH for HIE and seventeen healthy controls were recruited from the NICU and the well baby nursery, respectively. A combination of frequency domain near infrared spectroscopy (FDNIRS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) systems was used to non-invasively

Impact of stepwise hyperventilation on cerebral tissue oxygen saturation in anesthetized patients: a mechanistic study.

BACKGROUND: While the decrease in blood carbon dioxide (CO2 ) secondary to hyperventilation is generally accepted to play a major role in the decrease of cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO2 ), it remains unclear if the associated systemic hemodynamic changes are also accountable. METHODS: Twenty-six patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists I-II) undergoing nonneurosurgical procedures were anesthetized with either propofol-remifentanil (n = 13) or sevoflurane (n = 13). During a stable intraoperative period, ventilation was adjusted stepwise from hypoventilation to hyperventilation

Imaging the effects of oxygen saturation changes in voluntary apnea and hyperventilation on susceptibility-weighted imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebrovascular oxygenation changes during respiratory challenges have clinically important implications for brain function, including cerebral autoregulation and the rate of brain metabolism. SWI is sensitive to venous oxygenation level by exploitation of the magnetic susceptibility of deoxygenated blood. We assessed cerebral venous blood oxygenation changes during simple voluntary breath-holding (apnea) and hyperventilation by use of SWI at 3T. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed SWI scans (3T; acquisition time of 1 minute, 28 seconds; centered on the anterior commis

Chemical looping combustion of biomass-derived syngas using ceria-supported oxygen carriers.

Cu, Ni and Fe oxides supported on ceria were investigated for their performance as oxygen carriers during the chemical looping combustion of biomass-derived syngas. A complex gas mixture containing CO, H2, CO2, CH4 and other hydrocarbons was used to simulate the complex fuel gas environment derived from biomass gasification. Results show that the transfer of the stored oxygen into oxidants for the supported Cu and Ni oxides at 800°C for the combustion of syngas was effective (>85%). The unsupported Cu oxide showed high oxygen carrying capacity but particle sintering was observed at 800°C. A re

The effects of dissolved oxygen and triploidy on critical thermal maximum in brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis).

This study examined the effect of dissolved oxygen (DO) level on critical thermal maximum (CTMax) in diploid and triploid brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) exposed to a temperature increase of 3°C/h. Because gas solubility is inversely proportional to temperature, DO declines during standard CTMax tests. With this treatment as a baseline, oxygen or nitrogen injection was used to provide three other DO conditions during CTMax tests: two hyperoxic (maintenance at initial 10mg/L and increase from 10mg/L at 2mg/L/h) and one hypoxic (decrease from 10mg/L at 2mg/L/h). Hyperoxia had no effect on te

Pediatric single-lumen cannula venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a French center experience.

Single-lumen cannula venovenous (VV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a special extracorporeal life support (ECLS) technique used for neonatal and pediatric refractory hypoxemia. This is an alternative flow rate ECLS that consists of successive clamping on the drainage and the injection lines. Currently, the Armand-Trousseau's pediatric intensive care unit remains the only pediatric ECMO center proposing this partial assistance. This article details a technical note and a retrospective analysis of our experience in refractory hypoxemia. The retrospective study, from 2007 to 2011,

The effect of intravenous perfluorocarbon emulsions on whole-body oxygenation after severe decompression sickness.

INTRODUCTION: Decompression sickness (DCS) results from a decrease in ambient pressure leading to supersaturation of tissues with inert gas and bubble formation. Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) are able to dissolve vast amounts of non-polar gases. Intravenous (IV) PFC emulsions reduce both morbidity and mortality associated with DCS, but the mechanism of this protective effect has not yet been demonstrated. METHODS: Juvenile Dorper-cross sheep (n = 31) were anaesthetised and instrumented for physiological monitoring, IV fluid administration and blood sampling. Animals were compressed in air in a hype

Role of actin-bundling protein Sac6 in growth of Cryptococcus neoformans at low oxygen concentration.

Cryptococcus neoformans, the etiologic agent of cryptococcosis, is an obligately aerobic yeast that inhabits an environmental niche exposed to ambient air. The cell doubling time was significantly prolonged under 1% O(2) relative to that under normoxic conditions. No apparent cell cycle arrest occurred following a shift from ambient air to 1% O(2). However, yeast cells became hypersensitive to the actin monomer-sequestering agent latrunculin A at 1% O(2), indicating that proper actin function is critical for growth at low oxygen concentrations. We showed that Sac6, an actin-binding protein, pl
