Impact of childhood household support on depression and self-reported mental and physical health.

BACKGROUND: Perceived household support during childhood defined as the presence of an adult who consistently tried to ensure that basic needs were met has lasting effects on mental and physical health across the life course. While its protective role is well recognized, less is known about whether these associations vary across gender and racial/ethnic groups. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 31,233 U.S. adults from the 2021-2024 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The primary exposure was self-reported childhood household support, categorized as "Never," "

Implementing Quality Improvement Changes to a Free Sports Physical Program in a Rural Community.

BACKGROUND: Populations living in rural communities face significant barriers to accessing health care services. The faculty at a Midwest university previously partnered with regional school nurses to offer free, after-hours preparticipation physical examinations to encourage a healthy lifestyle. LOCAL PROBLEM: Obesity rates are high, and physical activity, essential for adolescent health, is disproportionately low in this region. METHODS: The examinations included medical histories, visual acuities, heights and weights, blood pressures, and blood glucose levels; students with abnormal findi

Basic motor competencies and the amount of physical education in European primary school children.

Children show large differences in their basic motor competencies (BMC), which are key learning objectives of physical education (PE) and serve as a foundation for participating in school-based and extracurricular sports. While individual determinants, including age, sex, and extracurricular physical activity, are known to consistently predict BMC, studies investigating the role of structural aspects of PE on children's BMC levels are lacking. This study examined whether weekly PE time is associated with differences in BMC levels in children across Europe, beyond individual factors. Endogenous

Long-term physical health conditions and youth anxiety and depression: Is there a causal link?

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of youth anxiety and depression has increased globally, with limited causal explanations. Long-term physical health conditions (LTCs) affect 20-40% of youth, with rates also rising. LTCs are associated with higher rates of youth depression and anxiety; however, it is uncertain whether observed associations are causal or explained by unmeasured confounding or reverse causation. METHODS: Using data from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and Norwegian National Patient Registry, we investigated phenotypic associations between childhood LTCs, an

Effects of Induced Physical Fatigue on Heart Rate Variability in Healthy Young Adults.

Detecting physical fatigue can help prevent overexertion. While typically defined at the muscle level, systemic fatigue remains less clear. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects autonomic adaptability to physical stressors and may provide insight into fatigue-related responses. This study investigated the impact of physical fatigue on HRV and its correlation with endurance performance. Twenty participants (9 F, 11 M; 23.4 ± 5.0 y) walked on the treadmill at 1.25 m/s with progressively increased incline. HRV metrics were derived from baseline standing (STAND), pre-fatigued (PRE) and post-fatigu

Associations between physical activity, adiposity, appetite and metabolic health in adolescent males.

Regular physical activity for adults is associated with optimal appetite regulation, though little work has been performed in adolescents. To address this gap in the literature, we conducted a study examining appetite across a range of physical activity and adiposity levels in adolescent males. Healthy males (n 46, 14-18 years old) were recruited across four body weight and activity categories: normal weight/high active (n 11), normal weight/low active (n 13), overweight, obese/high active (n 14), overweight and obese/low active (n 8). Participants from each group completed a 6-h appetite asse

The effect of chair-based exercise on physical functioning in postmenopausal women: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Following menopause, women commonly experience accelerated losses in muscular strength, flexibility, and balance, predisposing them to falls and osteoporotic fractures. Guidelines suggest that chair-based exercise (CBE) has shown the potential to prevent loss of physical functioning. Theoretically, it is a safe and effective alternative for postmenopausal women to exercise while seated. However, its efficacy in postmenopausal women has not been comprehensively quantified. This systematic review addresses this gap by focusing exclusively on postmenopausal women, synthesizing evidence

Objective physical activity and Alzheimer's disease burden in the population-based Rotterdam Study.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is linked to lower dementia risk, but its connection to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology remains uncertain. This study examined the relationship between objectively measured physical activity and early AD biomarkers in cognitively unimpaired adults. METHODS: Accelerometer-measured physical activity and plasma AD biomarkers (beta-amyloid [Aβ]42/Aβ40, p-tau217) were assessed in 242 participants (age = 63.37 [54-79] years) of the population-based Rotterdam Study. Cortical Aβ was assessed via 18F-florbetaben positron emission tomography (PET) 7 years later. Robus
