INTRODUCTION: Pleural involvement is an uncommon manifestation of sarcoidosis. It may manifest as pleural effusion, pneumothorax, pleural thickening and nodules, hydropneumothorax, trapped lung, hemothorax, or chylothorax. The incidence of pleural effusion with sarcoidosis ranges from 0% to 5% but has been reported to be as high as 7.5%. Pleural effusions complicate sarcoidosis in < 3% of patients.

Suicidal ingestion of undiluted hydrochloric acid is a rare but live-threatening event. We report on the dramatic and fulminant course of a 61-year-old woman who drank 200 ml of 30-33% hydrochloric acid. On admission to our intensive care unit she was alert and oriented with stable vital signs. Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is an autoimmune, necrotizing granulomatous disease of unknown aetiology that affects small and medium blood vessels, and is usually recurrent. Non-invasive techniques of respiratory support were developed in order to reduce the adverse effects associated with ventilation via an endotracheal tube. Short bi-nasal prongs provide the most effective nasal interface for delivery of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). Devices used to generate CPAP include conventional ventilators, the 'bubbly bottle' system and the infant flow driver. NCPAP improves the rate of successful extubation. It is useful for preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome, reducing time spent on an endotracheal tube and oxygen requirement at 28d.

The authors summarized the results of ten years care of adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). They treated a total of 45 patients incl. 26 men and 19 women. Nineteen patients (42%) died. The objective of this paper was to examine the major anaesthetic problems during transthoracic endoscopic sympathectomy without artificial pneumothorax and to present our experience of 16 cases suffering from Raynaud's disease. For the perioperative management we used a double lumen endo-bronchial tube and balanced anaesthesia (intravenous agents plus isoflurane). Arterial pressure, heart rate, ECG, end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration, SatO2, blood gases and peak inspiratory pressures were monitored. The results showed that no significant changes in these parameters occurred during surgery.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate supine chest radiographs obtained by DLR for the diagnosis of pleural and parenchymatous changes and to compare the accuracy of observers in relation to their experience. 50 examinations, which had been checked by CT, were chosen. The images were examined by 7 doctors (2 non-radiologists, 5 radiologists).
