OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the administration of local anesthetic (LA) reduces pain in comparison with forced coughing (FC) for the execution of colposcopically guided biopsies (CGBs).
STUDY DESIGN: Data of 100 consecutive patients undergoing CGBs with the use of LA or FC were prospectively evaluated. Procedure-related pain was assessed with the use of a 100-mm visual analogue scale.

The aim of the current study was to determine the pattern, presentation and management of foreign body aspiration in our population. This prospective study comprised 55 patients with foreign body aspiration admitted to our department from January 2009 to December 2011. BACKGROUND: The rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm is a highly lethal event, claiming approximately 15,000 lives each year. Traditionally, open surgical repair has been the mainstay for treatment. However, this surgery is associated with almost a 50% perioperative mortality rate. Minimally invasive endovascular stent grafts have been used with great success in the elective repair of aortic aneurysms. This technology has subsequently been applied to the repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms with a substantial reduction in the periprocedural death rate and associated complications.

The most serious early complication after rectal resection with low anastomosis is anastomotic leakage (AL). AL may compromise the long-term conservation of the anastomosis and also worsen oncological results. Fistula arising from the glands of the anal crypts is the most common form of anoperineal sepsis. It is characterized by a primary internal orifice in the anal canal, a fistulous tract, and an abscess and/or secondary perineal orifice with purulent discharge. Antibiotics are not curative. The treatment of an abscess is urgent and consists, whenever possible, of incision and drainage under local anesthesia. Definitive treatment of the fistulous tract can await a second stage. Surgical castration of giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) has not been commonly performed. Large domestic animal castration has a significant complication rate that includes postoperative mortality. Documentation of castration techniques and complications in large domestic animals occurs regularly. However, literature describing castration experiences with large zoo mammals is sparse. In addition, a suitable anesthetic regimen for surgical castration of giraffe has not been confirmed. Open castration using an emasculator plus ligation was performed in three subadult giraffe weighing 555-711 kg.
