The abnormalities in eating behavior associated with bulimia nervosa suggest that patients with this illness may have a disturbance in satiety. The present study employed a six-meal protocol to assess satiety in both binge and non-binge eating episodes in women with bulimia nervosa and normal controls by examining whether an increase in the size of a soup preload led to a decrease in the amount of food consumed in a subsequent test meal. In control subjects, the increase in preload size was associated with an increase in fullness and a reduction in consumption of the non-binge test meal. Patie

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in body weight gain produced by lesions of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) was studied in adult female rats that had been sympathectomized from birth for 3 weeks with daily injections of guanethidine (0.01 ml/g body weight) starting the second day after birth. Female littermates injected with 0.15 M NaCl served as controls. Body weight gain during the dynamic phase after the VMH lesion was the same in the sympathectomized and control groups of rats, whereas the treated rats gained weight at a slower rate than the controls in the sta

Two experiments investigated the effect of opioids on ingestion of sweet solutions in non-deprived rats. Experiment 1 replicated previous work from our laboratory showing virtually complete inhibition of sucrose and saccharin intake during 10 days of daily naloxone treatment. During recovery, prior naloxone experience significantly stimulated sucrose intake but had no effect on saccharin intake. In the absence of naloxone treatment, ingestive experience alone reduced naloxone's typical intake-suppressant effect. These findings suggest that drug experience and ingestive experience may interact

Based on laboratory results, restrained eating has been linked to the development of binge eating and eating disorder syndromes such as bulimia nervosa. This study was designed to extend the scope of investigation of the concept of restrained eating beyond the laboratory. Eating behavior and biochemical indices of nutritional state were investigated in 60 young women, who were divided in restrained and unrestrained eaters by questionnaire. Seven-day records of food intake showed that the high-restraint group ate around 400 kcal a day fewer than the low-restraint group. Group differences in act

The associations between generalized obesity measured as body mass index (BMI), or adipose tissue distribution, measured as the waist/hip circumference ratio (WHR), on one hand, and a number of socioeconomic, somatic as well as psychologic and mental health variables on the other, were analysed in a population study of women (1462 participants, aged 38-60 years, participation rate 90.1%). The anthropometric measurements were adjusted for their influence on each other. BMI, but not WHR, was negatively associated with socioeconomic status and education. Increased WHR correlated to a number of so

Aldosterone diminishes the ability to endure starvation. Its exogenous administration to adrenalectomized rats advances the onset of hypothermia and death. The impairment seems to lie in an inability to mobilize energy stores fully: animals given the steroid are unable to lose weight at a normal rate. The findings help to establish the significance of mineralocorticoids in the regulation of energy exchange and solve some theoretical questions as to their general mode of action.

Because suckling behavior differs in many ways from later ingestive behavior, the development of feeding and drinking in rats is best studied apart from the normal suckling situation. Newborn rat pups, separated from their mothers, will actively ingest diet infused into their mouths or spread on the floor beneath them. Such "independent" ingestion resembles the ingestive behavior of adult animals, but it also undergoes developmental changes in organization and control during the pre- and post-weaning periods: When young, deprived pups are fed, they show generalized, non-directed behavioral exc

BACKGROUND: With the rising prevalence of aging worldwide, there is a necessity for reliable and frequent assessments of older individuals' health status to manage and potentially prevent age-related complications. Digital health technologies (DHTs), such as wearable devices, provide an opportunity to gather objective, continuous, and unobtrusive measurements, enabling effective health management in everyday life.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the relationship between digital endpoints and frailty, nutritional status, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in older individuals, as well as qua

BACKGROUND: Critical care nurses are vulnerable to depression, which not only lead to poor well-being and increased turnover intention, but also affect their working performances and organizational productivity as well. Work related factors are important drivers of depressive symptoms. However, the non-liner and multi-directional relationships between job demands-resources and depressive symptoms in critical care nurses has not been adequately analyzed. Understanding these relationships would be helpful for reducing depression, increasing nurses' well-being and retain healthcare forces.

BACKGROUND: Bullying victimization is highly prevalent among sexual minority youths, particularly in educational settings, negatively affecting their mental health. However, previous studies have scarcely explored the symptomatic relationships among anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among sexual minority youths who experienced bullying on college campuses.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of our study were to (1) characterize the anxiety-depression-PTSD network structures of gay or lesbian, bisexuals, and other sexual minority youths previously bullied on college campuses

BACKGROUND: Growth failure and poor nutritional status are common features in children with chronic diseases due to reduced appetite, malabsorption and increased nutritional requirements associated with some diseases. The provision of oral protein calorie supplements is one of a number of interventions used to improve nutritional status in these children. The use of these products, which are expensive, may be associated with a number of adverse effects, for example, they may effect development of normal eating behaviour patterns or lead to unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are key epigenetic regulators that modulate chromatin accessibility and transcriptional programs controlling metabolism, energy balance, and reward-related behaviors. Aberrant HDACs activity contributes to metabolic dysfunction by altering adipogenesis, thermogenic capacity, lipid profile, and hypothalamic circuits governing appetite. In obesity, specific HDAC isoforms promote adipocyte hypertrophy, impair browning of white adipose tissue, disrupt mitochondrial function, and exacerbate inflammation and insulin resistance. HDAC inhibitors (HDACi) counteract these ef

Obesity is sustained by a self-reinforcing pathological microenvironment within white adipose tissue (WAT), characterized by a triad of hypoxia, oxidative and nitrosative stress, and chronic inflammation. However, current anti-obesity therapies target appetite regulation or nutrient absorption without directly correcting this local dysfunction. Here, we report a bioinspired organic single-atom nanozyme for localized thermocatalytic reprogramming of obese adipose tissue. The nanomedicine comprises atomically dispersed ruthenium catalytic centers embedded within a polydopamine framework (Ru@PDA)

Elucidating the neuronal circuits that govern appetite requires precise, high-resolution monitoring of the microstructure of solid food consumption, a need unmet by existing tools, which are either costly or lack the temporal resolution to align feeding events with neuronal activity. To overcome this, we developed the Crunchometer, a low-cost, open-source acoustic system that uses computational algorithms to generate high-resolution feeding ethograms from the sounds produced during solid food consumption. Validation across energy states (hunger/satiety) confirmed its sensitivity to changes in

This study aims to evaluate young people's perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors regarding food waste in the North-West region of Romania. It seeks to identify key factors influencing awareness and practices, quantify the attitude-behavior gap, and propose targeted educational and policy interventions. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between July and October 2024 using a 17-item questionnaire. Snowball sampling via social media and educational networks yielded 955 valid responses from participants aged 14-33 across six counties. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, Kruskal-Wallis t

We report a paradoxical case of a 40-year-old man with class 2 obesity (body mass index 39.8 kg/m2) and insulin resistance (homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance [HOMA-IR] 5.0; reference <2.0) who achieved minimal weight loss (<5%) despite tirzepatide dose escalation to 15 mg weekly over 6 months. Following switch to semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly, the patient achieved 20% weight loss over 6 months, with normalization of fasting glucose, resolution of insulin resistance, and marked improvement in appetite control. This case challenges the assumption that dual glucose-dependent insulino

Obesity is a rapidly increasing global health challenge that is strongly linked to the cardiorenometabolic syndrome, cardiovascular morbidity, and mortality. Lifestyle interventions remain the cornerstone of treatment, but average long-term weight loss is modest and durable weight maintenance is often limited. Bariatric surgery is not suitable for all patients, and substantial weight regain occurs in a considerable proportion over time. Glucagon-like peptide‑1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), originally developed for type 2 diabetes (T2D), have emerged as potent agents for weight reduction and ca

BACKGROUND: Feed intake (FI) in broilers is significantly influenced by dietary energy levels through the brain-gut axis (BGA), profoundly affecting growth performance. The mechanisms underlying dietary energy regulation of FI and intestinal health via BGA remain unclear.
AIM: This study investigated the effects of low- (LED, 2,900 kcal/kg), medium- (MED, 3,200 kcal/kg), and high-energy diets (HED, 3,500 kcal/kg) on BGA function over 21 days.
RESULTS: We found that increasing dietary energy reduced FI but increased body weight gain and improved feed conversion ratio. MED elevated anorexigeni

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether objective audiometric hearing loss and subjective hearing difficulty show differential associations with depressive symptoms in a nationally representative Korean population.
METHODS: Data were obtained from 6589 participants aged ≥40 years in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2020 and 2022). Hearing status was classified into four groups based on pure-tone audiometry (≥26 dB HL at 0.5-4 kHz in the better ear) and self-reported hearing difficulty. Depressive symptoms were defined as a Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score ≥ 10, wi
