Biomechanical Analysis of Normal Brain Development during the First Year of Life Using Finite Strain Theory.

The first year of life is the most critical time period for structural and functional development of the human brain. Combining longitudinal MR imaging and finite strain theory, this study aimed to provide new insights into normal brain development through a biomechanical framework. Thirty-three normal infants were longitudinally imaged using MRI from 2 weeks to 1 year of age. Voxel-wise Jacobian determinant was estimated to elucidate volumetric changes while Lagrange strains (both normal and shear strains) were measured to reveal directional growth information every 3 months during the first

Altered Structural Brain Networks in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is characterized by benign hamartomas in multiple organs including the brain and its clinical phenotypes may be associated with abnormal neural connections. We aimed to provide the first detailed findings on disrupted structural brain networks in TSC patients. Structural whole-brain connectivity maps were constructed using structural and diffusion MRI in 20 TSC (age range: 3-24 years) and 20 typically developing (TD; 3-23 years) subjects. We assessed global (short- and long-association and interhemispheric fibers) and regional white matter connectivity, and per

Fatal mechanical asphyxia induces changes in energy utilization in the rat brain: An (18)F-FDG-PET study.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate changes in brain glucose metabolism in rats following ligature strangulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen male Wistar rats were used in the present study, divided into control (n=7) and asphyxia groups (n=6, ligature strangulation). Positron emission tomography (PET) with 2-deoxy-2-[(18)F]fluoro-D-glucose ((18)F-FDG) was used to evaluate brain glucose metabolism. Rats were scanned for PET-CT, and image data co-registered with a T2WI MRI template using SPM8 software. Image J was employed to draw regions of interest (ROIs) from the MRI template a

Neuroanatomy of the brachial plexus: the missing link in the continuity between the central and peripheral nervous systems.

The brachial plexus is a complex network of nerves which extends from the neck to the axilla and which supplies motor, sensory, and sympathetic fibers to the upper extremity. Generally it is formed by the union of the ventral primary rami of the spinal nerves, C5-C8 and T1, the so-called "roots" of the brachial plexus. The goal here is to examine the neural architecture of the brachial plexus. The most constant arrangement of nerve fibers will be delineated, and then the predominant variations in neural architecture will be defined, particularly the prefixed and postfixed plexus, as well as th

Targeted deletion of both thymidine phosphorylase and uridine phosphorylase and consequent disorders in mice.

Thymidine phosphorylase (TP) regulates intracellular and plasma thymidine levels. TP deficiency is hypothesized to (i) increase levels of thymidine in plasma, (ii) lead to mitochondrial DNA alterations, and (iii) cause mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE). In order to elucidate the physiological roles of TP, we generated mice deficient in the TP gene. Although TP activity in the liver was inhibited in these mice, it was fully maintained in the small intestine. Murine uridine phosphorylase (UP), unlike human UP, cleaves thymidine, as well as uridine. We therefore genera

BG-YOLO11s: Boundary-Guided YOLO11 with Bézier Contour Augmentation for Brain Tumour Segmentation in T1-CE MRI.

Background/Objectives: Accurate delineation of brain tumours on contrast-enhanced MRI remains difficult because lesions can be small, irregular, and weakly separated from adjacent tissue. This study developed BG-YOLO11s, a boundary-guided single-stage instance-segmentation model for T1 contrast-enhanced MRI. Methods: The public Figshare/Cheng dataset, comprising 3064 slices from 233 patients, was converted to YOLO polygon annotations and evaluated using a fixed 70/15/15 image-level split (2144/459/461 slices). Because patient identifiers were not retained in the exported image-and-polygon data

Altered Neurocritical Care Management of Patients with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Following Changed Positions of the Zero-Reference Points for Intracranial and Arterial Pressure Measurement.

BACKGROUND: Many traumatic brain injury (TBI) treatment protocols, including the Lund concept, advocate the highest point of the subarachnoid space (typically the vertex) as the zero-reference point for intracranial pressure (ICP) and the level of the right atrium as the zero-reference point for mean arterial blood pressure (MAP). In 2017, at the Department of Neurosurgery in Lund, Sweden, the zero-reference points for ICP and MAP were both changed to the external auditory meatus (EAM), thus altering the calculated cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) levels. We hypothesized that the ICP and MAP

Relationship of common hemodynamic and respiratory target parameters with brain tissue oxygen tension in the absence of hypoxemia or hypotension after cardiac arrest: A post-hoc analysis of an experimental study using a pig model.

Brain tissue oxygen tension (PbtO2)-guided care, a therapeutic strategy to treat or prevent cerebral hypoxia through modifying determinants of cerebral oxygen delivery, including arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2), and mean arterial pressure (MAP), has recently been introduced. Studies have reported that cerebral hypoxia occurs after cardiac arrest in the absence of hypoxemia or hypotension. To obtain preliminary information on the degree to which PbtO2 is responsive to changes in the common target variables for PbtO2-guided care in conditions without hypoxemia or

A Swine Model of Severe Propranolol Toxicity Permitting Direct Measurement of Brain Tissue Oxygenation.

INTRODUCTION: High-dose insulin (HDI) therapy has been used successfully for beta-blocker toxicity, but needs further study when hypotension persists despite HDI. The objective was to develop a model of propranolol toxicity with persistent hypotension despite HDI and to develop means to measure cerebral oxygen tension (PbrO2). METHODS: Eight anesthetized Yorkshire pigs were instrumented with a tracheostomy, Swan-Ganz catheter, arterial catheter, and intra-cerebral pressure and oxygen monitor. Intravenous propranolol was given until the initial point of toxicity (POT); 25% reduction from basel

Noninvasive Assessment of Oxygen Extraction Fraction in Chronic Ischemia Using Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping at 7 Tesla.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) is an effective metric to evaluate metabolic reserve in chronic ischemia. However, OEF is considered to be accurately measured only when using positron emission tomography (PET). Thus, we investigated whether OEF maps generated by magnetic resonance quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) at 7 Tesla enabled detection of OEF changes when compared with those obtained with PET. METHODS: Forty-one patients with chronic stenosis/occlusion of the unilateral internal carotid artery or middle cerebral artery were examined using 7 Tesla-MR

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (nclf), a new disorder of the mouse linked to chromosome 9.

The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) comprise a set of at least 6 distinct human and an unknown number of animal diseases characterized by storage of proteolipids in lysosomes of many cell types. By unknown mechanisms, this accumulation leads to or is associated with severe neuronal and retinal degeneration. The genes for 3 human NCLs, infantile, late infantile, and juvenile, have been cloned. The first murine form of NCL, the motor neuron degeneration (mnd) mouse, has been described and mapped to proximal Chromosome 8. Here we describe a second genetic variant of NCL in the mouse, neuron

Phantom-Enhanced High Mechanical Accuracy for Frame-Based Deep Brain Stimulation.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that depends on high-accuracy targeting of structures to implant electrodes within the brain. The positioning of these electrodes in the brain determines the long-term efficacy of treating diseases such as Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, or dystonia. Misplaced electrodes in DBS can lead to poor efficacy and stimulation-induced side effects. Widespread targeting errors and variability have been published throughout the literature. As such, improvement in targeting accuracy is needed to enhance the quality of the procedures. A ster

High field brain proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and volumetry in children with chronic, compensated liver disease - A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that children or young adults having acquired liver disease in childhood display neurocognitive impairment which may become more apparent as they grow older. The molecular, cellular and morphological underpinnings of this clinical problem are incompletely understood. AIM: Therefore, we used the advantages of highly-resolved proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy at ultra-high magnetic field to analyze the neurometabolic profile and brain morphometry of children with chronic, compensated liver disease, hypothesizing that with high field spectroscopy we

Long-term reactions to pulsatile tinnitus are marked by weakened short-range functional connectivity within a brain network in the right temporal lobe.

BACKGROUND: There have been recent efforts to characterize brain functional activity features in patients with pulsatile tinnitus (PT). These efforts have revealed evidence of aberrant functional connectivity (FC) of the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) in PT patients with prolonged disease duration. PURPOSE: To assess the possible predictive effect of aberrant FC of MTG in PT patients with prolonged disease duration. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Thirty-four patients with recent-onset PT (RPTIN), 24 patients with long-term PT (LPTIN), and 35 age-, gender-, and education-matched h

Edema fluid accumulation within necrotic brain tissue as a cause of the mass effect of cerebral contusion in head trauma patients.

The early massive edema caused by severe cerebral contusion results in progressive intracranial pressure (ICP) elevation and clinical deterioration within 24-72 hours post-trauma. Surgical excision of the necrotic brain tissue represents the only therapy, which can provide satisfactory control of the elevated ICP and clinical deterioration. In order to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the early massive edema, we have carried out a series of detailed clinical studies. Diffusion magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and apparent diffusion co-efficient (ADC) mapping suggest that cells in the central

[Location of primary somatosensory area in cerebral arteriovenous malformation involving sensorimotor area].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cortical reorganization associated with congenital brain lesion such as intracerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Dipole source localization of somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) was performed in five patients with AVM encompassing sensorimotor cortex. Dipole tracing method combined with the scalp-skull-brain head model (Homma et al., 1994) was used to locate dipole source of an early cortical component of SEP elicited by median nerve electrical stimulation. The location of dipole source of SEP, which could be considered as the hand area

Stimulant medications affect arousal and reward, not attention.

Prescription stimulants such as methylphenidate are being used by an increasing portion of the population, primarily children. These potent norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors promote wakefulness, suppress appetite, enhance physical performance, and are purported to increase attentional abilities. Prior functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have yielded conflicting results about the effects of stimulants on the brain's attention, action/motor, and salience regions that are difficult to reconcile with their proposed attentional effects. Here, we utilized resting-state

Molecular Imaging of Human Brain Organoids Using Mass Spectrometry.

Brain organoid models serve as a powerful tool for studying human brain development and function. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI), a cutting-edge technology, allows us to map the spatial distribution of diverse molecules such as lipids, sugars, amino acids, drugs, and their metabolites within these organoids, all without the need for specific molecular probes. High-quality MSI data hinge on meticulous sample preparation. Fixatives play a pivotal role, but conventional options such as glutaraldehyde, paraformaldehyde, and cryopreserving such as sucrose may inadvertently impact tissue metabolite
