Current Approaches and New Developments in the Pharmacological Management of Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown etiology characterized by spontaneous, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics. Once thought to be rare, TS affects 0.3-1% of the population. Tics can cause physical discomfort, emotional distress, social difficulties, and can interfere with education and desired activities. The pharmacologic treatment of TS is particularly challenging, as currently the genetics, neurophysiology, and neuropathology of this disorder are still largely unknown. However, clinical experience gained from treating TS has helped us better u

PBPK in Preterm and Term Neonates: A Review.

INTRODUCTION: The neonatal population remains one of the populations in which appropriate dosing regimens are still lacking, resulting in a large off-label or unlicensed use. Clinical research in these small infants remains a challenge, which sparks the need for modeling and simulation as an additional tool for neonatal drug research. METHODS: The use of physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling in preterm and term neonates is investigated. RESULTS: Throughout the last decade, the use of this modeling technique in this vulnerable population has received increased attention, but still ma

Birth prevalence of congenital talipes equinovarus in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot, is a structural malformation that develops early in gestation. Birth prevalence of clubfoot is reported to vary both between and within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and this information is needed to plan treatment services. This systematic review aimed to understand the birth prevalence of clubfoot in LMIC settings. METHODS: Six databases were searched for studies that reported birth prevalence of clubfoot in LMICs. Results were screened and assessed for eligibility using pre-defined criteria. Data on birth prevalence

Implicit learning of non-linguistic and linguistic regularities in children with dyslexia.

One of the hallmarks of dyslexia is the failure to automatise written patterns despite repeated exposure to print. Although many explanations have been proposed to explain this problem, researchers have recently begun to explore the possibility that an underlying implicit learning deficit may play a role in dyslexia. This hypothesis has been investigated through non-linguistic tasks exploring implicit learning in a general domain. In this study, we examined the abilities of children with dyslexia to implicitly acquire positional regularities embedded in both non-linguistic and linguistic stimu

Preserving alveolar bone growth following cervical root fracture: a case report.

Root fracture injuries affect 0.5%-7% of permanent teeth. Although cervical root fractures are less frequent in children, their serious consequences and poor prognosis may lead to tooth loss. In this case presentation, we discuss a treatment approach chosen to preserve alveolar bone growth following a cervical root fracture in an 8-Year-old boy.

Shallow and deep orthographies in Hebrew: the role of vowelization in reading development for unvowelized scripts.

The present study explored the speed, accuracy, and reading comprehension of vowelized versus unvowelized scripts among 126 native Hebrew speaking children in second, fourth, and sixth grades. Findings indicated that second graders read and comprehended vowelized scripts significantly more accurately and more quickly than unvowelized scripts, whereas among fourth and sixth graders reading of unvowelized scripts developed to a greater degree than the reading of vowelized scripts. An analysis of the mediation effect for children's mastery of vowelized reading speed and accuracy on their mastery

[Pediatric heart surgery in developing countries. Twenty years experience of La Chaine de L'espoir (Chain of Hope)].

Because of their high incidence, cardiac disorders in children are now a public health issue. These children require multidisciplinary management, but surgery is sometimes unavoidable. The two most frequent types of cardiac disorder in children are congenital defects and rheumatic valve disease. La Chaine de l'Espoir (Chain of Hope) is present in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Due to the socio-economic context and lack of technical resources, pediatric heart surgery has several particular characteristics in developing countries. Infants rarely undergo cardiac surge

[Rotavirus infections].

Rotaviruses are genetically highly variable, non-enveloped viruses with a double-stranded, segmented ribonucleic acid genome. They are a major cause of gastroenteritis worldwide. In children aged less than 5 years, they are the most frequent agent of severe acute diarrheal illnesses. In less developed countries, rotavirus diseases are one of the most frequent causes of death in infants and little children. Typically, symptomatic rotavirus diseases in infants (<5 years) and the elderly (>70 years) arise with sudden onset of watery diarrhoea with high risk of dehydration, accompanied by vomiting

Caustic ingestion in children.

Caustic ingestion continues to be a significant problem worldwide especially in developing countries. In 2008 over 200,000 exposures to caustic substances were reported to the National Poison Data System. The presence or absence of symptoms or oral lesions does not predict the existence or severity of lesions. The best predictor of morbidity and mortality is the extent of injury as assessed during initial evaluation. Upper endoscopy remains the mainstay diagnostic modality for the evaluation of patients with caustic ingestion. There is a pressing need for noninvasive diagnostic modalities and

Developmental disorders of language and literacy: special issue.

Language and literacy are cognitive skills of exceptional complexity. It is therefore not surprising that they are at risk of impairment either during development or as a result of damage (e.g. stroke) later in life. Impaired language and literacy can arise from a general learning impairment. However, two developmental disorders, specific language impairment (SLI) and dyslexia, which affect oral and written language, respectively, are 'specific' in that they are not part of a more general learning difficulty. SLI and dyslexia each affect 5-10% of the general population, and they are the focus

A systematic meta-analytic review of evidence for the effectiveness of the 'Fast ForWord' language intervention program.

BACKGROUND: Fast ForWord is a suite of computer-based language intervention programs designed to improve children's reading and oral language skills. The programs are based on the hypothesis that oral language difficulties often arise from a rapid auditory temporal processing deficit that compromises the development of phonological representations. METHODS: A systematic review was designed, undertaken and reported using items from the PRISMA statement. A literature search was conducted using the terms 'Fast ForWord''Fast For Word''Fastforword' with no restriction on dates of publication. Foll

[Treatment of childhood cancer in Africa. Action of the Franco-African childhood cancer group].

The childhood cancer survival rate is currently 75% in industrialized countries. Rates in developing countries are much lower. The Franco-African Childhood Cancer Group (French acronym, GFAOP) was founded in 2000 with aim of reducing this unfavorable situation in Africa. The GFAOP has developed two forms of action. The main form consists of organizing two- to twelve-month training sessions for physicians and nurses in France and Morocco. The other form involves assessing the feasibility of modern treatment protocols for various cancers in Africa. The first feasibility trials were carried out o

Interpersonal and affective features of psychopathy in children and adolescents: advancing a developmental perspective. Introduction to special section.

The interpersonal (e.g., manipulative, deceitful) and affective (e.g., callous, unemotional) features associated with adult psychopathy have been identified in children and adolescents. Although early research suggests that these features have clinical utility in identifying a particularly severe and recalcitrant form of antisocial behavior with unique developmental origins, several issues regarding these features need to be addressed. This special section is designed to address developmental questions regarding the interpersonal/affective features of psychopathy that have been posed by resear

Concurrent validity of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II (BSID-II) Motor Scale and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale II (PDMS-2) in 12-month-old infants.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to examine concurrent validity of the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale II (PDMS-2) and the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II (BSID-II) Motor Scale. METHODS: The PDMS-2 and the BSID-II Motor Scale were administered to fifteen 12-month-old infants who were developing typically. PDMS-2 raw scores were converted to the Gross Motor Quotient (GMQ), the Fine Motor Quotient (FMQ), and the Total Motor Quotient (TMQ). BSID-II raw scores were converted to the Psychomotor Development Index (PDI). Age equivalent scores were obtained for all PDMS-2 Gross and Fine Moto

Growth disturbance in aseptic osteonecrosis of the humeral trochlea (Hegemann's Disease): a case report with developmental distal radioulnar joint incongruency.

A rare case of aseptic osteonecrosis of the humeral trochlea is described. The patient presented with a late onset of wrist pain caused by a length discrepancy with the short ulna relative to the radius. Close observation is needed for the regeneration of humeral trochlea, as well as for the significant effects of growth disturbance, which might cause the distal radioulnar joint incongruency.

A case of Kabuki (Niikawa-Kuroki) syndrome associated with manifestations resembling C-trigonocephaly syndrome.

We report a 2-year-old boy with overlapping manifestations of the Kabuki (Niikawa-Kuroki) and Opitz trigonocephaly syndromes. The proband was initially diagnosed with Opitz trigonocephaly syndrome on the basis of metopic craniosynostosis, upslanting palpebral fissures, high arched palate, redundant skin folds at the back of the neck, ventricular septal defect, broad flat thumbs, bilateral single palmar creases, left talipes equinovarus, eventration of right hemidiaphragm, and bilateral inguinal hernia. However, as he grew older, his facial profile changed to that typical of Kabuki syndrome.
