The changing landscape of electrical stimulation language mapping with subdural electrodes and stereoelectroencephalography for pediatric epilepsy: A literature review and commentary.

Electrical stimulation mapping (ESM) is used to locate the brain areas supporting language directly within the human cortex to minimize the risk of functional decline following epilepsy surgery. ESM is completed by utilizing subdural grid or depth electrodes (stereo-electroencephalography [sEEG]) in combination with behavioral evaluation of language. Despite technological advances, there is no standardized method of assessing language during pediatric ESM. To identify current clinical practices for pediatric ESM of language, we surveyed neuropsychologists in the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Con

Five days of bed rest in young and old adults: Retainment of skeletal muscle mass with neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

The consequences of short-term disuse are well known, but effective countermeasures remain elusive. This study investigated the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) during 5 days of bed rest on retaining lower limb muscle mass and muscle function in healthy young and old participants. One leg received NMES of the quadriceps muscle (3 × 30min/day) (NMES), and the other served as a control (CON). Isometric quadriceps strength (MVC), rate of force development (RFD), lower limb lean mass, and muscle thickness were assessed pre-and post-intervention. Muscle thickness remained unal

Is electrical cardioversion independently associated with infarcts on brain magnetic resonance imaging or clinical outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation?

BACKGROUND: Electrical cardioversion (ECV) is frequently performed in symptomatic atrial fibrillation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the association of ECV with infarcts on brain magnetic resonance imaging (bMRI) and clinical outcomes. METHODS: The Swiss Atrial Fibrillation Cohort Study included 2386 patients; 1731 patients were evaluated by bMRI. ECVs were recorded by questionnaire. Patients were assigned to categories by number of ECVs performed before enrollment (0, 1, ≥2). A bMRI study was conducted at baseline and after 2 years (n = 1227) and analyzed for large noncortical or co

Effects of different types of high-definition transcranial electrical stimulation on visual working memory and contralateral delayed activity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Working memory is critical for individuals and has been found to be improved by electrical stimulation of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). However, the effects of different types of transcranial electrical stimulation on working memory are controversial, and the underlying mechanism remains uncertain. In this study, high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) and high-definition transcranial random noise stimulation (HD-tRNS) were applied to the DLPFC to observe the different effects on visual working memory (VWM). The aim was to ex

Neural response properties predict perceived contents and locations elicited by intracranial electrical stimulation of human auditory cortex.

Intracranial electrical stimulation (iES) of auditory cortex can elicit sound experiences with a variety of perceived contents (hallucination or illusion) and locations (contralateral or bilateral side), independent of actual acoustic inputs. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this elicitation heterogeneity remain undiscovered. Here, we collected subjective reports following iES at 3062 intracranial sites in 28 patients (both sexes) and identified 113 auditory cortical sites with iES-elicited sound experiences. We then decomposed the sound-induced intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG

Tinnitus Suppression with Electrical Stimulation at the Most Basal Contact of the Cochlear Implant Electrode as a Model for Round Window Stimulation.

The objective of this research was to test whether efficient tinnitus suppression could be achieved by electrical stimulation of the single most basal electrode contact of a cochlear implant. This approach simulates the effects of electrical stimulation using a round-window electrode. The study was performed in 10 adult cochlear implant patients showing complete or almost complete tinnitus suppression during electrical stimulation with their standard fitting-MAP. In all patients, tinnitus appeared again when the implant was switched off. Five Nucleus implant (1 CI532, 4 CI24RE CA) users and 5

Use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) for Pain Management During Intrauterine Device Insertion: A Case Series.

This case series details the use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for pain management during intrauterine device (IUD) insertion in three different patients. We used a 100 mm horizontal line visual analog scale (VAS) to assess pain associated with the procedure. Case 1 is a 39-year-old primiparous female with a past medical history of depression who presented to the clinic for Mirena IUD insertion. The patient rated overall pain during the procedure as 10 mm, with the most discomfort during IUD placement inside the uterus, which she rated 20 mm. Case 2 is a 16-year-old nul

Dielectric barrier discharge plasma promotes disinfection-residual-bacteria inactivation via electric field and reactive species.

Traditional disinfection processes face significant challenges such as health and ecological risks associated with disinfection-residual-bacteria due to their single mechanism of action. Development of new disinfection processes with composite mechanisms is therefore urgently needed. In this study, we employed liquid ground-electrode dielectric barrier discharge (lgDBD) to achieve synergistic sterilization through electric field electroporation and reactive species oxidation. At a voltage of 12 kV, Pseudomonas fluorescens (ultraviolet and ozone-resistant) and Bacillus subtilis (chlorine-resist

Calculation of electric field gradients with the exact two-component (X2C) quasi-relativistic method and its local approximations.

When calculating electric field gradients (EFGs), relativistic and electron correlation effects are crucial for obtaining accurate results, and the commonly used density functional methods produce unsatisfactory results, especially for heavy elements and/or strongly correlated systems. In this work, a stand-alone program is presented, which enables calculation of EFGs from the molecular orbitals supplied by an external high accuracy quantum chemical calculation and includes relativistic effects through the exact two-component (X2C) formalism and efficient local approximations to it. Outcomes of para-sacral transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation in treatment of primary and refractory overactive bladder among children.

BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder (OAB) is the most prevalent lower urinary tract dysfunction among children. Refractory OAB lacks response to the first line treatments, including anticholinergic, and it is a major clinical challenge. This study aims to compare the efficacy of para-sacral transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (PS-TENS) in the treatment of primary and refractory OAB among children. METHODS: A prospective, randomized clinical study included 64 children aged 5-12 years with OAB divided equally into two groups: group (1) included 32 children with treatment-naive OAB, while group

Effect of Oriented External Electric Fields on the Electronic Properties of Linear Acenes: A Thermally Assisted Occupation DFT Study.

Recently, oriented external electric fields (OEEFs) have earned much attention due to the possibility of tuning the properties of electronic systems. From a theoretical perspective, one can resort to electronic structure calculations to understand how the direction and strength of OEEFs affect the properties of electronic systems. However, for multi-reference (MR) systems, calculations employing the popular Kohn-Sham density functional theory with the traditional semilocal and hybrid exchange-correlation energy functionals can yield erroneous results. Owing to its decent compromise between acc

Cardiac Arrest and Complete Heart Block: Complications after Electrical Cardioversion for Unstable Supraventricular Tachycardia in the Emergency Department.

Synchronous electrical cardioversion is a relatively common procedure in the emergency department (ED), often performed for unstable supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) or unstable ventricular tachycardia (VT). However, it is also used for stable cases resistant to drug therapy, which carries a risk of deterioration. In addition to the inherent risks linked with procedural sedation, there is a possibility of malignant arrhythmias or bradycardia, which could potentially result in cardiac arrest following this procedure. Here, we present a case of complete heart block unresponsive to transcutaneo

A novel ventriculoperitoneal shunt flow sensor based on electrically induced spatial variation in cerebrospinal fluid charge density.

Introduction: Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts divert cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) out of cerebral ventricles in patients with hydrocephalus or elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Despite high failure rates, there exist limited clinically viable solutions for long-term and continuous outpatient monitoring of CSF flow rate through VP shunts. We present a novel, low-power method for sensing analog CSF flow rate through a VP shunt premised on induced spatial electrical charge variation. Methods: Two geometric variants of the proposed sensing mechanism were prototyped: linear wire (P1) and cylindri

Electrical Responsive Coating with a Multilayered TiO2-SnO2-RuO2 Heterostructure on Ti for Controlling Antibacterial Ability and Improving Osseointegration.

The bacterial infection and poor osseointegration of Ti implants could significantly compromise their applications in bone repair and replacement. Based on the carrier separation ability of the heterojunction and the redox reaction of pseudocapacitive metal oxides, we report an electrically responsive TiO2-SnO2-RuO2 coating with a multilayered heterostructure on a Ti implant. Owing to the band gap structure of the TiO2-SnO2-RuO2 coating, electron carriers are easily enriched at the coating surface, enabling a response to the endogenous electrical stimulation of the bone. With the formation of

Electrical stimulation induced self-related auditory hallucinations correlate with oscillatory power change in the default mode network.

Self-related information is crucial in our daily lives, which has led to the proposal that there is a specific brain mechanism for processing it. Neuroimaging studies have consistently demonstrated that the default mode network (DMN) is strongly associated with the representation and processing of self-related information. However, the precise relationship between DMN activity and self-related information, particularly in terms of neural oscillations, remains largely unknown. We electrically stimulated the superior temporal and fusiform areas, using stereo-electroencephalography to investigate
