[Hyperinsulinemia, insulin-like growth factor-I, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-1, and sex-hormone binding-globulin in prepubertal and pubertal girls with premature adrenarche].

Precocious adrenarche is defined as the development of pubic hair before the age of 8 years in girls and 9 years in boys. Pubarche caused premature adrenarche in girls has been considered as a normal variant of pubertal development for years. Recently, it is cleared that premature pubarche can be considered as a marker of increased risk for endocrine and metabolic abnormalities. Precocious adrenarche in affected girls is associated with hyperinsulinaemia and functional ovarian hyperandrogenism during puberty. Authors investigated serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), insulin-li

A severe infantile sialidosis: clinical, biochemical, and microscopic features.

An infant boy is described whose clinical findings include congenital ascites, hepatosplenomegaly, postnatal growth failure, dysostosis multiplex, delayed development, pericardial effusion, and the nephrotic syndrome. Death occurred before he reached 2 years of age. Evidence indicates that these abnormalities resulted from an autosomal recessive inherited deficiency of neuraminidase.

Corneal angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the present review is to describe new antilymphangiogenic treatment strategies and recent findings on strain-dependency of corneal lymphangiogenesis and the interdependency between blood and lymphatic vessel growth. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies on mice have revealed that apart from haemangiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis can also differ markedly between several mouse strains under normal and inflammatory conditions. Although haemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis are closely interconnected in their spatial-temporal patterning, recent data suggest that they can also o

Esophageal atresia and tracheo-esophageal fistula in a patient with Digeorge syndrome.

DiGeorge Syndrome (DGS) is a congenital disorder that affects the thymus, parathyroid glands, and heart and brain. Thymus involvement in DGS may vary between absence/hypoplasia of thymus to various forms of reduced T cell function. TBX1 deficiency causes a number of distinct vascular and heart defects, suggesting multiple roles in cardiovascular development, specifically, formation and growth of the pharyngeal arch arteries, growth and septation of the outflow tract of the heart, interventricular septation, and conal alignment. Here the authors describe a case of DGS presenting with severe com

Circadian influence on ethanol-related intrauterine growth retardation in mice.

Circadian influences on growth and development in response to ethanol were studied in mice. On gestational day 10, pregnant animals received a single intraperitoneal injection of ethanol with the following dose levels: 1.0, 2.5 or 4.0 g/kg at one of four circadian phases (0700, 1300, 1900 or 0100 hr). 48 hrs after injection the embryonic weight and length, protein and DNA content and placental weight and protein were determined. Ethanol-related intrauterine growth retardation were shown to be dose- and circadian phase-dependent, the greatest susceptibility being seen during the dark phase. The

Metabolic and inflammatory status in prepuberty and early adulthood for individuals with a history of extrauterine growth restriction: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal growth and nutrition have been shown to be determinants in the programming of different tissues, such as adipose tissue, predisposing individuals to metabolic alterations later in life. Previous studies have documented an increased risk of metabolic disturbances and low-grade inflammation in prepubertal children with a history of extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR). The aim of this study was to evaluate possible alterations resulting from impaired growth during early childhood and their impact on young adult health. METHODS: This is a longitudinal, descriptive and ana

Model-driven experimental evaluation of struvite nucleation, growth and aggregation kinetics.

Nutrient stewardship is emerging as an issue of global importance, which will drive the development of nutrient recovery in the near to medium future. This will impact wastewater treatment practices, environmental protection, sustainable agriculture and global food security. A modelling framework for precipitation-based nutrient recovery systems has been developed, incorporating non-ideal solution thermodynamics, a dynamic mass balance and a dynamic population balance to track the development of the precipitating particles. The mechanisms of crystal nucleation and growth and, importantly, aggr

A novel mutation of LHX3 is associated with combined pituitary hormone deficiency including ACTH deficiency, sensorineural hearing loss, and short neck-a case report and review of the literature.

The LHX3 LIM-homeodomain transcription factor gene is required for normal pituitary and motoneuron development. LHX3 mutations are associated with growth hormone, prolactin, gonadotropin, and TSH deficiency; abnormal pituitary morphology; and may be accompanied with limited neck rotation and sensorineural hearing loss. We report on a boy, who presented with hypoglycemia in the newborn period. He is the second child of healthy unrelated parents. Short neck, growth hormone deficiency, and central hypothyroidism were diagnosed at a general pediatric hospital. Growth hormone and levothyroxine trea

Follicle dynamics and anovulation in polycystic ovary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the commonest cause of anovulatory infertility and menstrual cycle abnormalities, but the factors responsible for failure to select a dominant follicle remain unclear. METHOD: Source is authors' own studies and search of the relevant literature. RESULTS: Arrest of antral follicle growth is associated with an abnormal endocrine environment involving hypersecretion of luteinizing hormone and insulin (and perhaps hyperandrogenism). The net effect is secondary suppression of FSH, which leads to inhibition of maturation of otherwise healthy follicle

Failure of puberty and linear growth in beta-thalassemia major.

Thalassemia major is a severe progressive hemolytic anemia and a serious medical problem worldwide. Endocrine dysfunctions are well described in patients with thalassemia major. Data for endocrine complications from developing countries are scant. Endocrine complications in developing countries may be frequent due to suboptimal iron chelation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of delayed puberty and growth failure in patients with beta-thalassemia major. We evaluated the growth and sexual development of 146 patients with thalassemia major aged 10-22 years. The following data

A second look at the stomach - a fishy perspective.

Despite the established evolutionary importance of stomach acidification in vertebrates, the exact contribution of this process to overall protein digestion, nutrient absorption, growth, energy metabolism and development has not been fully elucidated and is oftentimes subject to extensive scientific debate. This Commentary sets out to frame the current state of our understanding, highlighting unresolved issues and proposing where experimental approaches can be applied to address these questions. Furthermore, we explore in depth the tantalizing evolutionary and physiological puzzle of repeated

Analysis of Postnatal Mutant Phenotypes in Mice.

Viable homozygous mutant newborn mice may show effects of a mutation at any time during their development by exhibiting abnormal structure, function, or lethality. This overview guides the analysis of postnatal mice through gross anatomical assessment and the detection of visible phenotypes prior to weaning such as altered growth patterns, neurological problems, or abnormalities in movement or coordination. Advice on marking pups for identification purposes and providing adequate nutrition in the event of eating problems is given. After weaning and at the onset of puberty, different phenotypes

Short stature and pubertal delay in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are shorter than their healthy peers. The introduction of corticosteroid (CS) has beneficial effects on muscle function but slows growth further and is associated with pubertal delay. In contrast to CS usage in most children and adolescents, weaning glucocorticoid is not a key objective of management in DMD. As the outlook for these young people improves, one of the main challenges is to reduce or offset the detrimental effects of CS on growth and development. This is a review of the aetiology and prevalence of short stature and delayed puberty i

Reduced body growth and excessive incisor length in insertional mutants mapping to mouse Chromosome 13.

Phenotypic and molecular genetic examinations of a transgenic mouse line showing developmental defects caused by a recessive insertional mutation were carried out. The mutant phenotype is characterized by general retardation of postnatal body growth and by the appearance of increased incisor length in the upper and lower jaw. The mutation causing the aberrant phenotype was mapped to Chromosome 13, 40 cM. Examination of the expression of the candidate genes did not show any alterations. This mutant mouse line provides a reproducible model for the identification and examination of gene(s) involv

Heterogeneity in establishment of polyethylene glycol-mediated plasmid transformations for five forest pathogenic Phytophthora species.

Plasmid-mediated DNA transformation is a foundational molecular technique and the basis for most CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing systems. While plasmid transformations are well established for many agricultural Phytophthora pathogens, development of this technique in forest Phytophthoras is lacking. Given our long-term research objective to develop CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing in a forest pathogenic Phytophthora species, we sought to establish the functionality of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated plasmid transformation in five species: P. cactorum, P. cinnamomi, P. cryptogea, P. ramorum, and P. syringa

[Characteristics of neuromuscular scoliosis].

Usually, neuromuscular scolioses become clinically symptomatic relatively early and are rapidly progressive even after the end of growth. Without sufficient treatment they lead to a severe reduction of quality of life, to a loss of the ability of walking, standing or sitting as well as to an impairment of the cardiopulmonary system resulting in an increased mortality. Therefore, an intensive interdisciplinary treatment by physio- and ergotherapists, internists, pediatricians, orthotists, and orthopedists is indispensable. In contrast to idiopathic scoliosis the treatment of patients with neuro

Antimalarial effect of cell penetrating peptides derived from the junctional region of Plasmodium falciparum dihydrofolate reductase-thymidylate synthase.

Dihydrofolate reductase-thymidylate synthase of Plasmodium falciparum (PfDHFR-TS) is an important target of antifolate antimalarial drugs. However, drug resistant parasites are widespread in malaria endemic regions. The unique bifunctional property of PfDHFR-TS could be exploited for the design of allosteric inhibitors that interfere with the active dimer conformation. In this study, peptides were derived from the junctional region (JR) of PfDHFR-TS amino acid sequence in the αj1 helix (JR-helix) and the DHFR domain that is necessary for interaction with αj1 helix (JR21). Five peptides were sy
