Identifying prenatal risk factors of postpartum depression with machine learning.

Postpartum depression (PPD), a common mental illness among mothers, can affect the well-being of both mothers and their children. Early intervention is essential but hindered by difficulties in identifying at-risk women, as it remains unclear how soon PPD can be predicted and which prenatal risk factors are most informative at each stage of pregnancy. We applied machine learning algorithms to (1) determine how early PPD can be predicted and (2) identify trimester-specific risk factors. The analysis leveraged data from 2865 mothers enrolled in the Brabant Study (Netherlands), including 233 psyc

Developing an Adult Living Donor Liver Transplant Program in Western Europe: The Rotterdam Experience.

Liver transplantation (LT) is curative for end stage liver disease. Expanding LT indications with limited deceased donor grafts has created organ shortages. Living donor liver transplant (LDLT) increases available organs. In 2019, we restarted our adult LDLT program. We describe our steps to create a successful LDLT program, and our outcomes. Critical steps of program development included market analysis, creation of protocols based on best care practices and a rigorous education program. Patients and donors were then actively recruited for LDLT. Outcomes were measured as morbidity (≥3 on the

Using simulated patient methodology to assess sick day guidance in community pharmacy: The case of an elderly patient with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Certain high-risk medication, such as diuretics, should be temporarily adjusted during sick days (diarrhoea, vomiting or fever) to reduce the risk of adverse drug events. Guidelines refer to this as 'sick day guidance'. Prior research has shown limited awareness among pharmacy staff of these recommendations. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed how community pharmacies in the Netherlands address a simulated self-care inquiry related to diarrhoea from a 71-year-old patient with diabetes. METHODS: Three trained simulated informal caregivers visited community pharmacies unannounced to see

Change in Age profile of Respiratory Syncytial Virus disease over the course of annual epidemics: a multi-national study.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to study whether the percentwise age distribution of RSV cases changes over time during annual epidemics. METHODS: We used surveillance data (2008-2019) from the Netherlands, Lyon (France), Portugal, Singapore, Ecuador, South Africa, and New Zealand. In each country, every season was divided into "epidemic quarters", i.e. periods corresponding to each quartile of RSV cases. Multinomial logistic regression models were fitted to evaluate whether the likelihood of RSV cases being aged <1 or ≥5 years (vs. 1 to <5) changed over time within a season. RESULTS: In all countries,

An open-label pilot study of losmapimod to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and changes in biomarker and clinical outcome assessments in participants with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy type 1.

INTRODUCTION: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a genetic disease caused by aberrant DUX4 expression, leading to progressive muscle weakness. No effective pharmaceutical treatment is available. Losmapimod, a small molecule selective inhibitor of p38 α/β MAPK, showed promising results in a phase 1 trial for the treatment of FSHD, prompting additional studies. We report the findings of an open-label phase 2 trial (NCT04004000) investigating the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and exploratory efficacy of losmapimod in participants with FSHD1. METHODS: Thi

Isolation and Genomic Characteristics of a Novel Pathogenicity Type I Feline Coronavirus in Mainland China.

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is an enveloped, positive-sense RNA virus, which is widespread among feline populations, and can cause a fatal serious disease called feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). According to the differences of antigen and genetic composition, FCoV consists of two genotypes, FCoV I and FCoV II. In this study, we have isolated and identified a FCoV I strain named HL2019. Based on the complete genome of HL2019, phylogenetic analysis showed that HL2019 strain formed in the cluster FCoV I which is more closed to human coronavirus 229E (HCoV 229E) and HCoV NL63, while the FCoV I s

Longitudinal plasma proteomics reveals biomarkers of alveolar-capillary barrier disruption in critically ill COVID-19 patients.

The pathobiology of respiratory failure in COVID-19 consists of a complex interplay between viral cytopathic effects and a dysregulated host immune response. In critically ill patients, imatinib treatment demonstrated potential for reducing invasive ventilation duration and mortality. Here, we perform longitudinal profiling of 6385 plasma proteins in 318 hospitalised patients to investigate the biological processes involved in critical COVID-19, and assess the effects of imatinib treatment. Nine proteins measured at hospital admission accurately predict critical illness development. Next to dy

Regression calibration of self-reported mobile phone use to optimize quantitative risk estimation in the COSMOS study.

The Cohort Study of Mobile Phone Use and Health (COSMOS) has repeatedly collected self-reported and operator-recorded data on mobile phone use. Assessing health effects using self-reported information is prone to measurement error, but operator data were available prospectively for only part of the study population and did not cover past mobile phone use. To optimize the available data and reduce bias, we evaluated different statistical approaches for constructing mobile phone exposure histories within COSMOS. We evaluated and compared the performance of 4 regression calibration (RC) methods (

Childhood obesity's influence on socioeconomic disparities in young adolescents' mental health.

PURPOSE: We investigated whether socioeconomic inequalities in young adolescents' mental health are partially due to the unequal distribution of childhood obesity across socioeconomic positions (SEP), i.e. differential exposure, or due to the effect of obesity on mental health being more detrimental among certain SEPs, i.e. differential impact. METHODS: We studied 4660 participants of the Generation R study, a population-based study in the Netherlands. SEP was estimated by mother's education and household income at age five of the child. We estimated the contribution of the mediating and mode

Iron deficiency, anemia, and patient-reported outcomes in kidney transplant recipients.

Kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) experience more fatigue, anxiety, and depressive symptoms and lower concentration and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared with the general population. Anemia is a potential cause that is well-recognized and treated. Iron deficiency, however, is often unrecognized, despite its potential detrimental effects related to and unrelated to anemia. We investigated the interplay of anemia, iron deficiency, and patient-reported outcomes in 814 outpatient KTRs (62% male, age 56 ± 13 years) enrolled in the TransplantLines Biobank and Cohort Study (Groningen,
