A case refort of Sandhoff disease.

Sandhoff disease is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disease presenting bilateral optic atrophy and a cherry red spot in the macula. This case report presents the characteristics of a patient with Sandhoff disease as assessed by ophthalmic, neuroimaging, and laboratory procedures. Ophthalmologic examination revealed that the patient could not fixate her eyes on objects nor follow moving targets. A pale optic disc and a cherry red spot in the macula were seen in both eyes. Low signal intensity at the thalamus and high signal intensity at the cerebral white matter were noted in a T2-weighted

[Incongruous homonymous quadrantanopia due to suprasellar calcificated lesions].

A 53 year-old woman with a history of tuberculous meningitis at 3 years of age incidentally found a right incongruous homonymous quadrantanopia in ophthalmologic check-up. On magnetic resonance imaging and helical computed tomography, the left optic tract was obscured by suprasellar calcified lesions. The left internal carotid artery was diffusely narrowed and occluded at its terminal portion as demonstrated by cerebral angiography. The calcificated lesions were diagnosed to derive from old tuberculous meningitis on the basis of her history, their location and the association of vascular occlu

MRI of Wolfram syndrome (DIDMOAD).

Wolfram syndrome (DIDMOAD) is a rare diffuse neurodegenerative disorder characterised by diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, deafness, and a wide variety of abnormalities of the central nervous system, urinary tract and endocrine glands. It may be familial or sporadic. Reported features on MRI of the brain are absence of the physiological high signal of the posterior lobe of the pituitary, shrinkage of optic nerves, chiasm and tracts, atrophy of the hypothalamic region, brain stem, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex. We report a 12-year-old girl with a 5-year history without bra

Effect of pulse shape on the efficiency of multiphoton processes: implications for biological microscopy.

The effects of spectral shape on two photon fluorescence excitation are investigated experimentally using an acousto-optic pulse shaper to modify femtosecond pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser. By using different spectral window shapes, we find that the measured two photon efficiency can vary by a factor of 2 for differently shaped spectra with the same full width at half maximum. We find that these effects are described well by a simple model assuming transform-limited pulses. The fact that even small changes in the spectral wings can significantly affect the efficiency of nonlinear processes ha

Follow-up studies on pattern reversal visually evoked cortical potentials in a 2-year-old child with optic neuritis.

A 2-year and 7-month-old boy had sudden visual loss in both eyes and showed bilateral optic neuritis without systemic symptoms. Steroid therapy improved his visual acuity from 0.077 and 0.053 to 1.0 at 7 months after onset. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed high density in both optic nerves and multiple lesions in the white matter that were enhanced by gadolinium. We considered the diagnosis of demyelinating disease. Follow-up MRI showed no abnormal lesion. Both transient and steady-state pattern visually evoked cortical potentials were nondetectable at the onset, and the P1

Computation of different optical variables of looming objects in pigeon nucleus rotundus neurons.

Three types of looming-selective neurons have been found in the nucleus rotundus of pigeons, each computing a different optical variable related to image expansion of objects approaching on a direct collision course with the bird. None of these neurons respond to simulated approach toward stationary objects. A detailed analysis of these neurons' firing pattern to approaching objects of different sizes and velocities shows that one group of neurons signals relative rate of expansion tau (tau), a second group signals absolute rate of expansion rho (rho), and a third group signals yet another opt

Herniation of the third ventricle into empty sella caused by surgery for pituitary apoplexy--case report.

A 46-year-old male presented with acute visual loss in the right eye, high fever, nausea, and vomiting. This was caused by herniation of the third ventricle into empty sella at 15 months of surgery for pituitary apoplexy. The sellar-suprasellar tumor was totally removed via a transcranial approach. Histological examination showed chromophobe adenoma with necrotic tissue, indicating pituitary apoplexy. His visual field defect worsened 15 months after the operation, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed moderate hydrocephalus and protrusion of the dilated anterior inferior portion of the third

The reproducibility of computerized boundary analysis for measuring optic disc pallor in the normal optic disc.

The optic discs of eight normal subjects were photographed on three separate visits under widely varying conditions. Each photograph was scanned by a television camera, converted to digital form, and then analyzed using computer image analysis techniques. The computer was programmed to delineate the boundary around the optic disc and the area of pallor. The percentage of disc pallor was then computed across the entire disc and for each disc quadrant. The reproducibility of the procedure was determined by evaluating several photographic parameters: camera flash intensity, film type, magnificati

Optic aphasia, optic apraxia, and loss of dreaming.

A 47-year-old man with a left temporo-occipital infarct in the area of the posterior cerebral artery is presented. The neuropsychological examination did not reveal aphasia or gross mental deficits. The patient presented with alexia without agraphia, color agnosia, but few visual perceptual deficits. The main impairment was in confrontation naming; he was incapable of naming objects and pictures, not from lack of recognition (excluding visual agnosia) but from lack of access to the appropriate word (optic aphasia). The patient also exhibited a deficit in the evocation of gesture from the visua

Coronary Calcification and Plaque Vulnerability: An Optical Coherence Tomographic Study.

BACKGROUND: Spotty superficial calcium deposits have been implicated in plaque vulnerability based on previous intravascular imaging studies. Biomechanical models suggest that microcalcifications between 5 and 65 µm in diameter can intensify fibrous cap stress, promoting plaque rupture. However, the 100- to 200-µm resolution of intravascular ultrasound limits its ability to discriminate single calcium deposits from clusters of smaller deposits, and a previous optical coherence tomographic investigation evaluated calcifications within a long segment of artery, which may not truly reflect the me

Histology correlated adaptive optics polarisation sensitive optical coherence tomography.

Adaptive optics polarisation sensitive optical coherence tomography (AO-PS-OCT) provides high-resolution and tissue-specific contrast for the study of retinal pathology. We used our recently developed AO-PS-OCT system to acquire longitudinal in-vivo images of laser injury in the mouse retina over a ten-day period. Hyper-reflective foci (HRF) were observed in both reflectance and PS-OCT modalities. Spatial registration with immunohistochemistry showed co-localisation of HRF in our PS-OCT modality with IB4-positive myeloid cells and probable pigment in the confocal transmission channel, suggesti

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease presenting as isolated simultaneous bilateral optic neuritis in a child.

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is the most recently defined distinct demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system which has heterogeneous clinical manifestations. Here, we present the case of isolated bilateral optic neuritis (ON) in an 11-year-old female who presented with bilateral acute and progressive loss of vision with pain on ocular movement over the past 2 days following mild fever. Neuroimaging revealed the features suggestive of isolated ON more in favor of MOGAD. Spine imaging was within the normal limits. She was seronegative for aqu

Bilateral Giant Choroidal Cavern in a Case of Rod-Cone Dystrophy: A Rare Presentation.

This report presents a case of a 22-year-old woman with bilateral giant choroidal caverns (CCs) in rod-cone dystrophy. Her best-corrected visual acuity was 20/80 in the right eye and 20/50 in the left eye. Fundus examination showed optic nerve pallor, narrowed blood vessels, and diffuse pigmentary changes. Fundus autofluorescence showed a central area of reduced autofluorescence surrounded by stippled autofluorescence. An electroretinogram showed decreased amplitude of both scotopic and photopic waves, consistent with a diagnosis of rod-cone dystrophy (retinitis pigmentosa). Optical coherence
