Integrating data from legacy systems using object linking and embedding technology: development of a reporting system for heavy metal poisoning results.

Integrating data that reside in different systems remains an often laborious process, requiring either manual steps or complicated programming. This paper describes a method for state-mandated reporting of childhood blood lead testing results that makes use of object linking and embedding technology and readily available software products to pull together information from different legacy systems. A terminal session emulator employs object linking and embedding automation to extract host data, and Visual Basic routines specify the user interface and database manipulation. This system has signi

Changing trends in acute poisoning in Chandigarh zone: a 25-year autopsy experience from a tertiary care hospital in northern India.

A 25-year autopsy study (1972-1997) of acute poisoning deaths from a tertiary care hospital in northern India (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh) revealed a steep increase in the incidence of acute poisoning since 1987. The majority (68%) of subjects were between the ages of 14 and 30 years, and there was a male preponderance (69%). The main victims were students and unemployed youths, followed by agricultural workers and domestic workers. The proportion of urban victims increased from 45% in the period from 1972 to 1977 to 72% in the period from 1992 to 1997

Electron spin resonance spin-trapping investigation into the effects of paraquat and desferrioxamine on hydroxyl radical generation during acute iron poisoning.

We have previously described a secondary radical-trapping technique for the detection of in vivo hydroxyl radical generation during acute iron overload. With this technique, the hydroxyl radical (.OH) reacts with dimethylsulfoxide to form the methyl radical (.CH3), which is then detected by ESR spectroscopy as its adduct with the spin trap phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone in the bile of treated animals. In this study, we report both the individual and combined effects of the futile-cycling agent paraquat (PQ2+) and the iron-chelating agent desferrioxamine (DFO) on iron-dependent .OH generation. Following the power: social-class inequities in mortality from accidental poisonings, suicide, and chronic liver disease in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Hazardous working conditions fuel inequities in accidental-poisoning, suicide, and chronic-liver-disease mortality. Relational theories suggest such hazards flow from power imbalances between workers, managers, and employers - social classes demarcated by power over property and labor. However, to our knowledge, no US studies using relational measures have analyzed class inequities in the cause-specific mortality. METHODS: We used the Mortality Disparities in American Communities dataset, which links the 2008 American Community Survey to the National Death Index through December

Intoxication with nutmeg: A case presentation and analysis of Swiss poisons information center (Tox Info Suisse) enquiries 2014-2023.

INTRODUCTION: Nutmeg is a widely used culinary spice. When ingested in large quantities it has psychoactive and hallucinogenic effects. CASE REPORTS: We present the case of a 23-year-old man on long-term fluoxetine and quetiapine who ingested 75 g of nutmeg with suicidal intent. Four hours later, he presented himself to the emergency department of the nearest hospital with tachycardia and mydriasis. He was transferred to the intensive care unit of Cantonal Hospital Baselland for further monitoring where, approximately 14 h after ingestion, he became somnolent. All symptoms resolved spontaneou

Crystal and Cryo-EM structure of PPL, a novel hexameric R-type lectin from the poisonous mushroom Pleurocybella porrigens.

Pleurocybella porrigens is a mushroom that grows widely around the temperate northern hemisphere, and was once considered edible, especially in Japan. Following a number of deaths in 2004, investigations revealed the presence of various toxins, including a lectin (PPL) that apparently survives cooking and enters the bloodstream via the stomach. We have cloned PPL and solved its structure by X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM. We report the sugar binding properties of this β-trefoil lectin, which has a novel hexameric structure.

Characterization and comparison of respiratory toxicity induced by sublethal poisoning to two organophosphorus compounds: A pesticide and a sarin structural analog in mice.

The chemical risk associated with the use of organophosphorus nerve agents remains a major concern, as highlighted by recent international events (e.g., Syrian conflict, Novichok poisoning incidents) and the tense geopolitical climate. Concurrently, the use of organophosphorus pesticides continues to represent a major global public health challenge, resulting in numerous poisonings and fatalities each year. Organophosphorus compounds exert their toxic effects by irreversibly inhibiting cholinesterase enzymes, disrupting cholinergic signaling within the affected organism. This disruption impair
