Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare X-linked dominant disorder characterized by highly variable abnormalities of the skin, eyes and central nervous system. A mutation of the nuclear factor-κB essential modulator (NEMO) located at Xq28 is believed to play a role in pathogenesis and the mutation occurs mostly in female patients due to fatal consequence of the mutation in males in utero. This study was designed to identify the common NEMO rearrangement in four Korean patients with IP. Deletion of exons 4 to 10 in the NEMO, the most common mutation in IP patients, was detected in all of the pati

Brucellosis is a multisystem disease with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations; hematological abnormalities ranging from fulminant as of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) to anaemia, leucopoenia, thrombocytopenia, and clotting disorders. In this report, we present DIC in a case of brucellosis because of rare presentation. A 3-year-old boy was admitted with the complaints of continuous fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, and bruise on leg. He looked pale and his physical examination revealed purpuric skin lesions on both legs. A mild hepatosplenomegaly was noted on palpation. Lab

Psoriasis is well-known immune-mediated skin disease often associated with co-morbidities, including dyslipidaemia and obesity. Few reports imply that the disease might be also related to pathology of mucosal surfaces, especially that of the digestive system. The authors present a case of psoriasis and concurrent digestive system abnormalities, and review the literature regarding the topic. A 40-year-old man suffered from an exacerbation of exudative psoriasis for about 6 months. Topical antipsoriatics proved ineffective and the disease gradually progressed to a severe disseminated form. Subse

Endogenous ochronosis or alkaptonuria is a rare, autosomal recessive disease of tyrosine metabolism that is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme homogentisic acid oxidase. The disease results in the accumulation and deposition of homogentisic acid in the cartilage, eyelids, forehead, cheeks, axillae, genital region, buccal mucosa, larynx, tympanic membranes, and tendons. The disease generally presents in adults with arthritis and skin abnormalities; occasionally, involvement of other organs may be seen. A 49-year-old man was referred to our clinic with verrucous lesions on his hands. On physic

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is one of the most common genetic disorders. Inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, this phacomatosis is classified into two genetically distinct subtypes characterized by multiple cutaneous lesions and tumors of the peripheral and central nervous system. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), also referred to as Recklinghausen's disease, affects about 1 in 3500 individuals and presents with a variety of characteristic abnormalities of the skin and the peripheral nervous system. Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), previously termed central neurofibromatosis, is much more rare

BACKGROUND: X-linked dominant chondrodysplasia punctata, also known as Conradi-Hünermann-Happle syndrome or CDPX2, is a rare type of genodermatosis with heterogeneous clinical phenotypes. It is characterized by the association of usually bilateral and symmetrical Blaschko-linear cutaneous lesions, ocular involvement, morphological, and skeletal abnormalities (characteristic punctuate epiphyseal calcifications).
CASE REPORT: A female newborn was examined for a squamous glazed erythema mainly located on the left half of the body. Standard X-rays of the left wrist showed punctuate epiphyseal cal

Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a rare inherited condition, first described in 1960 as Zinsser-Engmann-Cole syndrome. The condition presents with a classic triad: nail dystrophy, reticulate skin pigmentation over the trunk and neck, and white plaques typically in the oral cavity. White plaques may also affect, although less frequently, the mucosal surfaces of the urethra and vagina. Variable somatic abnormalities may be present; these include: pulmonary, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, cerebral, and dental complications. Pancytopenia eventually develops, progressing to bone marrow failure; the

Fetal midgut volvulus is quite rare, and most cases are associated with abnormalities of intestinal rotation or fixation. We report a case of midgut volvulus without malrotation, associated with a meconium pellet, during the gestation period. This 2.79 kg, 33-wk infant was born via a spontaneous vaginal delivery caused by preterm labor. Prenatal ultrasound showed dilated bowel loops with the appearance of a 'coffee bean sign'. This patient had an unusual presentation with a distended abdomen showing skin discoloration. An emergency laparotomy revealed a midgut volvulus and a twisted small bowe

Keratitis ichthyosis deafness syndrome is a rare congenital ectodermal disorder. It appears to be genetically heterogeneous and may be caused by mutations in the connexin 26 (Cx26) gene (GJB2) or in the connexin 30 gene. It is characterized by the association of ichthyosis-like skin lesions, hearing loss, and vascularizing keratitis. We report the clinical and molecular findings in a 5-year-old girl with keratitis ichthyosis deafness syndrome. DNA sequencing in our patient revealed a p.Ser17Phe mutation in GJB2. Besides the typical clinical features of keratitis ichthyosis deafness syndrome, a

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of tuberculosis (TB) of the knee joint.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MRI features in 15 patients with TB of the knee, as confirmed by histology of the biopsied joint synovium, were reviewed retrospectively. The images were assessed for intra-articular and peri-articular abnormalities.
RESULTS: All patients had florid synovial proliferation. The proliferating synovium showed intermediate to low T2 signal intensity. In the patients who were administered intravenous contrast, the hypertrophic syno

Although information in the literature is scant, pediatric patients in long-term care are known to be at risk for pressure ulcers. Modifying adult guidelines and standards for well children has helped guide provision of care in the authors' pediatric long-term care and rehabilitation facility. In addition to standard comprehensive clinical and nutritional assessment protocols, patient growth and a history of prematurity, as well as the effect of chromosomal and neurological abnormalities, must be considered. Optimal protein intake is of particular concern in this population. Experience, along

A 16-year-old girl was seriously stung on her abdomen by a jellyfish as she jumped on her small surfboard. She and her mother identified the animal from photographs as Chrysaora fuscescens. Within several minutes the girl developed a massive abdominal cutaneous eruption composed of hundreds of punctuate erythematous papules and macules, which persisted for 5 to 7 days. Persistent urinary incontinence and biliary dyskinesia appeared over the following night. It is theorized that a systemic uptake of venom occurred percutaneously after contact of the jellyfish tentacles with her abdominal skin.

Transient neonatal leukemia or transient neonatal myeloproliferative disorder is commonly associated with Down syndrome. It usually resolves spontaneously in 4-5 months. However, 25 % of patients will subsequently develop acute megakaryoblastic leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome. It has seldom been described without constitutional anomalies and is even less frequent in twins. We present three phenotypically normal patients with this disorder. One of them was diagnosed because he presented blueberry muffin syndrome. Diagnosis was guided by pathological examination of the skin lesions. The oth

Latex allergy has become an increasing cause of morbility in the last few years and is now recognized as an international health problem. The prevalence of latex sensitization among the general population is less than 1 %. The groups at highest risk include healthcare workers, rubber industry workers, patients with a history of multiple surgical procedures, particularly children with spina bifida and urogenital abnormalities, atopic individuals, and patients with certain fruit allergies (especially kiwi, avocado, chestnut and banana). The molecular and immunological characteristics of several

An 8-year-old girl was referred to the Genetics Centre with mild developmental delay, mild dysmorphic features, and a head circumference on the 98th centile. She was noted to have large irregular ear lobes, torticollis, and mild hemihypertrophy. Karyotype analysis of cultured peripheral lymphocytes and skin fibroblasts revealed the presence of a symmetrical supernumerary marker chromosome in 13% of cells from both tissue types. Further analysis showed that this marker chromosome originated from the distal region of chromosome 13 and contained no centromeric alpha-satellite DNA. The marker chro

Subacute motor neuropathy involving bulbar nerves is an unusual complication of hyperthyroidism. Clinical and neurophysiologic follow-up of such patients has been rarely reported. We describe a 41-year-old Colombian patient who developed respiratory failure associated with motor neuropathy and severe weight loss. The major clinical features included diffuse amyotrophy, bilateral facial paresis, and fasciculations, suggesting motor neuropathy. Electromyography confirmed the presence of axonal neuropathy, with predominant motor involvement. Goiter with hypervascularization was noticed, associate

McCune-Albright Syndrome is a rare condition characterized by endocrine abnormalities, precocious puberty, pigmented skin lesions and polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with consequent fractures and limb deformity. Patients with this syndrome might have had multiple operations on a limb and might also have extensive internal fixation in-situ. We review the case of a 41-year-old woman with McCune-Albright syndrome, who presented with a pathological fracture of her left femur below a long plate and screws. Our management of this challenging problem included the use of a retrograde femoral nail, which
