Are There Any Effective Behavior Change Strategies for Communicating Genetic Risk in Obesity Prevention and Body Weight Reduction Interventions?

This systematic review examined how differences in intervention components may contribute to inconsistent findings in genetic risk communication studies, addressing obesity-related outcomes (e.g., weight reduction, nutrition behavior, exercise). The review was preregistered (PROSPERO #CRD42024524026) and followed PRISMA guidelines. Searches across eight databases identified 23 randomized controlled trials, covering 18 intervention trials. Risk of bias was assessed using the Risk of Bias 2 tool. A narrative synthesis was used to cluster studies by the content of intervention and control groups.

CHD8 adulthood microglial knockdown in C57BL6 mice induces behavioral, morphological, and transcriptional changes in a sex-dependent manner.

Mutations in CHD8 (chromodomain-helicase-DNA binding protein 8) are highly associated with autism spectrum disorders. It has been well established that CHD8 has a prominent role in the development of neurons. However, there is little knowledge of its specific roles in microglia, and its possible roles in cellular functions after development, i.e. adulthood. In addition, while microglial dysfunction has been characterized in autism, the roles of autism-associated genes in microglial function have not been well characterized. Using conditional knockdown technology in C57BL6 mice models, we deter

Effect of gestational exposure to dim light at night on the behavior of rat dams and offspring.

Recently, dim light at night (dLAN) has become nearly ubiquitous. Whereas nighttime light exposure is associated with an increased risk of adverse health outcomes, little is known about the effects of low-intensity light exposure at night during pregnancy on offspring. We investigated the behavioral perturbations caused by prenatal exposure to dLAN at different stages of ontogeny. Rat dams were subjected to a light-dark regimen with ~ 2 lx dLAN throughout pregnancy. After parturition, the animals were exposed to a regular lighting cycle, and the dams' behavior in the homecage and the pups' dev

Sexual trauma and compulsive sexual behavior in young men and women: A network analysis involving two samples.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sexual trauma is associated with multiple negative health and social conditions, including compulsive sexual behavior. The present study examined network structures involving sexual trauma history, psychological distress (defined as depression and/or anxiety symptoms), substance use, transactional sex, and compulsive sexual behavior. Prior network analysis work in this area is limited. METHODS: We drew upon two samples of young adults (Sample 1: n = 1,884, 69.3% women; Sample 2: n = 2,337, 69.7% women) recruited from universities in the United States in 2020-2022. RESULT

Thermography as an indicator of goat welfare in an intensive production system.

This study evaluated the welfare of Saanen, Moxoto, and Anglo-Nubian goats kept in collective or individual pens for a feedlot system, evaluated with infrared thermography. A total of twenty-four goats were used, eight for each breed. Animals were distributed in a completely randomized design, with a 2 × 3 factorial with two fixed effects: housing type (collective or individual pens) and breed (Moxoto, Saanen, and Anglo-Nubian). The surface temperature was evaluated using an infrared thermographic camera, and behavioral analysis was based on the qualitative behavior assessment using a fixed li

Application of the Behavior Change Wheel Within the Context of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus Management.

PURPOSE: Although experiencing tinnitus can lead to many difficulties, these can be reduced by using techniques derived from cognitive behavioral therapy. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) has been developed to provide an accessible intervention. The aim of this study was to describe how ICBT can facilitate tinnitus management by identifying the active ingredients of the intervention from the perspective of health behavior change. METHOD: The ICBT intervention was evaluated using the Behavior Change Wheel in eight steps across the following three stages: (1) understanding the

Vocal and territorial behavior in the Smith frog (Hypsiboas faber): relationships with plasma levels of corticosterone and testosterone.

The possible trade-off between the roles of glucocorticoids as facilitators of energy substrate mobilization and neural inhibitors of sexual behavior during breeding season is under debate. We studied the relationship between calling and territorial behavior with plasma levels of corticosterone (CORT) and plasma levels of testosterone (T) across the breeding season of Hypsiboas faber, a large and territorial Neotropical treefrog. We investigated these relationships through focal observations of males calling naturally, followed by blood sampling for hormonal radioimmunoassay. We additionally u

Decision Processes about Condom Use among Shelter-Homeless LGBT Youth in Manhattan.

Health behavior interventions based on Theory of Planned Behavior address participants' personally-held beliefs, perceived social norms, and control over the behavior. New data are always needed to "member check" participants' decision processes and inform interventions. This qualitative study investigates decision processes around condom use among 81 homeless LGBT youth ages 18-26. Findings indicated considerable endorsement of the conventional policy of always using condoms, promulgated in HIV prevention education targeting this population. Although some participants reported risk behavior i

Motor and cognitive stereotypies in the BTBR T+tf/J mouse model of autism.

The BTBR T+tf/J inbred mouse strain displays a variety of persistent phenotypic alterations similar to those exhibited in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The unique genetic background of the BTBR strain is thought to underlie its lack of reciprocal social interactions, elevated repetitive self-directed grooming, and restricted exploratory behaviors. In order to clarify the existence, range, and mechanisms of abnormal repetitive behaviors within BTBR mice, we performed detailed analyses of the microstructure of self-grooming patterns and noted increased overall grooming, higher percentages of

Adolescent Cannabis Use, Comorbid Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Other Internalizing and Externalizing Disorders.

Cannabis use often co-occurs with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other internalizing and externalizing disorders. Treatment planning, including pharmacologic and psychosocial interventions, for these comorbid disorders require thorough diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of social, emotional, and behavioral impairments, severity of substance use, and motivation for change. Improved understanding of these comorbid disorders will inform treatment planning that address current symptoms and behaviors and may also prevent the development of mental health and substance use di

Object Burying Test for Assessment of Obsessive Compulsive Behaviors in Mice.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can occur in several psychiatric illnesses such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and it is more prevalent in children. This condition is characterized by repeated and apparently meaningless behaviors such as frequent hand washing, counting, tapping, and rocking. This can disrupt normal socialization and in some cases lead to self-harm. Therefore there is interest in developing more effective therapies for individuals suffering from these conditions. This chapter describes how to conduct the mouse marble burying test as a sensitive measure of compulsive beh

Conquering the Craving: Treatment to Curb Alcohol Use Disorder.

Largely underutilized in North America, the use of medications to treat alcohol dependence is frequently a successful method of reducing alcohol craving and promoting abstinence. Recovery from alcohol addiction can be a complicated process, requiring nutritional, social, psychological, spiritual, and physical aspects of healing and self-directed behavioral change. Nurses can intervene in alcohol use disorder via screening, referrals, support of medical and behavioral treatments, and spiritual care that emphasizes hope, forgiveness, and relief from shame and guilt.

Unpacking the pathways using the stress and coping theory: How social support reduces substance abuse through depression.

Substance abuse among university students is a significant public health concern that is typically linked to underlying mental health issues such as depression, stress, and a lack of social support networks. Thus, the study's goal was to investigate the link between social support, depression, and substance abuse. A cross-sectional design was used. Students were given 3 measures to complete for the current study: the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test. The study included 257 regul

"Take the Rough With the Smooth": Modesty Modulates Neurocognitive and Emotional Processing of Social Feedback.

Self-enhancement motivates individuals to prefer positive or expected social feedback over negative or unexpected feedback, thereby eliciting corresponding emotional experiences. Emotion regulation strategies that aim to reduce negative experiences and enhance positive ones often face the dilemma of prioritizing one outcome at the expense of the other. Modest individuals, characterized by the low self-focus perspective, may demonstrate advantages in managing emotional experiences derived from self-relevant social feedback. In this study, participants with high and low levels of modesty were sc

Chronic exposure to MK-801 leads to olfactory deficits and reduced neurogenesis in the olfactory bulbs of adult male mice.

BACKGROUND: MK-801 is a drug widely used in preclinical studies to model schizophrenia in animals. Its distinctive feature is the ability to mimic pathological changes in social interactions. Unlike humans, rodents rely heavily on their sense of smell for social interaction. Since, as previously demonstrated, it also impairs neurogenesis, we set out to determine whether olfactory impairment is associated with chronic administration of the drug. METHODS: The mice were divided into two groups, of which one was administered the drug for 3 weeks, and the other only once. Olfaction and social tran

Psychological maltreatment and substance use among college students: Psychological distress, belongingness, and social support.

Substance use in college students is an important public health problem associated with substantial consequences. It is a critical step to examine risk and protective factors associated with substance use to develop prevention and intervention strategies for promoting college students' healthy development and well-being. The present cross-sectional study aimed to examine the mediating role of psychological distress in the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and substance use and the moderating effect of social support and belongingness in this association among college st

Social communication in fragile X syndrome: pilot examination of the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC).

BACKGROUND: Social communication is a key area of difficulty in fragile X syndrome (FXS) and there are not yet adequate outcome measurement tools. Appropriate outcome measures for FXS have been identified as a key area of research interest in order to evaluate future therapeutic trials. The Brief Observation of Social Communication Change-Minimally Verbal (BOSCC-MV), an outcome measure with strong psychometrics developed for autism spectrum disorder, has promise as an outcome measure to assess social communication change with FXS participants. METHODS: We examined the BOSCC-MV via central cod

Digital Media, Anxiety, and Depression in Children.

There are growing concerns about the impact of digital technologies on children's emotional well-being, particularly regarding fear, anxiety, and depression. The 2 mental health categories of anxiety and depression will be discussed together because there is significant symptom overlap and comorbidity. Early research has explored the impact of traditional media (eg, television, movies) on children's acute fears, which can result in anxieties and related sleep disturbances that are difficult to remedy. More recent research deals with the interactive nature of newer media, especially social medi
