The Proteus syndrome is a rare congenital hamartomatous condition that is characterized by a wide range of malformations, sometimes involving the face. Common manifestations include partial gigantism, congenital lipomas, and plantar hyperplasia. In this report we describe the craniofacial clinicopathological development in a girl with Proteus syndrome from age 6 to 20 years. The patient had pronounced hemifacial hypertrophy, exostoses in the left parietal region, and enlargement of the inferior alveolar nerve and mandibular canal in the affected region. The dental development of the affected l

Case reports of mandibular molars with iatrogenic perforations are presented. Such perforations have been treated with internal amalgam repair or by surgical intervention. However, the potential exists for tissue migration and pocket formation. The use of guided tissue regeneration as a barrier for apical migration is beneficial in surgical treatment of perforations. Follow-up examination of perforated teeth treated with resorbable barriers showed successful repair. Results obtained with this technique offer the possibility of a successful repair for an otherwise hopeless complication of endod

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease of the joints with the involvement of other systems. Previous studies have demonstrated its association with chronic periodontitis (CP), a chronic inflammatory disease of tooth-supporting tissues. Positive rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA) in RA patients have been found to be associated with CP. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of CP in RA patients, and to investigate the association of ACPA, RF status and RA disease activity with CP and non-CP RA patient

OBJECTIVES: Periodontal disease has been associated with higher circulating levels of inflammatory markers and conditions associated with chronic inflammation, including vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. Limited data exist on the relationship between periodontal disease and gastric and duodenal ulcer.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 49,120 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, aged 40-75 years at enrollment in 1986. Biennially, we assessed periodontal disease, tooth loss, and other risk factors for gastric and duodenal ulcer. We validated diagnose

Disease can alter natural ramp-like elastic gradients to steeper step-like profiles at soft-hard tissue interfaces. Prolonged function can further mediate mechanochemical events that alter biomechanical response within diseased organs. In this study, a human bone-tooth fibrous joint was chosen as a model system, in which the effects of bacterial-induced disease, i.e. periodontitis, on natural elastic gradients were investigated. Specifically, the effects of ectopic biomineral, i.e. calculus, on innate chemical and elastic gradients within the cementum-dentin complex, both of which are fundamen

BACKGROUND: Tannerella forsythia (Tf) is a Gram-negative anaerobe implicated in the development of periodontal disease. Bacterial surface protein A (BspA) is a surface-expressed and -secreted protein that is recognized as an important virulence factor of Tf. This study was undertaken to determine whether Tf BspA induces an antibody response in periodontal disease. We hypothesized that serum immunoglobulin (Ig)G antibody levels against BspA correlate with the disease of patients.
METHODS: Sera were obtained from 100 patients with cardiac disorders and periodontal disease and 73 patients who ex

Patients who require dental emergency care for pain or trauma may not be able to see a dental practitioner for treatment. The patients often seek care in alternative medical facilities when the symptoms are too severe to be managed by over-the-counter medications. Nurses, physicians, and allied medical staff may be required to triage these patients and provide palliative treatment until the patient is able to seek definitive dental treatment. By using criteria to assess the etiology of the dental pain and implementing possible alternative treatments, these patients can receive palliative care

Eight female and 3 male patients from a group of 30 patients studied 10 years earlier and who had received no periodontal treatment during this period, in order to evaluate the progression of untreated periodontal disease in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, were evaluated in terms of plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, probing depth, and alveolar bone loss. The total number of dental surfaces that presented clinically detectable plaque deposits increased significantly (29% to 43%; P < 0.01; chi 2 = 46.36). Site-specific comparisons for plaque index between studies sho

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) can effectively prevent and control dental caries, the world's most pervasive noncommunicable disease. This study estimated the transition probabilities for caries in children receiving SDF. The CariedAway study was a community-based cluster-randomized trial of SDF, glass ionomer sealants, and atraumatic restorations conducted in 48 primary schools enrolling predominately low-income minority children in New York, USA. For enrolled children receiving SDF, probabilities were computed for transitions between healthy (sound), diseased (carious), and disease-controlled

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) represents a serious health condition, impacting the lives of many patients worldwide. The condition challenges clinical care due to its complex etiology and limited therapeutic options. A thorough understanding of the pathophysiological and patient-related factors that promote disease development is essential. Recently, the oral microbiome has been implicated as a potential driver and modulating factor of BRONJ by several studies. Modern genomic sequencing methods have provided a wealth of data on the microbial composition of BRONJ lesio

BACKGROUND: NOTCH2NLC GGC repeat expansions have been associated with various neurogenerative disorders, including neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease and inherited peripheral neuropathies (IPNs). However, only a few NOTCH2NLC-related disease studies in IPN have been reported, and the clinical and genetic spectra remain unclear. Thus, this study aimed to describe the clinical and genetic manifestations of NOTCH2NLC-related IPNs.
METHOD: Among 2692 Japanese patients clinically diagnosed with IPN/Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), we analysed NOTCH2NLC repeat expansion in 1783 unrelated pat

OBJECTIVES: To establish the prevalence and severity of external cervical resorption (ECR) in posterior teeth observed in bitewing (BW) radiographs in an epidemiological study of a 17-year-old patient population from community dentistry. Furthermore, to assess the potential predisposing factors for ECR.
METHODS: Posterior BWs from 5596 patients (2717 females, 2879 males; mean age 17.8 years) were assessed by three observers in order to detect ECR (using Heithersay's classification system, severity classes 1-4). When ECR was suspected, cone beam CT (CBCT) was offered to verify diagnosis. Preva

Trichomonas tenax, an oral flagellated protozoon found in humans, potentially associated with the inflammation of periodontal tissues and decreased immunity that causes the tissue damage and tooth loss from chronic infection. Currently, there is a lack of data regarding the prevalence of T. tenax infection in Thailand. Therefore, this study aimed to measure prevalence of T. tenax in periodontal disease patients by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify the 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene and to determine the factors associated with the presence of this protozoan. A cross-sectional

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by microbial dental plaque which leads to the destruction and loss of supporting tissues of the tooth. Microbial plaque alone, however, is not enough to cause the disease. The body's response plays an important role, in which an imbalance between the pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory effects of cytokines leads to an inflammatory reaction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We detected changes in mRNA expression and protein levels of MIP-1α, and metalloproteinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) contributing to cascades in the initiation and progression

Although events such as tooth extraction and oral surgery were considered for a while the sole triggering factor for Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ), it is still unclear if trigger events may be precipitating factors that accelerate the onset of the disease that would have possibly occurred anyway. Therefore, this research aimed to retrospectively analyze MRONJ cases diagnosed in our tertiary referral hospital during the last 14 years, focusing on the onset of the disease, potential trigger events, and countermeasures to update the knowledge on their pathogenesis. An audit

BACKGROUND: Single-center clinical series provide important information on genetic distribution that can guide genetic testing. However, there are few such studies on pediatric populations with inherited peripheral neuropathies (IPNs).
METHODS: Thorough genetic testing was performed on IPN patients under 20 years of age from a geographically well-defined Mediterranean area (Valencian Community, Spain), annually assessed with the Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease Pediatric Scale (CMTPedS).
RESULTS: From 86 families with IPNs, 99 patients (59 males) were identified, 85 with sensorimotor neuropathy o

Inter-individual variability in the host response contributes significantly to expression of periodontal disease. Thus, research into the human host response is considered important in the analysis of periodontal disease. Human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2) is typically produced by epithelial tissues after stimulation with microorganisms and inflammatory mediators, and it contributes to the initial defense in the innate immune response. However, hBD-2 expression in response to infection has not been investigated in human gingival tissue with periodontitis. We examined the response to Porphyromonas ging

We examined whether colonization of selected oral pathogens is associated with gastric precancerous lesions in a cross-sectional study. A total of 119 participants were included, of which 37 were cases of chronic atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, or dysplasia. An oral examination was performed to measure periodontal indices. Plaque and saliva samples were tested with real-time quantitative PCR for DNA levels of pathogens related to periodontal disease (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythensis, Treponema denticola, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) and dental caries (Strep
