A retrospective analysis of the incidence, severity, and causes of anaphylactoid reactions (AR) in 1504 cardiosurgical patients operated on at Research Center of Surgery in 1995-1999 showed that AR occurred in 109 (7.4%) patients: 60% during aortocoronary bypass operations, 27.2% during correction of acquired heart diseases, and 12.8% during correction of congenital heart diseases. Skin symptoms predominated in the structure of AR (59.7%); cardiovascular episodes ranked second (38.5%), and the incidence of pulmonary reactions was lowest (1.8%). The causes of AR during anesthesia and surgery we

OBJECTIVES: To delineate chlamydia partner notification periods with high proportions of infected, untreated sexual partners, and to evaluate relevant Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations.
METHODS: Disease Intervention Specialists (DIS) offered contact tracing services to all chlamydia patients (N = 1,309) reported in Colorado Springs between July 1996 and June 1997. Patients were asked to identify sexual partners during the 180 days preceding treatment. Partners were actively sought by DIS and offered DNA amplification testing.
RESULTS: Of 1,309 patients, 1,109 were interviewed

As the number of youths infected with HIV rises, secondary prevention programmes are needed to help youths living with HIV meet three goals: (1) increase self-care behaviours, medical adherence and health-related interactions; (2) reduce transmission acts; and (3) enhance their quality of life. This article describes an intervention programme for youths living with HIV, delivered over 30 sessions, in three modules. Based on modifications of the social action model, perceptions, attitudes and skills to enhance affective awareness and positive behavioural routines are identified as prerequisites

RATIONALE: Telemedicine models for medical abortion are service delivery models where care is provided by a health worker using telecommunications to support the abortion process. Existing evidence suggests that telemedicine for medical abortion is safe, effective, and acceptable to women compared to when care is provided in-clinic. However, the available data are often constrained by several factors. We sought to strengthen the evidence base by comparing telemedicine models for medical abortion with medical abortion provided in-clinic.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety, success rate, and acce

BACKGROUND: Proliferative diabetic retinopathy carries significant visual morbidity and loss to follow-up can lead to poorer visual outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the short-term impact of two systems-focused clinical initiatives directed toward reducing loss-to-follow-up and increasing pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP) rates in patients with active proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in an urban, safety-net, teaching-hospital setting. The introduction of an additional weekly PRP clinic was followed by the creation of an active PDR patient registry with an appointment reminder syst

AIM: Diminished pulmonary function and psychological distress, which are common following lobectomy in lung cancer patients, represent a hindrance to the overall recovery. This study aimed to retrospectively explore the effects of preoperative mindfulness training combined with active breathing and circulation exercises on postoperative pulmonary function recovery in lung cancer patients undergoing lobectomy.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 160 patients who underwent lobectomy at Shaoxing People's Hospital. The samples were divided into two groups based on the type of nursing

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) remains a leading cause of early hip morbidity, and its prognosis depends on timely diagnosis and intervention. Since 2013, a nationwide screening program in France has sought to reduce the burden of late-presenting DDH through standardized clinical examination and risk-based ultrasonography. However, disparities in adherence and implementation have been suspected across various medical specialties.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that adherence to the guidelines for early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip differed among practitio

BACKGROUND: Stimulant use disorder has been linked with medication nonadherence and mortality among people living with HIV. Contingency management (CM) is a strategy incentivizing measurable behavior change that is recommended as the first-line treatment for stimulant use disorder and can support antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. However, CM is not widely implemented, in part due to feasibility concerns. Although reductions in substance use short of full abstinence can improve health outcomes, CM programs typically target complete abstinence from stimulant use rather than reduction. To o

IMPORTANCE: Prenatal intensive behavioral therapy (IBT) interventions that promote adequate gestational weight gain (GWG) have had variable and mostly modest effects on clinically relevant maternal and infant outcomes. It is unknown whether different maternal obesity metabolic phenotypes underlie the heterogeneity in response.
OBJECTIVE: To examine GWG, adverse perinatal outcomes, substrate changes, and differential changes in each in a prenatal IBT intervention conducted among pregnant individuals with 2 identified obesity phenotypes.

Neonatal hypothermia remains an important and preventable threat to newborn survival in low-resource settings. Somalia has a high neonatal mortality burden, while published evidence on admission hypothermia in Somali neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) remains limited. Regional evidence provides an important basis for understanding the problem. A systematic review of East African studies reported a pooled neonatal hypothermia prevalence of 57.2%, and a Kenyan tertiary hospital study found hypothermia in 73.7% of neonatal admissions. In Mogadishu, the challenge is shaped by home birth, gaps i

To systematically evaluate the effects of exercise during the post-weight-loss maintenance phase on weight regain. This study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251240526) and reported in accordance with the PRISMA statement. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and CNKI from database inception to October 19, 2025. Randomized controlled trials investigating exercise interventions during the weight-maintenance phase after successful weight loss in individuals with overweight/obesity were included. Risk of bias was assessed using the revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychological and existential distress are common across the cancer trajectory and can impair quality of life, treatment adherence, and family functioning. Although psychosocial and pharmacological interventions provide meaningful support, their overall effects are often modest. This review examines the emerging role of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) as a potential approach to better address the multidimensional nature of cancer-related distress.
RECENT FINDINGS: PAT combines psychedelic compounds with structured psychotherapeutic support and typically includes preparat

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether therapists from orientations that do not explicitly target mentalizing-namely psychodynamic therapy (PDT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-use interventions consistent with Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), and how their use compares with MBT-oriented therapy.
METHODS: Seventy-five verbatim transcripts were randomly selected from audio-recorded psychotherapy sessions involving patients with personality disorders or subclinical personality difficulties. Therapist orientation was determined by self-identification (MBT = 25, CBT = 25, PDT = 25). S

Background: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is essential for ensuring safe, effective, and individualized anti-infective therapy, particularly in patients with complex clinical needs. Variability in pharmacokinetics, challenges in drug administration, and high-dose regimens can compromise adherence and increase the risk of therapeutic failure or resistance. Swallowing difficulties, a common barrier to oral therapy, often necessitate alternative administration routes or customized formulations. However, interventions such as pharmaceutical compounding or manipulation of solid dosage forms may

Hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP), encompassing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-gestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM), constitutes a growing clinical challenge, impacting approximately 23 million live births annually worldwide and conferring substantial maternal and fetal risks. This mini-review evaluates mobile health (mHealth) applications for HIP management, focusing on glycemic monitoring, nutritional interventions, physical activity promotion, insulin dose titration, and postpartum surveillance. Reviewed applications facilitate data collection from glucometers and continuous glu

This article is a narrative review that aims to explore the relationship between religion/spirituality (R/S) and lifestyle medicine (LM) pillars to examine if and how R/S influences health behaviors and inform whole-person LM practice. R/S influences multiple lifestyle behaviors through direct and indirect behavioral, psychological, and social pathways. The strongest evidence supports associations with avoidance of risky substances, stress management, and social connectedness. R/S is also associated with dietary practices and healthier eating patterns, although findings vary across religious t

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a prevalent sleep disorder that significantly compromises human health. While continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) remains the gold standard for treatment, its clinical effectiveness is often limited by poor patient adherence, underscoring the need for alternative therapies. Emerging evidence suggests that physical stimulation therapies may offer a promising non-invasive approach by activating upper airway dilator muscles to maintain airway patency, thereby reducing the severity of OSAS and alleviating related symptoms. This review summarizes re

Treatment discontinuation, including loss to follow-up (LTFU), is an important challenge for TB treatment, particularly for multidrug- or rifampicin-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB). Evidence from low-incidence countries evaluating risk factors for unsuccessful outcomes is scarce. Our study aims to examine treatment outcomes and factors associated with treatment discontinuation for MDR/RR-TB patients in the German health care setting. This observational prospective, multi-centre cohort study will enrol 150 MDR/RR-TB patients in treatment centres between 2025 and 2027. Primary outcome is the descriptio

Low back pain (LBP) is a common and severe musculoskeletal ailment that disproportionately affects the elderly. Some of the top causes of disability and impaired functional independence occur worldwide. As populations age and chronic diseases increase, controlling LBP in the elderly is a public health issue. Polypharmacy and age-related vulnerabilities make widely recommended pharmacologic methods risky for older persons. Physical activity is a favored first-line remedy due to its safety and multidimensional advantages, especially in the elderly. This review synthesizes the literature on elder

Combining pharmacological interventions with neuroimaging in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research presents logistical and methodological challengesparticularly during early study phases, such as recruitment and study visits. Yet, these challenges are rarely reported in detail. This perspective article shares early-phase experiences from a 7-tesla (7T) fMRI clinical study involving individuals with mild cognitive impairment due to AD (MCI-AD) and mild Alzheimer's disease dementia (mild ADD), highlighting recruitment hurdles and offering practical recommendations. From a pool of 1,001 patients, 476
