Electrophysiological Signatures of Planned and Unplanned Continuous Movement Termination in Parkinson's Disease.

The ability to inhibit and adapt our behavior in response to changing stimuli is a critical component of everyday life. Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) may struggle to inhibit behavior, particularly in the presence of dopaminergic therapy, which can result in impulsive behavior. Impulse control disorders are often operationalized in the laboratory using motor inhibition tasks. However, deficits of motor inhibition tasks are not always observed in PD, perhaps because of the nature of the motor inhibition that is engaged in typical tasks (e.g., suppression of incipient movement such as

The Ins and Outs of Dopamine Transporter Gene Manipulation: In Vivo Models of DAT Dysfunction.

The clinical efficacy of psychostimulant drugs, which target monoamine transporters, in treating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHDs) has stimulated interest on the role of transporter proteins like the dopamine (DA) transporter (DAT) in neurotransmission as well as the potential utility of DAT knockout organisms as models for neuropsychiatric disorders. Indeed, the study of DAT-deficient worms, flies, fish, mice, and rats has revealed a conserved role for DAT in the control of motor behavior as well as repetitive behavior, threat aversion, social behavior, and cognition in mammal

What does data on adverse reactions reveal about benzodiazepines and suicide-related risk?: A disproportionality analysis using FDA FAERS pharmacovigilance data.

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are widely used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, but their association with suicidal/self-injurious behavior is conflicting. This study investigated the relationship between BZDs and suicidal and self-injurious behavior, by analyzing data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System. We analyzed FDA Adverse Event Reporting System data from January 2004 and March 2025, to analyze adverse events (AEs) associated with suicidal and self-injurious behavior in BZDs. Thirty-eight BZDs were initially identified via the WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Code System. Af

The influence of pitcher handedness on pitch-calling behavior: Insights from fMRI study on baseball umpires.

This functional magnetic resonance imaging study delves into the impact of experience and pitcher handedness on the pitch-calling behavior of baseball umpires. Expert and intermediate umpires were asked to make ball/strike calls on videotaped pitches of left- and right-handed pitchers and rate their certainty for the call while undergoing scanning. Behavioral results replicated previous findings that expert umpires were more certain but not more accurate or quicker than intermediate umpires, suggesting that, as sports officials, umpires may learn to project confidence to maintain control of th

Clinical and therapeutic implications of cavernous sinus invasion in pituitary adenomas.

Invasion of the cavernous sinus by pituitary adenomas impedes complete surgical resection, compromises biochemical remission, and increases the risk of further tumor recurrence. Accurate preoperative MRI-based diagnosis or intraoperative direct inspection of cavernous sinus invasion are essential for optimal surgical planning and for tailoring postoperative therapeutic strategies, depending on whether a total resection has been achieved, or tumoral tissue has been left in surgically inaccessible locations. The molecular mechanisms underlying the invasive behavior of pituitary adenomas remain p

Single administration of a psychedelic [(R)-DOI] influences coping strategies to an escapable social stress.

Psychedelic compounds have potentially rapid, long-lasting anxiolytic, antidepressive and anti-inflammatory effects. We investigated whether the psychedelic compound (R)-2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine [(R)-DOI], a selective 5-HT2A receptor partial agonist, decreases stress-related behavior in male mice exposed to repeated social aggression. Additionally, we explored the likelihood that these behavioral changes are related to anti-inflammatory properties of [(R)-DOI]. Animals were subjected to the Stress Alternatives Model (SAM), an escapable social stress paradigm in which animals develop rea

Salivary markers of aggression - The possible alterations in salivary hormones levels to identify perpetrators of aggression-related violence.

Aggression, understood as intentional actions aimed at causing harm, remains in a direct relation with the phenomenon of interpersonal violence, especially its physical form. Creating an objective marker of aggression would be an important tool for preventing, protecting the victims and maintaining control over suspects. There have been attempts to link aggression with shifts in hormone levels, including those that can be measured in saliva, especially testosterone and cortisol. The systematic review aimed to assess changes in salivary hormone levels among perpetrators of violence, with partic

Impulsivity, decision-making, and risk behavior in bipolar disorder and major depression from bipolar multiplex families.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are characterized by specific alterations of mood. In both disorders, alterations in cognitive domains such as impulsivity, decision-making, and risk-taking have been reported. Identification of similarities and differences of these domains in BD and MDD could give further insight into their etiology. The present study assessed impulsivity, decision-making, and risk-taking behavior in BD and MDD patients from bipolar multiplex families. METHODS: Eighty-two participants (BD type I, n = 25; MDD, n = 26; healthy relatives (HR)

Should problematic sexual behavior be viewed under the scope of addiction? A systematic review based on DSM-5 substance use disorder criteria.

Despite similarities between compulsive sexual disorder and substance use disorder, the issue whether problematic sexual behavior should be viewed within an addiction framework continues to be a subject of debate with no consensus regarding its conceptualization and diagnosis criteria. Examining the presence of addiction criteria among clinical and no clinical samples in the existing literature could permit to ascertain clinical validity of sex addiction diagnosis and support its overlapping feature with other addictive disorders. The aim of this systematic review was to examine this issue by

Transcriptome analysis reveals dysfunction of the endoplasmic reticulum protein processing in the sonic muscle of small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) following noise exposure.

Noise pollution is increasingly prevalent in aquatic ecosystems, causing detrimental effects on growth and behavior of marine fishes. The physiological responses of fish to underwater noise are poorly understood. In this study, we used RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) to study the transcriptome of the sonic muscle in small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) after exposure to a 120 dB noise for 30 min. The behavioral experiment revealed that noise exposure resulted in accelerated tail swimming behavior at the beginning of the exposure period, followed by loss of balance at the end of experiment. T

Electroacupuncture Improves Depression-Like Behavior by Regulating the Abundance of Lactobacillus and Staphylococci in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that gut microbiota can affect depression-like behavior, and electroacupuncture (EA) can regulate the composition and abundance of gut microbiota. At the same time, not a lot of research has been done on how EA affects gut microbiota to depression-like behavior. The objective of this study was to study the associated mechanisms by which EA exerts antidepressant effects by modulating gut microbiota. METHODS: Twenty-four C57BL/6 male mice were randomly divided into three groups, one group (n = 8) was the normal control group (NC). And the other two groups w

Maternal immune activation alters social affective behavior and sensitivity to corticotropin releasing factor in male but not female rats.

Prenatal infection increases risk for neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism in offspring. In rodents, prenatal administration of the viral mimic Polyinosinic: polycytidylic acid (Poly I: C) allows for investigation of developmental consequences of gestational sickness on offspring social behavior and neural circuit function. Because maternal immune activation (MIA) disrupts cortical development and sociability, we examined approach and avoidance in a rat social affective preference (SAP) task. Following maternal Poly I:C (0.5 mg/kg) injection on gestational day 12.5, male adult offspring

The role of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in anorexia nervosa.

The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a growth factor belonging to the neurotrophin family which plays a pivotal role in the differentiation, survival, and plasticity of neurons in the central nervous system. Evidence suggests that BDNF is an important signal molecule in the regulation of energy balance and thus implicated in body weight control. The discovery of BDNF-expressing neurons in the paraventricular hypothalamus which is important in the regulation of energy intake, physical activity, and thermogenesis gives more evidence to the suggested participation of BDNF in eating beh

Neurobehavioral and inflammatory responses following traumatic brain injury in male and female mice.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of mortality and is associated with a high rate of functional comorbidities, including motor, cognitive, anxiety, depression, and emotional disorders. TBI pathophysiology and recovery are complicated and involve several mechanistic pathways that control neurobehavioral outcomes. In this study, male and female C57Bl/6 J mice were subjected to a controlled cortical impact model of TBI or sham injury and evaluated for different neurobehavioral and inflammatory outcomes over a month. We demonstrate that TBI mice have increased motor dysfunction at ea

Withdrawal from 3-Fluoroethamphetamine induces hyperactivity and depression-like behaviors in male mice.

3-Fluoroethamphetamine (3-FEA) belongs to the amphetamine class of stimulant drugs and functions as a releasing agent for the monoamine neurotransmitters norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. 3-FEA acts on the central nervous system and elicits physical and mental side effects, such as euphoria, increased heart rate, and excitement. However, little is known about the withdrawal symptoms and behavioral changes induced by 3-FEA administration. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term consequences of 3-FEA administration (twice a day, 7 days, i.p.; 1 and 10 mg/kg) in C57BL/6J mice (male, 7
