Central projections of the lateral line and eighth nerves in the bowfin, Amia calva.

The first-order connections of the anterior and posterior lateral line nerves and of the eighth nerve were determined in the bowfin, Amia calva, using experimental degeneration and anterograde HRP transport techniques. The termination sites of these nerves define a dorsal lateralis cell column and a ventral octavus cell column. The anterior and posterior lateralis nerves distribute ipsilaterally to two medullary nuclei-nucleus medialis and nucleus caudalis. Nucleus medialis comprises the rostral two-thirds of the lateralis column and contains large, Purkinje-like cells dorsally and polygonal,

Neuroaxonal dystrophy, a juvenile-adult form.

This paper is an anatomoclinical study of a neuroaxonal dystrophy case, starting in childhood and evolving up to maturity, which may be considered as a juvenile-adult form of this syndrome. Several of the morphologic emphasized aspects suggest that this juvenile-adult form is a primary affection of the axon and therefore, may be considered as a separate entity, differing from the Hallervorden-Spatz disease.

Therapeutic Potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles in the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, detrimental immune response, and neuroinflammation are mainly responsible for the injury and degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the brains of patients suffering from PD. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic approach for treating PD due to their ability to suppress the activation of inflammatory immune cells and enhance the viability and function of

LanCL2 Implicates in Testicular Redox Homeostasis and Acrosomal Maturation.

Redox balance plays an important role in testicular homeostasis. While lots of antioxidant molecules have been identified as widely expressed, the understanding of the critical mechanisms for redox management in male germ cells is inadequate. This study identified LanCL2 as a major male germ cell-specific antioxidant gene that is important for testicular homeostasis. Highly expressed in the brain and testis, LanCL2 expression correlates with testicular maturation and brain development. LanCL2 is enriched in spermatocytes and round spermatids of the testis. By examining LanCL2 knockout mice, we

The "microcephalic hydrocephalus" paradox as a paradigm of altered neural stem cell biology.

Characterized by enlarged brain ventricles, hydrocephalus is a common neurological disorder classically attributed to a primary defect in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) homeostasis. Microcephaly ("small head") and hydrocephalus are typically viewed as two mutually exclusive phenomenon, since hydrocephalus is thought of as a fluid "plumbing" disorder leading to CSF accumulation, ventricular dilatation, and resultant macrocephaly. However, some cases of hydrocephalus can be associated with microcephaly. Recent work in the genomics of congenital hydrocephalus (CH) and an improved understanding of the

Effect of combination of peripheral oxytocin and naltrexone at subthreshold doses on food intake, body weight and feeding-related brain gene expression in male rats.

In a recent case report involving a male with hypothalamic obesity, concurrent administration of oxytocin (OT) and an opioid receptor antagonist, naltrexone (NTX), synergistically affected energy balance. Here, by using laboratory rats, we examined whether the reported synergy between OT and NTX in the context of food intake extends beyond that one unique case. We found that intravenous OT+NTX combination, at doses subthreshold for each of the drugs individually, decreased episodic consumption of a 10% sucrose solution in non-deprived animals. Daily administration of OT and NTX just before a s

Potential pharmacological approaches for the treatment of HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorders.

HIV associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are the spectrum of cognitive impairments present in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The number of patients affected with HAND ranges from 30 to 50% of HIV infected individuals and although the development of combinational antiretroviral therapy (cART) has improved longevity, HAND continues to pose a significant clinical problem as the current standard of care does not alleviate or prevent HAND symptoms. At present, the pathological mechanisms contributing to HAND remain unclear, but evidence suggests that it st

Integrated In-Ear Device for Auditory Health Assessment.

Clinical assessment of the human auditory system is an integral part of evaluating the health of a patient's cognitive processes. Conventional tests performed by audiologists include the Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) and the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), both of which present an audio stimulus to the patient in order to elicit a change in brain state measurable by electroencephalography (EEG) techniques. Spatial monitoring of the electrophysiological activity in the auditory cortex, temporal cortex, and brain stem during auditory stimulus evaluation can be used to pinpoint to loca

Multimodal Neuronavigation in Microsurgery Resection of BrainStem Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgery is a common treatment of brainstem tumors. However, misdirection, vascular damage, nerves injuries, paralysis, even death are all well-known complications, and the risk of adverse events is more likely in less experienced operators. This study was aimed to validate the accuracy of multimodal neuronavigation during microsurgery resection of brainstem tumors. METHODS: Ten patients with brainstem tumors underwent preoperative MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, computed tomography, three-dimensional print, and images loaded into the neuronavigation platform were used for its

Pathophysiology of tic disorders.

Tics are the defining symptom of Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders (TDs); however, they form only a part of their overall symptoms. The recent surge of studies addressing the underlying pathophysiology of tics has revealed an intricate picture involving multiple brain areas and complex pathways. The myriad of pathophysiological findings stem, at least partially, from the multifaceted properties of tics and the disorders that express them. Distinct brain pathways mediate the expression of tics, whereas others are involved in the generation of the premonitory urge, associated comorbiditi

Reversible lesions in the brain parenchyma in Wilson's disease confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging: earlier administration of chelating therapy can reduce the damage to the brain.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the resolution of brain lesions in patients with Wilson's disease during the long-term chelating therapy using magnetic resonance imaging and a possible significance of the time latency between the initial symptoms of the disease and the introduction of this therapy. Initial magnetic resonance examination was performed in 37 patients with proven neurological form of Wilson's disease with cerebellar, parkinsonian and dystonic presentation. Magnetic resonance reexamination was done 5.7 ± 1.3 years later in 14 patients. Patients were divided into: group A, wh

Endogenous neurogenesis following ischaemic brain injury: insights for therapeutic strategies.

Ischaemic stroke is among the most common yet most intractable types of central nervous system (CNS) injury in the adult human population. In the acute stages of disease, neurons in the ischaemic lesion rapidly die and other neuronal populations in the ischaemic penumbra are vulnerable to secondary injury. Multiple parallel approaches are being investigated to develop neuroprotective, reparative and regenerative strategies for the treatment of stroke. Accumulating evidence indicates that cerebral ischaemia initiates an endogenous regenerative response within the adult brain that potentiates ad

Brain inflammation and adult neurogenesis: the dual role of microglia.

In the adult mammalian brain, neurogenesis from neural stem/progenitor cells continues in two regions: the subgranular zone in the dentate gyrus and the subventricular zone lining the lateral ventricles. The generated neuroblasts migrate to their appropriate location and differentiate to mature granule cells and olfactory bulb interneurons, respectively. Following injury such as stroke, neuroblasts generated in the subventricular zone migrate also into areas which are not normally neurogenic, e.g. striatum and cerebral cortex. In the initial studies in rodents, brain inflammation and microglia

[The comatose child].

The child who presents with acute coma runs a high risk of cardiopulmonary insufficiency, direct brain injury or even cerebral herniation. The case-management of such child requires a coma-specific emergent evaluation, immediate treatment of any hypoxicischemic insults and of the underlying cause. The coma-specific examination includes performance of child-adapted Glasgow Coma Score, the evaluation of brain stem functions such as pupillary response to light, cough- and gag reflex, and determination of all vital signs including body temperature. Treatment of hypoxicischemic insults includes con

Survivin-dependent angiogenesis in ischemic brain: molecular mechanisms of hypoxia-induced up-regulation.

Approaches to regulating angiogenesis in the brain, which may diminish parenchymal damage after stroke, are lacking. Survivin, the inhibitor of apoptosis protein, is up-regulated in vitro in vascular endothelial cells by angiogenic factors, including vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF). To evaluate the in vivo role of survivin in the brain in response to hypoxia/ischemia, we used a mouse model of stroke and show that 2 days after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion, survivin is uniquely expressed by microvessels that form in the peri-infarct and infarct regions. The extent of

Pial-glial barrier abnormalities in fetuses with Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy.

This report concerns light and electron microscopic studies on the central nervous system of a 20-week and an 18-week fetus with Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy (FCMD). The diagnosis of FCMD was established by prenatal molecular genetic analysis. Cerebral lesions containing neurites, subpial granular cells and glias, accompanied by cortical dysplasia were found in both cases. Small irregular defects, readily detectable by periodic acid-methenamine-silver staining or by immunohistochemical staining for S-100 protein, were observed in the cerebral surface. More severe dysplasia was eviden
