An interpretable deep-learning approach to detect biomarkers in anxious-depressed symptoms from prefrontal fNIRS signals during an autobiographical memory test.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anxious-depressed (AD) symptoms have more severe mood disorders and cognitive impairment than those with non-anxious depression (NAD) symptoms. Therefore, it is important to clarify the underlying neurophysiology of these two symptom groups to optimize treatment. METHODS: We developed an interpretable deep-learning framework based on two convolutional neural networks (CNN) to diagnose depression from functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) neuroimaging data recorded during an autobiographical memory test (AMT) from 824 participants. This system was designed

Generation of high-resolution MPRAGE-like images from 3D head MRI localizer (AutoAlign Head) images using a deep learning-based model.

PURPOSE: Magnetization prepared rapid gradient echo (MPRAGE) is a useful three-dimensional (3D) T1-weighted sequence, but is not a priority in routine brain examinations. We hypothesized that converting 3D MRI localizer (AutoAlign Head) images to MPRAGE-like images with deep learning (DL) would be beneficial for diagnosing and researching dementia and neurodegenerative diseases. We aimed to establish and evaluate a DL-based model for generating MPRAGE-like images from MRI localizers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brain MRI examinations including MPRAGE taken at a single institution for investigation

Decoding Epigenetic Enhancer-Promoter Interactions in Periodontitis via Transformer-GAN: A Deep Learning Framework for Inflammatory Gene Regulation and Biomarker Discovery.

BACKGROUND: Widespread tissue destruction and dysregulated immune responses are hallmarks of periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease. Although enhancer-promoter (E-P) interactions play a crucial role in gene regulation, little is known about how they affect the epigenetic regulation of periodontal inflammation. By combining DNA methylation and gene expression data using a novel deep learning framework, this study sought to decode the E-P regulatory landscape in periodontitis. METHODS: We examined matched genome-wide DNA methylation (GSE173081) and RNA-seq (GSE173078) datasets with integ

Comparison of deep learning-based segmentation and registration using pre-treatment contours for online rectal delineation in magnetic resonance-guided radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Deep learning promises accurate target contouring for online adaptive MR-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) in rectal cancer. However, delineating the mesorectal clinical target volume (CTV) remains challenging. Integrating planning-based contours, delineated offline before treatment, can provide anatomical shape and boundary information. This study evaluated deep learning-based segmentation and registration models to determine the optimal approach for incorporating planning contours into online rectal contouring. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Deep learning-based segmentation and re

Understanding the Engagement and Interaction of Superusers and Regular Users in UK Respiratory Online Health Communities: Deep Learning-Based Sentiment Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Online health communities (OHCs) enable people with long-term conditions (LTCs) to exchange peer self-management experiential information, advice, and support. Engagement of "superusers," that is, highly active users, plays a key role in holding together the community and ensuring an effective exchange of support and information. Further studies are needed to explore regular users' interactions with superusers, their sentiments during interactions, and their ultimate impact on the self-management of LTCs. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to gain a better understanding of sentiment distr

Deep learning based automated left atrial segmentation and flow quantification of real time phase contrast MRI in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Real time 2D phase contrast (RTPC) MRI is useful for flow quantification in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients, but data analysis requires time-consuming anatomical contouring for many cardiac time frames. Our goal was to develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) for fully automated left atrial (LA) flow quantification. Forty-four AF patients underwent cardiac MRI including LA RTPC, collecting a median of 358 timeframes per scan. 15,307 semi-manual derived RTPC LA contours comprised ground truth for CNN training, validation, and testing. CNN vs. human performance was assessed using Dice scor

Aerosol optical depth retrieval from Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS): Advancing the first hyperspectral geostationary air quality mission using deep learning.

Aerosol optical depth (AOD) quantifies atmospheric aerosol loading and is fundamental for air quality monitoring, aerosol-climate interaction studies, and climate change assessments. Traditional satellite-based AOD retrieval methods using radiative transfer models are computationally intensive and prone to uncertainties stemming from assumptions about aerosol properties and surface reflectance. To mitigate these limitations, we proposed a deep learning-based AOD retrieval method using Attentive Interpretable Tabular Learning (TabNet). This approach enables accurate and efficient AOD retrieval

Deep Learning-Guided Discovery of Celestolide as a Natural Allosteric Inhibitor Targeting Botrytis cinerea CYP51 and Its Application in Strawberry Preservation.

Most CYP51 inhibitors act competitively and are prone to resistance, whereas allosteric inhibitors hold promise but are difficult to develop. In this study, we employed the neural relational inference framework alongside the Gaussian network-based deep learning model CorrSite2.0 to proactively identify allosteric sites on B. cinerea CYP51. We confirmed celestolide as a natural allosteric inhibitor, targeting CYP51. Celestolide forms strong interactions with CYP51 at the identified allosteric site, inducing conformational changes in CYP51 that suppress its enzymatic activity. These findings wer

Deep learning-based evaluation of the severity of mitral regurgitation in canine myxomatous mitral valve disease patients using digital stethoscope recordings.

BACKGROUND: Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) represents the most prevalent cardiac disorder in dogs, frequently resulting in mitral regurgitation (MR) and congestive heart failure. Although echocardiography is the gold standard for diagnosis, it is an expensive tool that involves significant clinical training to ensure consistent application. Deep learning models offer an innovative approach to assessing MR using digital stethoscopic recordings, enabling early screening and precise prediction. Thus, in this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a convolutional neural network 6 (CNN6)

Multi-strategy dung beetle optimization for robust indoor object detection and tracking for visually impaired people with hybrid deep learning networks.

Visually impaired people generally face many troubles in their everyday lives, and technical involvement might help them perform these tasks. Object detection is a significant aspect of computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML), which plays a substantial part in recognizing and detecting objects in a video or image. Dissimilar objects are detected, and their shape, size, and position data are accurately acquired through object detection. Particularly, visually challenged people are not set to face sudden situations by themselves while moving. Hence, these situations are a significant atta

Estimation of 3D Ground Reaction Force and 2D Center of Pressure Using Deep Learning and Load Cells Across Various Gait Conditions.

Traditional force plate-based systems offer high measurement precision but are limited to laboratory settings, restricting their use in real-world environments. To address this, we propose a method for estimating a three-axis ground reaction force (GRF) and two-axis center of pressure (CoP) using a shoe embedded with three uniaxial load cells. The estimation was conducted under five gait conditions: straight walking, turning, uphill, downhill, and running. Data were collected from 40 healthy young adults. Four deep-learning models-Fully Connected Neural Network (FCNN), Convolutional Neural Net
