Congenital defects of the upper lateral incisors (ULI): condition and measurements of the other teeth, measurements of the superior arch, head and face.

We surveyed a French male population for the incidence of missing or reduced upper lateral incisors (ULI). In 5,738 subjects, we observed an incidence of 1.59% with one or two reduced ULI (the other normal) and 1.90% with one or two missing ULI (the other normal or reduced), altogether, 3.49% affected subjects. Furthermore, 250 random controls were observed. Agenesis of other teeth is more frequent in propositi. Missing thir molars were 12.4% in controls, 24.0% in propositi with reduced ULI and 39.6% in propositi with two missing ULI. Furthermore, agenesis of incisors, canines and premolars ra

Ocular pathology in the elfin face syndrome (the Fanconi-Schlesinger type of idiopathic hypercalcaemia of infancy). Histochemical and ultrastructural study of a case.

The pathology, particularly the ocular pathology, is described in a 42-year-old mildly retarded man with a history of vomiting in infancy. He had an elfin-like face. He died having a pancreatic carcinoma. At autopsy, a supravalvular aortic stenosis and a hypoplastic aorta found clinically were confirmed. Stainings for calcium were positive in the aortic wall, the kidneys, the adrenals and the spleen. In the eyes, calcium was found in the corneal epithelium and endothelium, in corneal keratocytes and stroma, in conjunctival epithelium and in the sclera. Electron microscopy of the eyes revealed

Neural oscillatory dynamics reveal altered top-down and integrative mechanisms during face processing in autistic children and unaffected siblings of autistic children.

Face processing is fundamental to social communication and has been a major focus of autism research. While event-related potential (ERPs) studies of face processing have produced mixed results, little work has examined neuro-oscillatory dynamics, which may better capture the integrity of underlying networks. To address this gap, EEG was recorded from children aged 8-13 across three groups: autistic (n = 50), non-autistic (n = 38) and siblings of autistic children (n = 26), during a visual oddball task. In a blocked design, participants viewed faces and objects, presented upright and inverted

Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Reference Rod for "Smiley Face Rod" Repair of Lumbar Spondylolysis in a Patient with High Body Mass Index.

INTRODUCTION: The "Smiley Face Rod" (SFR) method is an effective direct repair technique for lumbar spondylolysis. However, three-dimensional rod contouring is technically demanding, particularly in patients with a high body mass index (BMI), where deep soft tissue obscures anatomical landmarks. TECHNICAL NOTE: We report a technique using a patient-specific three-dimensional (3D)-printed model to create a sterilized "Reference Rod" template. A 27-year-old male with bilateral L5 spondylolysis and severe obesity (BMI 39.8 kg/m2) underwent SFR repair. A 3D model was printed from preoperative com

Preoxygenation with high-flow nasal oxygen versus conventional techniques using anatomical face mask in patients undergoing exploratory laparotomy: A randomised comparative study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Preoxygenation is crucial during rapid sequence induction, especially in peritonitis patients undergoing exploratory laparotomy who are prone to hypoxaemia. This study compares high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) versus facemask for preoxygenation efficacy, laryngoscopy duration, desaturation, arterial blood gases, and patient comfort. METHODS: Sixty consenting, haemodynamically stable patients aged ≥15 years, scheduled for exploratory laparotomy, were randomised into two equal groups receiving preoxygenation using either HFNO at 50 L/min for 5 min or standard anatomical facema

Effects of theta burst stimulation on neural connectivity and visual perception following attention modification of own-face viewing in body dysmorphic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with body dysmorphic disorder misperceive defects of their physical appearance. Current evidence suggests that visual processing abnormalities may underlie this core symptom. Separate pre-clinical studies testing perceptual and attentional interventions and non-invasive neuromodulation suggest that these visual processing abnormalities may be modifiable, but their combined effects on neural connectivity and perceptual processing remain unclear. METHODS: Thirty-nine unmedicated men and women with body dysmorphic disorder or subclinical body dysmorphic disorder received

Eschars and estate fever: A case series from the Johorean oil palm heartland highlighting the changing face of scrub typhus in Malaysia.

Scrub typhus, a zoonotic bacterial infection caused by the arthropod-borne, Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacillus Orientia tsutsugamushi and transmitted by larval chiggers, is an underdiagnosed cause of acute undifferentiated febrile illness. Its clinical spectrum ranges from a self-limited denguelike illness to rapidly progressive multiorgan dysfunction driven by smallvessel vasculitis, including pneumonitis, acute kidney injury, hepatitis, encephalitis and circulatory shock. Early recognition is frequently missed because the characteristic eschar may be absent or easily overlooked i

Structural and genetic signatures of two classes of HCV E2 neutralizing face antibodies from non-human primates immunized with a recombinant E1E2.

Hepatitis C continues to be a significant public health problem despite advancements in antiviral therapeutics. To eliminate this disease, an effective vaccine against new infections and re-infections is needed. However, to date only one Hepatitis C virus (HCV) envelope protein (E1E2) immunogen, developed by Chiron Inc., has been tested in a Phase I clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT00500747 ). To establish a benchmark for elicitation of broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) by E1E2, we previously immunized non-human primates (NHPs) with this immunogen and isolated monoclonal

Investigation of two pore types in Schlemm's canal inner wall endothelium in flow-type areas using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy.

With the introduction of automated serial block-face imaging, we can now more accurately investigate the characteristics of pores in the inner wall endothelium of Schlemm's canal (SC). Previous studies analyzing pores using two-dimensional (2D) scanning or transmission electron microscopy were limited to either en face or random cross-sectional imaging and may have overlooked some of the pores. Additionally, the pores' morphological characteristics in different segmental flow areas (i.e. high-, low-, and non-flow) have not been fully explored. This study aimed to further characterize the two t

The Comparable Efficacy Between Tranexamic Acid Intradermal Injection and Pulsed Dye Laser for Treatment of Post-Acne Erythema: A Split-Face Therapy.

Post-acne erythema (PAE) is persistent erythema after acne vulgaris (AV) inflammatory lesions have resolved. Pulsed dye laser (PDL) is the gold standard for vascular lesions and is effective for PAE. Tranexamic acid (TA) can reduce vascular endothelial growth, angiogenesis, and inflammation by inhibiting plasminogen activity, and can be used in PAE treatment. This case report aim to compare the clinical efficacy of intradermal TA and PDL therapy using a split-face design in a 23-year-old female with moderate AV, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and PEA. Potential Impacts of Prolonged Face Mask Use on Temporomandibular Joint Health as Neglected Lifestyle Repercussions of COVID-19 Pandemic-A Narrative Review.

Since December 2019, COVID-19 has rapidly spread worldwide, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a pandemic and advocate for the widespread use of face masks to mitigate transmission. In this review, we delve into the potential impact of prolonged face mask use on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) health, an area that has garnered limited attention amidst COVID-19 research. Research has revealed that improper mask fit and constant readjustment can lead to TMJ abnormalities. Similarly, there is a demonstrated correlation between continuous mask usage and an increased incidenc
