The Application of 3D Printing Technology for Simultaneous Orthognathic Surgery and Mandibular Contour Osteoplasty in the Treatment of Craniofacial Deformities.

BACKGROUND: Because of the limitation of specific preoperative design and surgical templates, orthognathic surgery and mandibular contour osteoplasty are generally performed in two stages. Three-dimensional printing technology has improved the accuracy of the surgery and results in good surgical predictability easily. This study aims to confirm the effectiveness, feasibility and precision of simultaneous mandibular contour osteoplasty and orthognathic surgery with the assistance of 3D printing technology. METHODS: Ten patients, who were diagnosed with mandibular hypertrophy and bimaxillary de

Relationship between high-resolution computed tomography densitometry and audiometry in otosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) densitometry in the diagnosis of otosclerosis and to investigate the relationship between CT densitometry and audiometry. METHODS: HRCT findings and audiometry were compared among 34 patients (34 ears, the otosclerosis group) with surgically confirmed otosclerosis between January 2007 and December 2007 and 33 patients (33 opposite normal ears, the control group) with facial paralysis diagnosed at the same period of time. Seven regions of interest (ROI) were set manually around the otic

Clinical characteristics and prognosis of temporary miller fisher syndrome following COVID-19 vaccination: a systematic review of case studies.

BACKGROUND: Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is a subtype of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) which is characterized by the three components of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and areflexia. Some studies reported MFS as an adverse effect of the COVID-19 vaccination. We aimed to have a detailed evaluation on demographic, clinical, and para-clinical characteristics of subjects with MFS after receiving COVID-19 vaccines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A thorough search strategy was designed, and PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were searched to find relevant articles. Each screening step was done by twice, and in c

Rare case of a 3-year-old with Candida skull base osteomyelitis: lessons to be learnt.

Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is a serious and rare condition most commonly seen in elderly diabetic or immunocompromised patients as a complication of otitis externa. We present the case of a previously healthy 3-year-old girl who presented to the paediatric emergency department with vomiting, fever, lethargy, headache and left-sided facial nerve palsy. The initial CT head revealed left-sided otitis media with otomastoiditis and she was managed with intravenous antibiotics and myringotomy with grommet insertion with initial improvement. Two weeks later she re-presented having deteriorated an

Thirty-Day Perioperative Outcomes in Pediatric Parotidectomy.

IMPORTANCE: Limited information exists about the short-term morbidity of parotidectomy in children. This information is important when counseling parents and planning treatment for children with parotid masses. OBJECTIVE: To examine 30-day perioperative outcomes after parotidectomy in the pediatric population. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A prospective case series of 87 pediatric patients who underwent parotidectomy from January 1, 2008, to June 30, 2015, performed by 2 pediatric head and neck specialists in a tertiary care pediatric hospital. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Thirty-day pe

A case of relapsing-remitting facial palsy and ipsilateral brachial plexopathy caused by HSV-1.

The etiologies of Bell's palsy and brachial neuritis remain uncertain, and the conditions rarely co-occur or reoccur. Here we present a woman in her twenties who had several relapsing-remitting episodes with left-sided facial palsy and brachial neuropathy. The episodes always started with painful left-sided oral blisters. Repeat PCRs HSV-1 DNA from oral vesicular lesions were positive. Extensive screening did not reveal any other underlying cause. Findings on MRI T2-weighted brachial plexus STIR images, using a 3.0-Tesla scanner during an episode, were compatible with brachial plexus neuritis.

Indications and radiological findings of acute otitis media and its complications.

Most cases of acute otitis media resolve with antibiotics and imaging is not required. When treatment fails or a complication is suspected, imaging plays a crucial role. Since the introduction of antibiotic treatment, the complication rate has decreased dramatically. Nevertheless, given the critical clinical relevance of complications, the importance of early diagnosis is vital. Our objective was to review the clinical and radiological features of acute otitis media and its complications. They were classified based on their location, as intratemporal or intracranial. Imaging makes it possible

Modified auricular cartilage sling for paralytic ectropion.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes of a modified auricular cartilage sling for paralytic ectropion. METHODS: We treated 17 eyelids of 17 patients (average 67 years old) with an auricular cartilage sling between 2004 and 2012. All patients had paralytic ectropion with lower eyelid ptosis. Cartilage was harvested via an incision just inside the anterior rim of the helix. Skin incisions were made at the subciliary, medial and lateral canthal regions. The auricular cartilage graft was sutured to the medial canthal tendon medially, lateral orbital rim laterally, inferior tarsus superiorly, and lo

Bilateral inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor mastoiditis.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myoblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare, mesenchymal neoplasms most commonly located in areas of previous inflammation. In the temporal bone, these tumors typically present as solitary, space-occupying lesions that clinically resemble chronic otitis media. METHODS: We present a case of bilateral IMTs with facial nerve involvement, sigmoid sinus thrombosis, leptomeningeal enhancement, and seizures. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates the need for a high index of suspicion of IMT when imaging reveals bilateral mastoid opacification. These tumors are more aggressive th

Medical, surgical and audiological complications of the first 100 adult cochlear implant patients in Birmingham.

Of the first 100 patients implanted on the Midland Cochlear Implant Programme the commonest aetiologies of deafness were idiopathic 31 per cent, meningitis 28 per cent and cochlear otosclerosis 16 per cent. The major complication rate was three per cent. The most severe was one individual who post-operatively developed a cerebral infarct and subsequently died. The minor complication rate was 39 per cent, all of which successfully resolved, and included 11 cases of wound infection, nine cases of vertigo, three transient facial palsies and two post-operative bleeds. Older patients and men were m

Highly variable distribution of HSV-1-specific DNA in human geniculate, vestibular and spiral ganglia.

Viral reactivation in temporal ganglia is the suspected cause of Bell's palsy, vestibular neuritis and sudden hearing loss. Since the distribution of latent herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) in geniculate, vestibular and spiral ganglia of individual human temporal bones could have implications for the explanation of isolated as well as combined disorders of these three cranial nerves, we examined these ganglia in 18 human temporal bones of adults by nested polymerase chain reaction. In all of the temporal bones HSV-1 specific DNA was detected: 10/18 (56%) of the geniculate, 11/18 (61%) of the vest
