"You know how men are": the gendered nature of support during pregnancy in South Africa - an exploratory convergent mixed-method study.

Male partner support during pregnancy has been linked to positive outcomes and can enhance women's rights to reproductive health and well-being. Such involvement can, however, have gendering effects. In addition, the role of other men in pregnancy support is under-researched. In an exploratory convergent mixed methods study, we investigated the gender dynamics evident in pregnant women's reporting of, and stories concerning, support from male partners and other significant men. We administered the Pregnancy Supportability Research Kit in two health districts of the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

"At the end of the day I'd still have to use a condom!": A qualitative investigation of use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among young gay and bisexual men in Nairobi, Kenya.

Despite availability of highly effective oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for close to a decade, uptake and adherence among at-risk young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in Kenya, remain significantly low. This study investigated levels of PrEP knowledge, motivations, facilitators and barriers influencing PrEP initiation, persistence and adherence among YMSM, in efforts to optimise use and reduce risk of new HIV infections. In September 2021, 22 YMSM selected from 248 YMSM who had previously participated in an integrated bio-behavioural sexual health survey, took part in semi-structur

A systematic review identifying personally modifiable factors for self-harm recovery in young people and the barriers and facilitators to their implementation.

INTRODUCTION: While research has extensively examined self-harm prevention and risk factors, fewer studies have explored recovery processes. Personally modifiable factors - lifestyle, skill-based, or behavioural aspects an individual can influence - may support self-harm recovery. This review aimed to identify these factors for young people and, secondarily, the barriers and facilitators affecting their implementation. METHODS: Recovery was defined symptomatically (reduction or cessation of self-harm) and personally, using the CHIME framework (Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning, Empowerme

Pregnancy termination outside the formal healthcare system before Dobbs: Consideration and attempts among abortion seekers in Mississippi.

Research on abortion outside formal healthcare has focused primarily on self-sourced medication abortion (mifepristone and misoprostol or misoprostol alone). Less is known about how abortion seekers understand other pregnancy-ending practices, including non-evidence-based methods such as herbs, vitamins, alcohol, or physical stress. We examine how abortion seekers in pre-Dobbs Mississippi learned about, evaluated, attempted, or rejected these methods before obtaining clinic-based abortion care. Between December 2021 and August 2022, we conducted semi-structured telephone interviews with 24 abo

Raising a king: a parent's perspective on bilirubin neurotoxicity.

This article chronicles the life of James Earl Bostic, known affectionately to his family and friends as "King James." We provide a parental and family perspective on the incredibly challenging journey he faced with his family resulting from unnecessary suffering due to kernicterus, a completely preventable disease. As his mother, I struggled to understand the significant impact of hyperbilirubinemia triggered by glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, while also raising his sibling and navigating broken systems of care. I became a tireless advocate, pushing his educational team t

The MultiSOCIAL Toolbox: An open-source toolkit for advancing multimodal interaction research.

Human interaction is intrinsically multimodal, in that it unfolds across different kinds of behaviors (or modalities). However, many researchers have found it difficult to systematically investigate the richness of multimodal communication due to its theoretical and technical complexity. To help overcome some of the technical hurdles, we introduce an open-source single-platform solution: the MultiSOCIAL (Multimodal timeSeries Open-SourCe Interaction Analysis Library) Toolbox. The Toolbox enables any researcher who has video files to extract time-series data in three modalities: body movement t

Lived experiences of female second-cycle students with abnormal menstrual cycle in a selected municipality of Ghana: A phenomenological qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Menstruation can be accompanied by stressful experiences and one such experience is the abnormal menstrual cycle, which could include menstrual irregularity and painful menstruation. Menstrual irregularity is defined as deviations in cycle length, frequency, or flow and can occur at any age, but it is most common among young women, often school-going children. Lack of understanding of abnormal menstruation often exposes young girls to adverse health outcomes. There is limited qualitative evidence on the lived experiences, beliefs, and coping strategies of secondary-school girls exp
