Infarct hemisphere and noninfarcted brain volumes affect locomotor performance following stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Brain damage within the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory is particularly disruptive to mediolateral postural stabilization. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to test the hypothesis that chronic right MCA infarcts (as compared to left) are associated with slower and more bilaterally asymmetrical gait. We further hypothesized that in those with chronic right MCA infarct, locomotor performance is more dependent on gray matter (GM) volumes within noninfarcted regions of the brain that are involved in motor control yet lie outside of the MCA territory. METHODS:

Normative values of skin temperature and thermal sensory thresholds in the pudendal nerve territory.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to define normative values of skin temperature and thermal sensory threshold in the pudendal nerve territory. METHODS: Warm and cold detection thresholds (using the method of limits) and skin temperature were measured in a group of 41 presumably healthy female volunteers aged 41 years (range: 23-66 years) at left thenar eminence and in the pudendal nerve territory. Outlying data were discarded and 95% normative values were derived assuming Normal distributions. RESULTS: Room temperature averaged 24.3 ± 1.1°. Skin temperature and cold detection threshold value

A DTI-based tractography study of effects on brain structure associated with prenatal alcohol exposure in newborns.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is known to have severe, long-term consequences for brain and behavioral development already detectable in infancy and childhood. Resulting features of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders include cognitive and behavioral effects, as well as facial anomalies and growth deficits. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tractography were used to analyze white matter (WM) development in 11 newborns (age since conception <45 weeks) whose mothers were recruited during pregnancy. Comparisons were made with nine age-matched controls born to abstainers or light drinkers from the

Long-term plasticity in adult somatosensory cortex: functional reorganization after surgical removal of an arteriovenous malformation.

The temporal scale of neuroplasticity following acute alterations in brain structure due to neurosurgical intervention is still under debate. We conducted a longitudinal study with the objective of investigating the postoperative changes in a patient who underwent cerebrovascular surgery and who subsequently lost proprioception in the fingers of her right hand. The results show increased activation in contralesional somatosensory areas, additional recruitment of premotor and posterior parietal areas, and changes in functional connectivity with left postcentral gyrus. These findings demonstrate

Hip range of motion and association with injury in female professional tennis players.

BACKGROUND: Adequate hip range of motion is required for the transfer of energy from the lower to the upper extremity along the kinetic chain. Repetitive rotational stresses in the lower extremities during tennis may lead to sport-specific range of motion adaptations, which may increase the risk of injury to other joints along the kinetic chain. PURPOSE: To assess whether such range of motion adaptations occur in the hip, and if so, to identify whether they are associated with injury. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A total of 125 female professional tenn

What's special about task in dystonia? A voxel-based morphometry and diffusion weighted imaging study.

Numerous brain imaging studies have demonstrated structural changes in the basal ganglia, thalamus, sensorimotor cortex, and cerebellum across different forms of primary dystonia. However, our understanding of brain abnormalities contributing to the clinically well-described phenomenon of task specificity in dystonia remained limited. We used high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with voxel-based morphometry and diffusion weighted imaging with tract-based spatial statistics of fractional anisotropy to examine gray and white matter organization in two task-specific dystonia forms, wr

Neural simulation of actions: effector- versus action-specific motor maps within the human premotor and posterior parietal area?

This study addresses the controversy over how motor maps are organized during action simulation by examining whether action simulation states, that is, motor imagery and action observation, run on either effector-specific and/or action-specific motor maps. Subjects had to observe or imagine three types of movements effected by the right hand or the right foot with different action goals. The functional magnetic resonance imaging results showed an action-specific organization within premotor and posterior parietal areas of both hemispheres during action simulation, especially during action obse

Left parietal TMS disturbs priming between symbolic and non-symbolic number representations.

An amodal number representation activated by all types of numerical input, irrespective of the input notation, has often been proposed to be located in the left or right intraparietal sulcus (IPS). Two cross-notational priming experiments were carried out to test the existence of a notation-independent magnitude representation in the left or right parietal lobes. In Experiment 1, stimuli were Arabic digits and number words. Results revealed no significant effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over left or right IPS during prime presentation. In contrast, in Experiment 2

Role of posterior parietal cortex in reaching movements in humans: clinical implication for 'optic ataxia'.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the spatio-temporal profile of cortical activity related to reaching movement in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in humans. METHODS: Four patients with intractable partial epilepsy who underwent subdural electrode implantation were studied as a part of pre-surgical evaluation. We investigated the Bereitschaftspotential (BP) associated with reaching and correlated the findings with the effect of electrical stimulation of the same cortical area. RESULTS: BPs specific for reaching, as compared with BPs for simple movements by the hand or arm contralateral to the implan

The importance of encoding-related neural dynamics in the prediction of inter-individual differences in verbal working memory performance.

Studies of brain-behaviour interactions in the field of working memory (WM) have associated WM success with activation of a fronto-parietal network during the maintenance stage, and this mainly for visuo-spatial WM. Using an inter-individual differences approach, we demonstrate here the equal importance of neural dynamics during the encoding stage, and this in the context of verbal WM tasks which are characterized by encoding phases of long duration and sustained attentional demands. Participants encoded and maintained 5-word lists, half of them containing an unexpected word intended to distur

A novel electrodiagnostic assessment of the laryngeal closure reflex.

INTRODUCTION: We describe a novel, clinically applicable conduction study of the laryngeal nerves. METHODS: Seventeen normal volunteer subjects were included. Activation of the sensory territory of the superior laryngeal nerve was performed by administration of low level brief electrical stimuli. The laryngeal closure reflex (LCR) evoked by this stimulus was recorded by needle electrodes. Mean minimal latencies were calculated for each response, and proposed values for the upper limit of normal were determined. RESULTS: Uniform, consistent early ipsilateral responses and late bilateral respo

[Subependymoma of the lateral ventricle. A case report].

INTRODUCTION. Intracranial subependymomas are rare, slow-growing, noninvasive, benign tumors. They are most often located in the fourth ventricle. Most of these tumors are discovered incidentally during autopsy. Routine medical checkups using neuroimaging techniques have increased their diagnosis. Subependymomas may present with symptoms related to cerebrospinal fluid obstruction or mass effect. CASE REPORT. A 52-year-old man presented with severe headache and mental deterioration with memory disturbances and bradypsychia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass in t

Right cerebral hemisphere and central auditory processing in children with developmental dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that if the right hemisphere auditory processing abilities can be altered in children with developmental dyslexia (DD), we can detect dysfunction using specific tests. METHOD: We performed an analytical comparative cross-sectional study. We studied 20 right-handed children with DD and 20 healthy right-handed control subjects (CS). Children in both groups were age, gender, and school-grade matched. Focusing on the right hemisphere's contribution, we utilized tests to measure alterations in central auditory processing (CAP), such as determination of frequency patterns

Bilateral posterior ischaemic optic neuropathy after severe diabetic ketoacidosis, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and respiratory failure.

A 44-year-old male European with type I diabetes mellitus fell into diabetic ketoacidosis. In the emergency room, he developed an episode of asystole and respiratory failure requiring one cycle of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Waking up 7 days later, he presented a bilateral complete loss of vision. Ophthalmological examination including funduscopy on days 1 and 10, after extubation, showed bilateral large round pupils non-reactive to light and a normal fundus. Neuroimaging studies, including MRI and MRA of the brain, were all within normal limit

Eliciting health state utilities for Dupuytren's contracture using a discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: An internet-based discrete choice experiment (DCE) was conducted to elicit preferences for a wide range of Dupuytren's contracture (DC)-related health states. An algorithm was subsequently developed to convert these preferences into health state utilities that can be used to assess DC's impact on quality of life and the value of its treatments. METHODS: Health state preferences for varying levels of DC hand severity were elicited via an internet survey from a sample of the UK adult population. Severity levels were defined using a combination of contractures (0, 45, or

Endovascular treatment of complicated ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysms based on the anatomical features of the anterior communicating artery complex.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular therapy of complicated ruptured anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysms is difficult due to their small size and unfavorable shape. AIM: Based on the anatomical features of the ACoA complex, we investigated the feasibility and efficacy of different coil embolism strategies for complicated ACoA aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with complicated ruptured ACoA aneurysms received endovascular treatment. Aneurysm sac plus ACoA embolism or ACoA coil embolism were performed if the bilateral A1 segment was normally developed or unilateral A1 segment d

A pathway in the brainstem for roll-tilt of the subjective visual vertical: evidence from a lesion-behavior mapping study.

The perceived subjective visual vertical (SVV) is an important sign of a vestibular otolith tone imbalance in the roll plane. Previous studies suggested that unilateral pontomedullary brainstem lesions cause ipsiversive roll-tilt of SVV, whereas pontomesencephalic lesions cause contraversive roll-tilts of SVV. However, previous data were of limited quality and lacked a statistical approach. We therefore tested roll-tilt of the SVV in 79 human patients with acute unilateral brainstem lesions due to stroke by applying modern statistical lesion-behavior mapping analysis. Roll-tilt of the SVV was
