Aquablation versus laser enucleation of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia: a systematic review and pairwise meta-analysis of head-to-head studies including the first randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Holmium/thulium laser enucleation of the prostate (LEP) is an established, size-independent surgical option for benign prostatic hyperplasia, while Aquablation is an emerging robotic waterjet therapy. Until recently, the two had never been compared in a randomized head-to-head trial, and the only prior quantitative synthesis relied on an indirect, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)-anchored network comparison. We conducted the first pairwise meta-analysis restricted to studies directly comparing Aquablation and LEP, incorporating the first partially randomized head-to-h

Efficacy and Safety of Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Compared to Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in the Treatment of Psychiatric & Neurological Disorders: A Systematic Review of Head-to-head Trials.

Transcranial direct and alternating current simulations (tDCS and tACS) are non-invasive neuromodulators with emerging evidence in neuropsychiatric disorders. This review compares their efficacy and tolerability in head-on trials. Following PRISMA guidelines, 955 studies were identified from Scopus, MEDLINE, and trial registries. After screening and reviewing abstracts and full texts by 2 independent authors, 11 studies comparing tACS and tDCS in neuropsychiatric disorders were included. Four studies in schizophrenia, 1 each in depression, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and ataxia; 2 in tinn

Healthcare professionals understanding, perceptions and experiences of head and neck lymphoedema to promote self-management for patients following completion of head and neck cancer treatment: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Head and neck lymphoedema (HNL) is a chronic and often debilitating consequence of head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment. Despite the chronicity, it is often under-recognised and under-treated. There is a finite resource of specialists to provide HNL intervention, necessitating self-management as an important pillar of patient management. This study aims to explore healthcare professionals (HCPs) understanding, perceptions and experiences of HNL management to promote self-management and adherence to HNL interventions in patients following completion of HNC treatment. METHODS: Eight fo

Evaluation of Pepsinogen I, II, Gastrin 17 and Helicobacter pylori IgG in Atrophic Gastritis: A Head-To-Head Comparison of Lateral Flow and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays.

BACKGROUND: A lateral flow assay (LFA) incorporating several biomarkers, including pepsinogen I (PGI), pepsinogen II (PGII), Gastrin-17 (G-17), and Helicobacter pylori IgG, enables the rapid non-invasive detection of atrophic gastritis (AG). However, its diagnostic performance compared to conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has not been established. METHODS: This head-to-head comparison study included participants from a prospective and multicenter cohort. Patients with gastric premalignant lesions underwent endoscopy, and fasting serum samples were collected for biomarker

Measuring the outward migration of the nasotracheal tube at vocal cords with head and neck extension: a novel approach using a flexible bronchoscope in patients undergoing head and neck oncosurgery.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck extension achieves optimal surgical exposure during head and neck oncosurgeries. However, it can lead to cephalad migration of the tracheal tube, causing complications. Preventing shallow intubation is essential, especially in patients with difficult airway. Using an innovative technique, we aimed to measure the proximal migration of the nasotracheal tube at the vocal cords on neck extension in patients with difficult airway. METHODS: We enrolled 60 adult patients undergoing head and neck oncosurgeries with a mouth opening of less than 1.5 cm. After nasotracheal intu

Large Femoral Heads in Total Hip Arthroplasty With Vitamin E Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene: Head Penetration Rates Compared to Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene.

BACKGROUND: Highly cross-linked polyethylene with vitamin E (VE-HXLPE) has shown superior tribological properties and has been rapidly adopted in total hip arthroplasty. However, the majority of studies compare VE-HXLPE to conventional or moderately cross-linked polyethylene using standard femoral head sizes. This study's purpose was 2-fold: (1) compare radiographic femoral head penetration (FHP) between VE-HXLPE and HXLPE and (2) evaluate FHP in large femoral heads ≥40 mm. METHODS: One hundred forty-two consecutive primary total hip arthroplasties using ceramic femoral heads (n = 84 VE-HXLPE

Intraoperative nerve monitoring is used routinely by a significant majority of head and neck surgeons in thyroid surgery and impacts on extent of surgery-Survey of the American Head and Neck Society.

BACKGROUND: The data on the advantages of intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) during thyroid surgeries is inconsistent. Our objective was to study the patterns of use of IONM in thyroid surgery among American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) members. METHOD: A web-based survey was e-mailed to all members of the AHNS. RESULTS: A total of 275 surgeons completed the survey. Seventy-two percent reported using IONM routinely. Routine use of IONM was associated with longer period in practice. Twenty-one percent only used IONM selectively in high-risk cases. Most surgeons would consider aborting the

Definitive chemoradiotherapy in patients with squamous cell cancers of the head and neck - results from an unselected cohort of the clinical cooperation group "Personalized Radiotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer".

BACKGROUND: Definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT) is a standard treatment for patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer. There is a clinical need for a stratification of this prognostically heterogeneous group of tumors in order to optimize treatment of individual patients. We retrospectively reviewed all patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx, treated with dCRT from 09/2008 until 03/2016 at the Department of Radiation Oncology, LMU Munich. Here we report the clinical results of the cohort which represent the b
