Determinants of stillbirth among reviewed perinatal deaths in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of stillbirth has declined over time. However, the problem is still prominent in South Asian and Sub-Saharan African countries. Ethiopia is one of the top stillbirth-reporting countries worldwide. Despite several measures taken to reduce the burden of stillbirth; the pace of decline was not as good as the post-neonatal death. Thus, this study is aimed at identifying potential factors related to stillbirth in Ethiopia based on nationally reviewed perinatal deaths. METHOD: The national perinatal death surveillance data were used for this study. A total of 3,814 rev

Quality improvement program for transfusion reaction reporting and management.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion reactions are underreported, with reported rates up to 87% lower than expected for serious reactions such as transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO). We implemented a multicomponent quality improvement initiative to improve recognition and reporting of transfusion reactions. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The initiative combined standardized nursing education with an electronic medical record (EMR)-integrated structured workflow, the Care Signature Transfusion Reaction Pathway, to standardize recognition, evaluation, and management of suspected reactions. We also

Instruments that measure evidence-based practice knowledge, skills, and attitudes among health professions students: A systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is recognized as a foundational element of health professional education worldwide. The Sicily Statement is a five-step model for both clinical practice and teaching EPB: Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply, Audit (or evaluate) [Dawes M, et al. BMC Med Educ. 5(1):1 (2005)]. Evaluating EBP competence in health professions' students is critical to develop strategies that build that competence and ultimately lead to optimal patient care. RATIONALE: There are many EBP measurement instruments that have been identified in previous reviews, but none that were inte

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate factors associated with SAH in postmenopausal women participating in a resistance training program. METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study included 55 postmenopausal women (66.0 ± 4.9 years) recruited from the "More Active Women" research project, an umbrella experimental and longitudinal study involving resistance training interventions. Digital health and rural health workforce retention: mapping workforce retention pathways.

Digital health is increasingly promoted to address rural health and care workforce shortages. However, its workforce consequences are usually evaluated through implementation or service-delivery outcomes rather than the conditions that enable rural workers to remain, develop, and practice sustainably. We conducted a Joanna Briggs Institute-informed scoping review reported according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. The protocol was prospectively registered on the Open Science Framework. Five databases were searched for studies

Examining the mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on late-adolescent learners in the Western Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly disrupted education in South Africa, yet quantitative investigations into its mental health impact among learners in late adolescence remain scarce. This study examined associations between COVID-19-related cognitive appraisals and psychological outcomes among late-adolescent learners (aged 18-19 years), a group navigating the transition to adulthood amid substantial educational and social uncertainty. METHOD: A convenience sample of 239 late-adolescent learners (mean age = 18.13 years; 72% female) from seven public schools in informal and semi-urb

"I am proud to be a midwife because I save a lot of lives": survey and interviews with graduates of International Medical Corps' midwifery education programme in South Sudan.

South Sudan has extremely high maternal mortality, driven, in part, by an underfunded health system and a shortage of trained health workers. Skilled birth attendants are essential to reducing maternal mortality. International Medical Corps supports competency-based midwifery education in three schools in South Sudan, offering a 2.5-year certificate and a 3-year diploma aligned with international standards for midwifery practice. A mixed-methods evaluation was conducted to assess the strengths and challenges of the midwifery education programme to inform programme improvement. This manuscript

Evaluating Interstitial Cystitis Content on TikTok: A Cross-sectional Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a common, stigmatizing, and poorly understood condition. With more people turning to TikTok for health information, it is important to assess the quality of IC/BPS-related content on this platform, which has not been studied to date. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to evaluate how IC/BPS is discussed on TikTok, assess the quality of the information provided, and determine the utility of these videos as patient education tools. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional, content analysis study using a web scra

Including "sexual" in sexual and reproductive health labor: Gendered experiences of sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, testing, and treatment among young people in Texas.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the U.S. have been persistently high for over a decade, and they disproportionately burden young people. Yet limited qualitative research has explored how young people understand, navigate, and experience STIs amid this ongoing epidemic. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 33 young people (ages 15-25) across Texas, this study examines the gendered dynamics of STI prevention, testing, and treatment through a reproductive labor framework. Findings reveal adolescent girls and young women assume the majority of sexual health labor: managing prevention, ini

Developing antenatal education resources for CALD women: First steps, exploring what women from CALD backgrounds want and need.

PROBLEM: There are significant health risks for women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds accessing perinatal care. BACKGROUND: Disparity exists for accessing perinatal care. In Australia, women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds have higher rates of obstetric complications compared to others. Reasons are often complex and multifactorial. Low health literacy is commonly reported amongst CALD communities as a contributor to reduced antenatal care participation and utilisation, compromising recognition of pregnancy complications, and understanding o

Minorities' Diminished Psychedelic Returns: Income and Educations Impact on Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians.

Growing evidence suggests that the race and ethnic minority population may experience fewer protective effects of psychedelics on mental health. The minority diminished psychedelic returns theory proposes that racism, manifested in socioeconomic inequality, could partially account for the smaller health gains observed. Therefore, it is important to investigate whether socioeconomic inequality reduces the impact of psychedelics on health outcomes for minority populations. Additionally, despite having higher socioeconomic status, it remains unclear whether psychedelic use among minorities is ass

Move to improve - Prescribing physical activity and deprescribing paracetamol for low back pain: Protocol for a hybrid type III feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing low back pain (LBP) could potentially benefit from multimedia educational resources that integrate self-management strategies and improve awareness of the benefits of staying active and about medications that offer limited benefits, such as paracetamol. Primary care waiting rooms are potential spaces for presenting health promotion resources to improve health literacy through the dissemination of easily accessible health information. This feasibility study aims to explore the feasibility of conducting a large-scale trial to investigate the benefits of multimed

Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores of Veterans and Canadian Armed Forces personnel seeking mental health treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a widely used screening tool for mild cognitive impairment and is often used by health care providers working with Canadian Veterans for assessment of pension adjudication purposes. However, MoCA research with Veterans is limited. This study aimed to support clinical interpretation of the MoCA by describing test performance among 208 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel and Veterans seeking mental health treatment. METHODS: Participants were Veterans (n = 189; 90.9%) and serving CAF personnel (n = 19; 9.1%) presenting to an operationa
