Insights into the effects of substrate stacking, hydrogen passivation and carrier gas design on edge-vacancy sealing in h-BN growth.

Edge-vacancy sealing as the first step of row growth is critical for high-quality hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) synthesis. Using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, we investigated the finite-temperature dynamics of vacancy sealing at zigzag N-terminated (ZZN) edges on Cu (111) by atomic N, NH and NH2 radicals. Different stacking configurations lead to different types of quantum-mechanical coupling between Cu atoms and vacancy environments, thus influencing the sealing efficiency. In addition, hydrogen passivation improves the sealing of atomic N and NH radicals, while NH2 radica

CO and CO2 Hydrogenation over CeO2 and CeO2-Based Composite Catalysts: Defect Chemistry, Interfacial Sites and Selectivity Control.

CO and CO2 hydrogenation provide essential routes for linking carbon resource recycling with renewable hydrogen utilization, yet the predictable design of CeO2-based catalysts remains constrained by an incomplete understanding of how CeO2 defect chemistry couples with interfacial reaction pathways. This review adopts a function-oriented rather than a metal-by-metal enumeration approach, covering pristine CeO2, single-metal/CeO2, bimetallic/CeO2, and CeO2-metal oxide composite catalysts. We argue that CeO2 should not be viewed merely as an oxygen vacancy reservoir; its catalytic function arises

Catalytic Photothermal Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide to Liquid Fuels using Pt/GaN Prepared via Surface Organometallic Chemistry.

Renewable liquid fuels are expected to play a crucial role in transitioning to a more sustainable future. Their synthesis via the hydrogenation of CO2 using solar energy emerges as a promising technology, combining both the utilisation of a renewable primary energy source and the (re)utilisation of a major greenhouse gas. In this context, GaN has attracted a lot of attention in harnessing solar energy to drive chemical transformations. In this work, we study GaN by 1H solid-state NMR spectroscopy, revealing the presence of terminal Ga-OH, bridging Ga-NH-Ga, as well as Ga-OH-Ga surface function

Unlocking Methane Generation via Photo-Thermal-Coupled CO2 Hydrogenation by Integrating FeNiCrMnCo Multicomponent Alloy with GaN Nanowires.

The exploration of a noble-metal-free photo-thermal-coupled catalytic architecture plays a vital role in solar-driven conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value fuels and chemicals. In this study, FeNiCrMnCo multicomponent alloy (MCA) is integrated with GaN nanowires (NW's) for photo-thermal-coupled catalytic CO2 methanation. The MCA/GaN NW's nanohybrid demonstrates a considerable methane production rate of 199 mmol∙g-1∙h-1 with an impressive selectivity of 93% under white light irradiation of 3 W∙cm-2 at 290 °C by external heating. The turnover number approaches 20,160 mole CH4 per mo

Pd/C-Catalyzed Tandem Synthesis of β-Amino Alcohol Using Epoxide through Transfer Hydrogenation of Nitroarene with Methanol.

Using commercially available Pd/C as a catalyst, β-amino alcohols are synthesized from nitroarenes and 1,2-epoxides. Nitroarenes are transformed to amines through ring opening of epoxides and transfer hydrogenation of methanol over the Pd/C catalyst, producing β-amino alcohols. This approach generates aniline in situ from nitrobenzene, making it a viable alternative to traditional β-amino alcohol synthesis procedures. This technique has advantages, including easy recovery of catalysts through filtration and elimination of the requirement for intermediate separation.

Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Cu NWs@ZrO2 as a Highly Selective Catalyst for Methanol Synthesis from CO2 Hydrogenation.

CO2 hydrogenation is one of the key technologies for carbon recycling and greenhouse effect mitigation. Cu-based catalysts have been widely used in the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. However, the low catalytic efficiency and instability of Cu-based catalysts limit their industrial application. Herein, a Zr-based metal-organic framework was used to synthesize a Cu NWs@ZrO2 catalyst with a Cu-ZrO2 interface. The Cu NWs@ZrO2 catalyst shows high activity with promising selectivity and excellent stability for the synthesis of methanol from CO2 hydrogenation. Density functional theory calculation

Exploring the effect of external electric fields on the hydrogen bonding of a methanol dimer and fluorinated methanol dimers: a quantum chemical investigation.

It is well established that external electric fields (EEFs) influence the H-bond network of liquid methanol and methanol clusters and induce proton transfer reactions. In this paper, a detailed ab initio study of the structural changes and energetics in the methanol dimer and its fluorine substituted dimers under the influence of EEFs of varying strengths is performed by employing density functional theory (DFT) and coupled-cluster with singles and doubles (CCSD) theory. The geometries are optimized using a wide variety of DFT functionals, spanning from the GGA (revPBE) functional to hybrid GG

In-situ synthesis of interfacial In-O-Mn lewis acid-base pairs for low-temperature photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

CO2 hydrogenation into methanol suffers from a huge obstacle of low methanol yield due to the leverage effect of CO2 conversion and methanol selectivity. Here, we report an In2O3-MnCO3 catalyst consisting of In2O3 covalently linked to MnCO3 for efficiently photothermal CO2 hydrogenation into methanol. Covalent linkage, the O atoms of In2O3 occupy the oxygen vacancies of MnCO3, enables the formation of In-O-Mn Lewis acid-base pairs at the In2O3-MnCO3 interface. Both light irradiations and heatings improve the electron excitations and transfers from In to O, promoting CO2 activation and methanol

Metal organic framework derived In2O3/ZrO2 heterojunctions with interfacial oxygen vacancies for highly selective CO2-to-methanol hydrogenation.

The hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol is a promising route for carbon capture and utilization, however achieving high selectivity and productivity remains a challenge. This study presents a novel catalyst synthesized by pyrolyzing a zirconium-based metal-organic framework impregnated with indium, yielding ultrafine In2O3 nanoparticles uniformly embedded within a ZrO2 and carbon matrix. The resulting In2O3/ZrO2 heterojunction exhibited abundant oxygen vacancies at the interface, which is crucial for enhancing the catalytic performance. Under gas-phase conditions, the catalyst achieves an excepti

A photo-triggered dual-gas donor of nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide with fluorescence for real-time monitoring of its release.

Multi-gaseous signal molecules play a significant role in regulating various physiological and pathological processes. Therefore, studying the synergistic effects of multi-gas donors on biological systems is essential. However, different types of gas donors vary significantly in terms of gas release, including location, dose, and flux. These variations can have a dramatic impact on the biological effects of the gases and require further analysis for confirmation. Thus, a controllable dual-gas donor that enables self-reporting would be valuable for studying the biological effects of two species

Synthesis and Characterization of Undoped and Strontium-Doped Zinc Ferrites for Applications of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation.

This study aims to synthesize and characterize the undoped and strontium-doped spinel zinc ferrites for the application of cathode material in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and photocatalytic hydrogen generation through sodium borohydride (NaBH4) methanolysis. Composite strontium iron zinc-based SOFC cathode materials are fabricated by the Sol-Gel technique. XRD patterns collected from powders that were prepared by calcining the gels at 800°C confirmed the presence of pure franklinite (ferrites) material for the undoped material. Scanning electron microscopic images depicted compact and distin

Endogenous Hydrogen Sulphide Promotes the Ex Vivo Expansion of Haematopoietic Stem Cells by Regulating the Activation of the JAK2/STAT3 Pathway.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is one of the key strategies for treating various haematologic malignancies. Although there are haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in umbilical cord blood (UCB), the number is limited. Thus, the purpose of this work was to investigate if endogenous hydrogen sulphide (H2S) could encourage the ex vivo expansion of HSCs produced from UCB (UCB-HSCs). The CD34+ and CD34+CD38- cells were enriched and separated by immunomagnetic beads. UCB-HSCs were treated with overexpression plasmids of β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), 3-mercaptopyruvate s

A lysosome targetable and acidic pH-activated fluorescent probe for two-photon imaging of hydrogen sulfide in live cells and animals.

The design strategy of targeted fluorescent probes usually involves modifying the probes with organelle-targeting groups, which then guide the probes to enter specific organelles by the traction of the targeting groups. However, the targeting ability of subcellular localization groups is not perfect, and the target analytes are not specifically distributed within the cells. Therefore, designing novel molecular fluorescent probes for highly specific and selective detection of target analytes within specific organelles is an important research direction that deserves attention. Although multiple

Electrocatalytic properties of a carbothermically obtained composite based on vanadium nitridophosphide in the hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction reactions.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are the key electrochemical processes of hydrogen energy. Transition metal phosphides, nitrides, carbides, chalcogenides and their composites are promising non-precious metal electrocatalysts for these processes. Catalysts based on so-called early d-metal compounds, particularly V, attract less attention compared to those based on late transition metals (Ni, Co, Fe, etc.), which can generally be explained by their less competitive catalytic characteristics. However, combining V-containing co

Competitive cyclization of ethyl trifluoroacetoacetate and methyl ketones with 1,3-diamino-2-propanol into hydrogenated oxazolo- and pyrimido-condensed pyridones.

The use of 1,3-diamino-2-propanol with competitive N- and O-nucleophilic centers in a three-component cyclization with ethyl 4,4,4-trifluoroacetoacetate and methyl ketones enables the synthesis to be carried out for octahydropyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidin-6-ones and hexahydrooxazolo[3,2-a]pyridin-5-ones, the preferential formation of which depends on the substituent in the methyl ketone component. Dual acid-base catalysis of the reactions with alkyl methyl ketones increases the regioselectivity in the synthesis of octahydropyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidinones. The cyclization with acetophenone is characterized

A Turn-On Fluorescent and Ratiometric Electrochemical Dual-Mode Probe for Hydrogen Peroxide Detection in Brain Microdialysates of Alzheimer's Disease Mice.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a pivotal reactive oxygen species (ROS), is closely linked to oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Herein, we report a dual-mode probe (Re-PS) integrating turn-on fluorescence and ratiometric electrochemistry for the selective detection of H2O2 in brain microdialysates of AD model mice. The probe is constructed using resorufin (Re) as a dual-signal reporter and a pentafluorobenzenesulfonyl (PS) group as the H2O2-responsive unit. Upon reaction with H2O2, the PS group undergoes nucleophilic substitution, leading to the release of Re; this pr

[The influence of dietary pattern on the production of volatile organic compounds in patients with hydrogen-producing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome].

Antibacterial therapy of the small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is not effective enough and has a high relapse rate after treatment. Diet is a well-modifiable factor that plays a major role in shaping the composition, diversity, metabolic activity and stability of the intestinal microbiota. Intestinal bacteria ferment undigested food residues to form species-specific carbon-chain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The aim of this research was to study possible correlations between dietary variables and the level of stool VOCs in patients with hydrogen-producing SIBO. Material and meth

TD-DFT analysis of excitation of the closed-form spironaphthopyran in methanol solution: The contribution of vibronic transitions and intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

A set of forty hybrid functionals, combined with a 6-31++G(d,p) basis set and an IEFPCM solvent description, was applied to calculate the S0→S1 excitation of the spironaphthopyran (SNP) photochromic compound. None of the hybrid functionals resulted in Cspiro-O bond cleavage upon optimization of the S1 excited state of the SNP, in contrast to the spiropyran BIPS which we studied earlier. At the same time, the deformations of the SNP during excitation turned out to be very small (in contrast to those for BIPS) which made it possible to calculate its vibronic absorption spectrum.
