PulseNet China, a model for future laboratory-based bacterial infectious disease surveillance in China.

Surveillance is critical for the prevention and control of infectious disease. China's real-time web-based infectious disease reporting system is a distinguished achievement. However, many aspects of the current China Infectious Disease Surveillance System do not yet meet the demand for timely outbreak detection and identification of emerging infectious disease. PulseNet, the national molecular typing network for foodborne disease surveillance was first established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States in 1995 and has proven valuable in the early detection of o

The tonsils revisited: review of the anatomical localization and histological characteristics of the tonsils of domestic and laboratory animals.

This paper gives an overview of the anatomical localization and histological characteristics of the tonsils that are present in ten conventional domestic animal species, including the sheep, goat, ox, pig, horse, dog, cat, rabbit, rat, and pigeon. Anatomical macrographs and histological images of the tonsils are shown. Six tonsils can be present in domestic animals, that is, the lingual, palatine, paraepiglottic, pharyngeal, and tubal tonsils and the tonsil of the soft palate. Only in the sheep and goat, all six tonsils are present. Proper tonsils are absent in the rat, and pigeon. In the rabb

Techniques for phenotyping coronary artery disease in the cardiac catheterization laboratory for applications in translational research.

The catheterization laboratory is an excellent resource for translational research projects requiring phenotypic analysis of coronary artery disease. Coronary angiography, a traditional method of quantifying coronary disease, remains useful for describing the extent and the severity of angiographic coronary disease but is limited by the fact that angiography only depicts the effect of atherosclerosis on the arterial lumen. For this reason, quantitative coronary angiography has been supplemented by intravascular ultrasound and other catheter-based techniques and non-invasive methods for studies

Cognitive deficits from a cerebellar tumour: a historical case report from Luria's Laboratory.

In 1964 an original case report from A.R. Luria's Laboratory of Neuropsychology was published in Cortex, being one of the first to draw a link between cerebellum and cognition, by highlighting the manifestation of 'pseudo-frontal' symptoms resulting from a cerebellar tumour. The findings of Luria and his team seem more consistent with modern views about cerebellar interactions with the frontal lobe and its contributions to behaviour than the views prevalent at the time of publication. The paper was originally submitted in Russian, and translated into Italian for its publication by Cortex. Howe

Clinical and laboratory features in acute generalized pustular psoriasis: a retrospective study of 34 patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute generalized pustular psoriasis (AGPP) is a rare variant of psoriasis that can be lethal without proper treatment. It can be caused by the withdrawal of corticosteroids and, among its extra-cutaneous manifestations, liver abnormalities are frequently under-reported or attributed to drugs. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and laboratory data, treatment options, and disease outcome in patients with AGPP and to search for significant differences between subgroups of these patients. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective analysis of the clinical files

Association of heart structure and function abnormalities with laboratory findings in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Conventional risk factors of coronary artery disease fail to explain the increased frequency of cardiovascular morbidity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The study was conducted to determine possible association between the heart structure and function abnormalities with established prognostic value assessed by non-invasive imaging techniques and markers of autoimmune and inflammatory phenomena typical for SLE. Echocardiography and single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT; Tc-99m-MIBI) at rest were performed in 60 SLE patients in a stable clinical condition of

A new laboratory radio frequency identification (RFID) system for behavioural tracking of marine organisms.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) devices are currently used to quantify several traits of animal behaviour with potential applications for the study of marine organisms. To date, behavioural studies with marine organisms are rare because of the technical difficulty of propagating radio waves within the saltwater medium. We present a novel RFID tracking system to study the burrowing behaviour of a valuable fishery resource, the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus L.). The system consists of a network of six controllers, each handling a group of seven antennas. That network was placed below

From the laboratory to the patient and back--an interview with Marc Mareel. Interview by Marc E. Bracke.

The career of Marc Mareel is a synthesis of scientific research and clinical activity. During his medical studies, he already made his first enthusiastic steps in research via experimental work on avian developmental biology. Later, during his training as a radiotherapist, he founded his own laboratory for experimental cancer research. There he built up his international reputation as a pioneer in invasion research. Although invasion is the hallmark of tumor malignancy, he also kept an open mind about invasion in non-cancer conditions, such as in placental behavior, developmental biology, immu

Implementation of a configurable laboratory information management system for use in cellular process development and manufacturing.

BACKGROUND AIMS: Regulatory requirements for the manufacturing of cell products for clinical investigation require a significant level of record-keeping, starting early in process development and continuing through to the execution and requisite follow-up of patients on clinical trials. Central to record-keeping is the management of documentation related to patients, raw materials, processes, assays and facilities. METHODS: To support these requirements, we evaluated several laboratory information management systems (LIMS), including their cost, flexibility, regulatory compliance, ongoing pro

The effect of peroral administration of toxic cyanobacteria on laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus var. alba).

OBJECTIVES: The toxic cyanobacteria are a serious problem for water supply systems, recreation, and agriculture. Cyanobacteria produce numerous bioactive compounds including microcystins - the most studied cyanobacterial hepatotoxins. Only rare studies addressed realistic situation, i.e. impact of MCs accumulated in the fish tissues on the overall physiology. The aim of the present study was to provide a model simulation of the simple food chain for evaluation of impacts of cyanobacteria on the rat physiology under different exposure scenario. METHODS: Experimental rats were fed with food wit

Design of Web-based Fuzzy Input Expert System for the analysis of serology laboratory tests.

In this study, it is aimed, using the Web-based Expert System with Fuzzy Input (WESFI), to convert the patients' (users') Serology Laboratory Tests (SLT) results to linguistic statements (low, normal, high) and analyzing those, give a feedback to the user (patient) of the potential signs of disease. The feedbacks given to the patients are the existing interpretations in the database, which were prepared by doctors before. Furthermore, the SLT terms (Brucella Coombs, Ama, P-Protein etc.) are explained in a way that the user can understand. The WESFI is published with an interface on the web env

Adapting spa typing for national laboratory-based surveillance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Laboratory-based surveillance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) monitors the baseline occurrence of different genotypes and identifies strains and transmission chains responsible for outbreaks. The consequences of substituting pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with spa typing as a first-line typing method were analyzed by typing 589 strains isolated between 1997 and 2006, with a focus on both short- and long-term correspondence between the PFGE and spa typing results. The study, covering these ten years, included all Finnish MRSA blood isolates and representatives of

[Genotype-related changes in the reproductive function under social hierarchy in laboratory male mice].

The study was designed to investigate genetic differences in reproductive consequences of social hierarchy using inbred mice strains BALB/cLac, PT and CBA/Lac. Two adult males of different genotypes were housed together for 5 days. Hierarchical status of both partners was determined by asymmetry in agonistic behavior. The number of epididymal sperm and a proportion of abnormal sperm, weights of reproductive organs, serum concentration and testicular content of testosterone, and the testosterone response to introduction of a receptive female were determined. The testosterone measures were signi

A critical review of laboratory-based studies examining the relationships of social anxiety and alcohol intake.

Research has revealed inconsistencies regarding the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol use. The goal of the current review is to examine lab-based studies that have been conducted in an attempt to help disentangle the social anxiety - alcohol link. Specifically, this review focuses on the most prominent theories present in this area of research, namely, the Tension Reduction Theory, the Stress-Response Dampening Model, the Self-Awareness Model, the Attention Allocation Model, and the Appraisal-Disruption Model. The review then describes the empirical studies that have been conduct
