False positive EBNA IgM and IgG antibody tests for infectious mononucleosis in children.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the reliability of the Monolert test, a new enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the diagnosis of acute infectious mononucleosis (IM). DESIGN: A retrospective laboratory and clinical analysis of 38 children diagnosed with acute IM. SETTING: A suburban pediatric practice in Connecticut. PATIENTS: Thirty-eight children (ages 18 months to 17 years) who were diagnosed with acute IM using the Monolert test during the period October 1992 to August 1993. RESULTS: Eighty-three percent of these children had no evidence of Epstein-Barr virus infection on subsequent investigati

Vaccination in murine schistosomiasis with adult worm derived antigens--II. Protective and immune response in inbred mice.

Previous work in our laboratory, mainly focused the prospects of achieving resistance against Schistosoma mansoni infection with adult worm-derived antigens in the form of a soluble extract (SE). This extract obtained by incubation of living adult schistosomes in saline, contains a large number of distinct molecules and was actually shown to be significantly protective in different outbred animals models such as Swiss mice and rabbits. It thus appeared worthwhile to investigate the potential protective activity of SE in different inbred strains of mice, known to be highly susceptible to the in

Elbow pain.

Nonarticular causes of elbow pain include muscle strains, ligamentous injuries, epicondylitis, olecranon bursitis, and compressive neuropathies. Overuse and trauma commonly cause these conditions. The history and physical examination differentiate them from an intra-articular process such as synovitis. Laboratory analysis of fluid aspirated from a swollen olecranon bursa is necessary to differentiate infection or gout. X-rays are useful in avulsion fracture, osteochondritis dissecans, and epiphyseal separation. Electromyography with nerve conduction velocities can localize the site of nerve en

Protection of chicks against salmonella infection induced by spray application of intestinal microflora in the hatchery.

The efficacy of spray application of intestinal microflora of the adult bird in protection of broilers against salmonella infections was studied in 3 experiments under laboratory and field conditions. In chicks treated soon after hatching (in the hatchers at approximately 30 per cent hatch or in the chick delivery boxes in the hatchery) with crop-caecum homogenate or a mixture of aerobically and strict anaerobically cultured intestinal flora, very good results were achieved. A very obvious protective effect against a high infection dose (3 X 10(6) c.f.u.S. infantis bacteria per chick) and comp

Mousepox (infectious ectromelia): past, present, and future.

Mousepox is an orthopoxvirus infection of mice that was discovered in laboratory mice in England in 1930. Depending upon mouse genotype, it may produce a severe disease with acute hepatitis and high mortality, a generalized rash in animals that survive longer, or a trivial inapparent infection. It has long been enzootic in breeding stocks of mice in Europe, Japan, and China but not in North America and Australia. However, it has been imported into the USA on several occasions, sometimes causing severe epizootics. It may contaminate or replace various viruses that are passaged in mice and may b

Serum ferritin in the diagnosis of anemia during pregnancy.

Measurements of serum ferritin were correlated with bone marrow iron content and other laboratory hematological indices in 44 anemic (B-Hb < 110 g/l) pregnant women. Seventy-two % of patients classified as iron deficient by the absence of bone marrow iron had diagnostically low serum ferritin concentrations, which percentage is about double compared with those revealed by measurements of serum transferrin, TIBC, transferrin saturation, serum iron, blood hemoglobin and red cell indices. It is also important that serum ferritin was the only one of these measurements which was able to differentia

The epidemiology of St. Louis encephalitis in Dallas, Texas, 1966.

An epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) occurred in Dallas, Texas, in the summer of 1966. A total of 545 suspected cases within Dallas city and county were reported, of which 145 were laboratory-confirmed as SLE virus infection. The greatest concentration of cases occurred in lower socioeconomic areas of the central part of the city in black populations. The attack rate and mortality rate increased markedly with age. The overall attack rate was 15.2 per 100,000, with a case fatality rate of 9.7%. During the course of the epidemic, most of the county was sprayed aerially with an ultra-low v

Challenges in the Diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in an Adolescent With Sexually Transmitted Infections: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is often referred to as the great imitator, as it can mimic the presentation of several diseases, including infections. We present the case of an 18-year-old male adolescent with clinical and laboratory findings of SLE who was later found to have concurrent syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. Diagnosis of these concurrent infections was complicated by symptom overlap between these diseases, primarily between SLE, HIV, and syphilis, as well as positive autoantibody tests. Treatment for lupus was stopped after infe

Curvularia spicifera in Non-Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis: Case Reports and Diagnostic Insights.

The clinical cases described in this text add to the limited literature on chronic and allergic rhinosinusitis caused by dematiaceous fungi, particularly Curvularia spicifera. These cases highlight the growing recognition of fungal infections as a significant factor in the etiology of rhinosinusitis, a condition traditionally attributed to bacterial causes It has become evident that a comprehensive clinical approach, involving diagnostic imaging and laboratory examinations, particularly culture-based analysis, has been crucial in identifying the specific fungal pathogen responsible for the inf

Infectivity of Symptomatic Malaria Patients to Anopheles farauti Colony Mosquitoes in Papua New Guinea.

Plasmodium transmission from humans to mosquitoes is an understudied bottleneck in the transmission of malaria. Direct membrane feeding assays (DMFA) allow detailed malaria transmission studies from humans to mosquitoes. Especially for Plasmodium vivax, which cannot be cultured long-term under laboratory conditions, implementation of DMFAs requires proximity to P. vivax endemic areas. In this study, we investigated the infectivity of symptomatic Plasmodium infections to Anopheles farauti colony mosquitoes in Papua New Guinea (PNG). A total of 182 DMFAs were performed with venous blood collecte

Hepatitis E virus.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is responsible for major outbreaks of acute hepatitis in developing countries where it was first described as a waterborne disease, transmitted by drinking water contaminated with feces. Attention was focused on HEV in developed countries and its associated diseases in recent years as a result of increasing reports of autochthonous infections. Hepatitis E is the zoonotic cause of these acute infections, and mainly in men over 50 years of age. The clinical manifestations and laboratory abnormalities of hepatitis E infections in immunocompetent patients cannot be distingu

Emerging and re-emerging viral infections in Europe.

Emerging viral infections are becoming a serious problem in Europe in the recent years. This is particularly true for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), West Nile virus (WNV) disease, Toscana virus (TOSV) disease, and potentially for avian influenza virus (H5N1). In contrast, emergence or re-emergence of severe viral infections, including tick borne encephalitis virus, and viral haemorrhagic fever caused by Hantavirus and dengue virus have been frequently reported in several European countries. Laboratory diagnosis of these viral infections based on viral isolation or detection by immun

Hepatitis C infection in children with haemophilia: a pilot study.

Many haemophilia patients were infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) in childhood after transfusion with inadequately or non-virus inactivated clotting factor products. Limited information is available on the clinical course of HCV infection in children. To assess the clinical consequences of hepatitis C in these young patients we performed a pilot study of 31 patients with haemophilia, infected with HCV before the age of 13. Current median age was 20 years. Nineteen (61%) patients had chronic hepatitis C, whereas the remaining 12 patients spontaneously cleared HCV. The median duration of infe

Community-acquired infections among children in an urban environment: a 2-year prospective study in Liverpool, U.K.

Community-acquired infections are an important cause of admission of children to hospital. We have made a 2-year prospective study of 1,599 children admitted with infection to the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital in order to determine the pattern of infections, their seasonal distribution and the role of the laboratory in isolating causative agents. Respiratory infections (32% cases) and gastroenteritis (28% cases) were the principal causes of admission. Of all admissions, 64% were children aged less than 1 year. Appropriate specimens were obtained and/or investigations made of 48% cases. O

A longitudinal evaluation of localised chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in cystic fibrosis rat models.

Recurrent bacterial infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa result in chronic airway inflammation, lung damage and eventual respiratory failure, and are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Animal models are essential for understanding disease progression and assessing potential treatments in the presence of infection. Previously reported P. aeruginosa lung infection rodent models for CF research have weaknesses that include being acute rather than chronic infections, high levels of associated mortality, use laboratory strains of P. aeruginosa, or do n

Temperature modulates infection-associated metabolic responses in bloom-forming freshwater diatoms.

Warmer waters are reshaping unseen interactions at the base of aquatic food webs, with potential consequences for microalgal bloom dynamics and carbon transfer to higher trophic levels. Two major groups of aquatic parasites-chytrids and oomycetes-infect the same algal host, and changes in temperature can alter the dynamics of these infections and determine their success. Using laboratory-controlled synthetic communities, we investigated the effect of temperature on chytrid and oomycete infection dynamics in the bloom-forming freshwater diatom Ulnaria ulna. Our findings reveal complex dynamics,

The Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and Predictors of Infection and Mortality in 1068 Critically Ill Newborn Foals.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis has been defined in humans as the concurrent proven or suspected presence of microbial infection and the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Sepsis is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal foals. The clinical utility of using SIRS or its individual components to predict infection and mortality in critically ill foals is currently unknown. OBJECTIVES: Assess the ability of history and signalment, clinical findings, laboratory results, and SIRS-related indices to predict infection and mortality in critically ill foals. Acute onset psychiatric diseases after SARS-CoV-2 virus infection among pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric symptoms directly associated with SARS-CoV-2 virus infection have been reported sporadically in children. More cases of new-onset psychosis without severe cardinal symptoms, altered consciousness level, and psychogenic drug usage would offer compelling grounds for the association between the virus infection and psychosis. METHODS: We collected the clinical data of pediatric patients with new onset psychiatric symptoms after the SARS-CoV-2 virus infection from December 2022 to Feb 2023 and followed up with them for 1 year. These children did not have severe respiratory,

Bartonella spp. infection in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A pilot study.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a neurological disorder at the transition between normal cognitive decline and dementia. Despite the potential role of neuroinflammation in the pathogenesis of MCI, infectious triggers remain mostly unknown. Infection with Bartonella spp., a zoonotic bacterium, has recently been associated with diffuse neurological and psychiatric symptoms. Given the preferential endothelial localization of Bartonella spp. and the role of vascular changes in neurocognitive decline, we hypothesized that there is an association between Bartonella spp. infection and pathological

The clinical predictors of and vaccine protection against severe influenza infection in children.

Influenza infection in children causes a tremendous global burden. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical predictors of severe influenza among children. We retrospectively included hospitalized children who had laboratory-confirmed influenza infection and were admitted to a medical center in Taiwan between 2010 and 2018. Severe influenza infection was defined as needing intensive care. We compared demographics, comorbidities, vaccine status and outcomes between patients with severe and nonsevere infection. There were 1030 children hospitalized for influenza infection: 162 patients
