Complementary Sets of Autoantibodies Induced by SARS-CoV-2, Adenovirus and Bacterial Antigens Cross-React with Human Blood Protein Antigens in COVID-19 Coagulopathies.

COVID-19 patients often develop coagulopathies including microclotting, thrombotic strokes or thrombocytopenia. Autoantibodies are present against blood-related proteins including cardiolipin (CL), serum albumin (SA), platelet factor 4 (PF4), beta 2 glycoprotein 1 (β2GPI), phosphodiesterases (PDE), and coagulation factors such as Factor II, IX, X and von Willebrand factor (vWF). Different combinations of autoantibodies associate with different coagulopathies. Previous research revealed similarities between proteins with blood clotting functions and SARS-CoV-2 proteins, adenovirus, and bacteria

MicroRNA-26a systemic administration attenuates tumor formation in hepatocellular carcinoma mouse model.

MicroRNA (miRNA)-26a is one of the tumor suppressor genes that has been down regulated during the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This work was conducted to evaluate the possible preventive effect of exogenous miRNA-26a administration on diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-mediated HCC. Balb/C mice were intraperitoneally injected with saline (Normal group), DEN (HCC group) or miRNA-26a (HCC+miRNA-26a group). On week 8, 12, 16 and 20, the concentrations of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), des-gamma carboxyprothrombin (DCP), the levels of helper T cells-associated cytokines, and the vascular endothe

Significance of Non-Invasive Markers as Predictor of Esophageal Varices in Liver Cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: Upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy remains the gold standard for screening for esophageal varices but it has its own limitations. It is an invasive, expensive and uncomfortable procedure and needs clinical expertise. Accordingly, this study was conducted to establish the role of non-invasive markers for prediction of esophageal varices in liver cirrhosis. METHODS: A hospital based descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in Liver unit of National Academy of Medical Sciences, Bir Hospital, from October 2016 to September 2017. Complete blood count, liver function test, liv

Inherited thrombophilias and adverse pregnancy outcomes: a review of screening patterns and recommendations.

Historically, much controversy has existed regarding the association of inherited thrombophilias with adverse pregnancy outcomes. The current guidelines do not recommend screening unless a personal history of venous thromboembolism is present, but the authors' survey of physician screening patterns has suggested that up to 40% of physicians may screen contrary to the current guidelines. This article summarizes the existing evidence for each inherited thrombophilia and reviews the current guidelines.

Investigation of histological vascular invasion from preoperative evaluation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent living donor liver transplantation.

Tumor vascular invasion is one of the worst factors of metastasis and/or recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), leading to poor outcomes. We investigated the relevance between preoperative parameters and histological vascular invasion among HCC patients who underwent LDLT. We enrolled 27 HCC patients who underwent LDLT from September 2003 to February 2011 in our hospital. Their primary diseases were hepatitis C (n=16) hepatitis B (n=9), primary biliary cirrhosis (n=1), and cryptogenic liver cirrhosis (n=1). The 2 groups were posit

Coagulation assessment by rotation thrombelastometry in normal pregnancy.

We analysed changes in coagulation during normal pregnancy with a novel point-of-care device based on thrombelastometry (ROTEM). We compared the results obtained with those of standard coagulation tests in 104 patients: 20 non-pregnant women (controls) and 84 women in the first (T1, n = 17), second (T2, n = 9) and third (T3, n = 58) trimesters of pregnancy. We measured the clotting time (CT), the maximum clot firmness (MCF), the early clot amplitude at 5 and 15 minutes (CA(5), CA(15)) and the clot lysis index (CLI(30)) with four tests containing specific reagents. (a) The INTEM test involving

A role for thrombin receptor signaling in endothelial cells during embryonic development.

The coagulation protease thrombin triggers fibrin formation, platelet activation, and other cellular responses at sites of tissue injury. We report a role for PAR1, a protease-activated G protein-coupled receptor for thrombin, in embryonic development. Approximately half of Par1-/- mouse embryos died at midgestation with bleeding from multiple sites. PAR1 is expressed in endothelial cells, and a PAR1 transgene driven by an endothelial-specific promoter prevented death of Par1-/- embryos. Our results suggest that the coagulation cascade and PAR1 modulate endothelial cell function in developing

Outcome of Budd-Chiari syndrome: a multivariate analysis of factors related to survival including surgical portosystemic shunting.

The aim of this study was to assess the factors, including surgical portosystemic shunts, which affect survival in adults with Budd-Chiari syndrome. Multivariate retrospective analysis was performed using characteristics recorded at the time of diagnosis in 120 patients admitted from 1970 to 1992, of whom 82 were treated with surgical portosystemic shunts and 38 received only medical therapy. The 1-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates were 77 +/- 4%, 64 +/- 5%, and 57 +/- 6%, respectively. Survival was significantly better in the subgroup of patients diagnosed after versus before 1985. In both sub

[Artificial blood. Experimental studies on fluorocarbons as chemical blood substitutes].

Fluorocarbonates are organic compounds capable of carrying oxygen and surrendering it to tissues by means of biological sound modalities. Experimentation of an emulsion consisting of perfluorotripropylamine and perfluorodecaline (Fluosol DA 20%) as a blood substitute is reported. Acute (Ht less than 1%) and chronic morphological (Ht = 15%) studies were performed on rats, and a semi-acute biochemical and morphological protocol (Ht = 21%) was experimented in pigs. The first signs of altered cerebral electrical activity occurred at Ht = 2% in the acute experiments, and death due to respiratory ar
