Animated media content and the Papageno effect: Experimental evidence for the suicide-preventive potential of coping-oriented narratives in the series BoJack Horseman.

Suicide-related media portrayals can exert both harmful and protective effects on suicide-related outcomes, with the Papageno effect describing suicide-preventive influences of coping-oriented portrayals. Adult animated series have largely been absent from research, despite animation's popularity and its distinctive capacity to externalize psychological states, rendering experiences of mental health crises and recovery particularly accessible to viewers. Using an experimental design (N = 146) with pre- and post-measures of suicidal thoughts, participants watched a brief video clip from the Net

Vitamin E in dermatology.

Nutrition is essential for skin care, whether for rejuvenation, recovery, or regeneration after trauma or surgery; yet it is often overlooked. Although many nutrients have well-demonstrated benefits, others, such as vitamin E, a liposoluble antioxidant used for more than 50 years in dermatology, lack research and proof of their photoprotective and anti-tumorigenic properties. "Vitamin E" is the collective term for tocopherols and tocotrienols, with the main differences being their aliphatic tails and tocotrienols' higher antioxidant effect compared with tocopherols due to their unsaturated, is

The effect of incentive type on data quality and quantity in an experience sampling study in a student population.

As the experience sampling method (ESM) becomes a popular tool for capturing psychological phenomena, understanding how different incentives affect participant behavior and experiences is crucial for designing studies that maximize data quality and quantity. Our aim was to investigate the effects of three incentive types (a fixed payment, a fixed payment with personalized feedback, and payment per beep) on data quantity, data quality (e.g., careless responding), and participant experiences (e.g., burden). Students (N = 192, 64 per condition) completed 14 days of ESM with nine daily beeps. We u

BEYOND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD): STATE OF THE ART ON PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS IN WHICH EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR) CURRENTLY SHOWS CLINICAL EFFICACY.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was originally developed as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but its applications have expanded significantly in recent years. This narrative review explores the current state of evidence for EMDR's clinical efficacy across a spectrum of psychological disorders beyond PTSD. We examine findings from randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses - including the comprehensive systematic review by Scelles and Bulnes (2021) - that assess EMDR's impact on anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsi

Are Neurocognitive Deficits Associated With Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Children due to COVID-19?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Children with gastrointestinal symptoms due to COVID-19 may experience neurocognitive deficits. Symptoms include difficulty in concentration, memory and other cognitive functions. The deficits could be caused by the virus itself or due to the physical and psychological stress of the pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we examined 65 children, 32 children with gastrointestinal symptoms, and we compared them to 33 children without gastrointestinal symptoms due to COVID-19, to investigate whether gastrointestinal symptoms affected neurocognitive status in c

A Qualitative Exploration of Help-Seeking and Experiences of Diagnosis Among Men With Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is frequently understood as a diagnosis applicable mainly to women, despite population studies suggesting similar prevalence between men and women. The scarce available information suggests that compared to women, men may face additional gender-related barriers to diagnosis and treatment when attempting to engage with support and treatment for BPD-related difficulties. The current study presents a qualitative in-depth exploration of the help-seeking and diagnosis experiences of four men with BPD. Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, three themes w

Reward system activation improves recovery from acute myocardial infarction.

Psychological processes have a crucial role in the recovery from acute myocardial infarction (AMI), yet the underlying mechanisms of these effects remain elusive. Here we demonstrate the impact of the reward system, a brain network associated with motivation and positive expectations, on the clinical outcomes of AMI in mice. Chemogenetic activation of dopaminergic neurons in the reward system improved the remodeling processes and vascularization after AMI, leading to enhanced cardiac performance compared to controls. These effects were mediated through several physiological mechanisms, includi

[Evidence-based inpatient psychotherapy in borderline personality disorder].

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is frequent (prevalence in Germany between 0.7% and 4.5%) [11] and is associated with a high level of psychological stress and frequent emergency inpatient admissions. The provision of disorder-specific outpatient psychotherapy is still insufficient also in Germany. OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of the available data on the effectiveness of inpatient psychotherapy for BPD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A qualitative review on the effectiveness and therapy outcome predictors was conducted based on a literature search in PubMed. RESULTS

Implicit theories shape responses to social-evaluative threat.

It is important to understand factors that make one more or less vulnerable to the harmful effects of social threat. This study focuses on the role of implicit theories (also referred to as mindsets) in shaping responses to a potent form of social threat, namely social-evaluative threat (SET). 124 individuals participated in an experimental study in which they were induced to have an incremental theory or an entity theory about their social skills. Next, they were exposed to SET in the laboratory. Psychological and physiological responses were assessed including social self-esteem, rumination,

Reactive Attachment Disorder and Its Relationship to Psychopathology: A Systematic Review.

This study aimed to determine, through a systematic review, the relationship between Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and the presence of psychopathology in children and adolescents, and to determine the existence of differences in terms of internalising and externalising psychological problems between the RAD group and groups with other disorders or with typical development. Following the PRISMA methodology, a search was carried out in the Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus databases. The search yielded 770 results, of which only 25 met the inclusion criteria. The results indicate a relation

The "Partial Innocence" Effect: False Guilty Pleas to Partially Unethical Behaviors.

Although research has focused on the "innocence problem," "partial innocence" may also plague individuals who plead guilty to crimes they did not commit, but that are either comparable, more severe, or less severe than their actual crimes. Using a high-stake experimental paradigm and an immersive role-playing paradigm, we examined the psychology of partial innocence. Students were randomly induced (or imagined themselves) to be innocent, guilty, or partially innocent of committing an academic transgression and then given the choice to accept or reject a deal to avoid disciplinary sanction. Behavioral and Emotional Functioning of Children and Adolescents at the End of Treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Compared to Healthy Peers.

This study describes the behavioral and emotional adjustment of 77 children and adolescents 3 months post-treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), compared to 52 age and sex-matched healthy peers. Parents, teachers, and self-report ratings on the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2) were utilized to measure psychological function. While overall mean scores were in the average range for both groups, parents and teachers rated patients higher on behavior symptoms, internalizing problems and adaptive skill difficulties. No significant differences between gro

Mental Stress-Induced Myocardial Ischemia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize recent evidence on mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia (MSIMI), its mechanisms, and clinical significance. RECENT FINDINGS: MSIMI can occur in patients with normal cardiac stress testing, is only weakly related to severity of coronary artery disease (CAD), and it is often silent. Among patients with CAD, MSIMI is associated with a twofold increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events compared to those who do not have MSIMI. Certain groups such as young women with myocardial infarction and those with psychological comorbidities are more susceptible

FDA approves Ruxolitinib (Opzelura) for Vitiligo Therapy: A breakthrough in the field of dermatology.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized Ruxolitinib (Opzelura), as first at-home treatment for non-segmental vitiligo, an autoimmune condition that causes spots and patches of paler skin. Previously, it was used to treat atopic dermatitis, myelofibrosis, essential thrombocythemia, and polycythemia vera. It functions by lowering an individual's enhanced immune response, gradually promoting the development of new, healthy skin cells, and ultimately reintroducing pigment to the afflicted area. Using this topical lotion twice daily can not only produce even skin tones but also boost

"Degrees of Freedom": Comparing Mental Distress of Populations with Different Levels of Access to Care-Prisoners, Psychiatric Patients and General Population.

OBJECTIVES: The study presents an analysis of the risk for common mental disorders (CMDs) in populations with different levels of access to mental health care. METHODS: We merged and statistically compared the representative data of prisoners to data collected from psychiatric clinics and the general population. Participants across all samples completed the General Health Questionnaire. RESULTS: More than half of the inmates met the criteria for CMDs, while rates were 25% in the general population and 80% among psychiatric patients. The odds of prisoners being five times more likely to meet

Hormonal contraceptives as disruptors of competitive behavior: Theoretical framing and review.

Emerging evidence suggests that hormonal contraceptives (HCs) impact psychological outcomes through alterations in neurophysiology. In this review, we first introduce a theoretical framework for HCs as disruptors of steroid hormone modulation of socially competitive attitudes and behaviors. Then, we comprehensively examine prior research comparing HC users and non-users in outcomes related to competition for reproductive, social, and financial resources. Synthesis of 46 studies (n = 16,290) led to several key conclusions: HC users do not show the same menstrual cycle-related fluctuations in se
