Spatial heterogeneity of the relation between resting-state connectivity and blood flow: an important consideration for pharmacological studies.

Resting state fMRI (RSfMRI) and arterial spin labeling (ASL) provide the field of pharmacological Neuroimaging tool for investigating states of brain activity in terms of functional connectivity or cerebral blood flow (CBF). Functional connectivity reflects the degree of synchrony or correlation of spontaneous fluctuations--mostly in the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal--across brain networks; but CBF reflects mean delivery of arterial blood to the brain tissue over time. The BOLD and CBF signals are linked to common neurovascular and hemodynamic mechanisms that necessitate increased

Decelerating spread of West Nile virus by percolation in a heterogeneous urban landscape.

Vector-borne diseases are emerging and re-emerging in urban environments throughout the world, presenting an increasing challenge to human health and a major obstacle to development. Currently, more than half of the global population is concentrated in urban environments, which are highly heterogeneous in the extent, degree, and distribution of environmental modifications. Because the prevalence of vector-borne pathogens is so closely coupled to the ecologies of vector and host species, this heterogeneity has the potential to significantly alter the dynamical systems through which pathogens pr

A spatially unbiased atlas template of the human cerebellum.

This article presents a new high-resolution atlas template of the human, cerebellum and brainstem, based on the anatomy of 20 young healthy individuals. The atlas is spatially unbiased, i.e., the location of each structure is equal to the expected location of that structure across individuals in MNI space, a result that is cross-validated with an independent sample of 16 individuals. At the same time, the new template preserves the anatomical detail of cerebellar structures through a nonlinear atlas generation algorithm. In comparison to current whole-brain templates, it allows for an improved

Vanillin alleviates circadian disruption-induced cognitive impairment: involvement of gut microbiota alterations and tryptophan metabolism.

Circadian disruption (CD) is an important risk factor for cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases, potentially through disturbances in tryptophan (TRP) metabolism. This study investigated the protective effects of orally administered vanillin in a mouse model of CD. CD impaired spatial learning and recognition memory, whereas vanillin improved cognitive performance and corrected abnormal changes in TRP-related metabolites, including tryptophan, kynurenine (KYN), and kynurenic acid (KYNA). Vanillin also modulated the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota, enhanced intestin

Simultaneously mapping topography, surface electrical, and mechanical properties by scanning ion conductance microscopy.

Multi-parameter single-cell analysis and imaging are crucial for understanding fundamental cellular behavior and properties. Scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) is a powerful scanning probe microscope technique for studying the physical characteristics of individual cells under physiological conditions using a glass nanopipette as the scanning probe. Previously, SICM has been successfully developed for topography imaging, surface charge/potential mapping, and stiffness mapping of adherent cells. In this report, we demonstrated the integration of these three imaging modes to acquire thre

Drivers and distribution of soil arsenic in China's yellow river irrigation area by machine learning.

Arsenic contamination in irrigated agricultural soils poses global health and ecosystem risks. Using China's Yellow River Irrigation District as a case study, we developed an interpretable machine learning framework to predict soil arsenic distribution and identify its driving mechanisms. Among five models (XGBoost, RF, SVM, MLP, and MLR), XGBoost achieved the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.83, RMSE = 0.55). SHAP analysis revealed that cation exchange capacity, population density, and soil pH are the dominant factors controlling arsenic accumulation. Spatial autocorrelation further identified arseni

What Survivors Remembered: Cognitive and Experiential Themes in Trauma Narratives From the Deadliest Mass Shooting in Modern American History.

This study examined cognitive and experiential patterns in the trauma narratives of 42 survivors (74% women; Mage = 42.1) of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. We conducted a codebook thematic analysis of written narratives collected within one month of the event. We developed four themes: contextual memory (sensory-perceptual features, time, and space), physical injury, heroism, and contemplating mortality. Survivors recalled vivid sensory impressions, detailed spatial awareness organized around escape, and temporal distortions, inc

Tau profiling across Alzheimer's disease staging reveals vulnerability to disease pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Inter-individual variability in tau topography challenges the propagation hypothesis of tau aggregates. METHODS: To address this gap, we propose the Manifold Component Analysis (MCA), for identifying pseudo-continuous profiles informed by the spatial continuity of stage regions. RESULTS: Longitudinal and cross-sectional MCA in large aging cohort identified individual profiles (N = 753) expressing tau load in the entorhinal, limbic and neocortical regions. Using these profiles, we found neuropsychological and blood-based milestones of early and late disease stages. Finally, we als

Insights into early acne pathogenesis: Exploring intercellular dynamics and key dysregulated genes.

The comprehensive changes and shared dysregulated signaling pathways in early stage acne remains largely unexplored. In our recently published paper entitled "Analysis of Intracellular Communication Reveals Consistent Gene Changes Associated with Early-Stage Acne Skin," we utilized single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics datasets from acne patients to analyze cell communication. We identified dysregulated genes linked to inflammatory responses and hyperkeratinization. This commentary discusses potential new markers across major skin cell types, including endothelial cells, fibro

The preparation of MnO2/BSA/CdTe quantum dots complex for ratiometric fluorescence/ T1-weighted MRI detection of H2O2.

Hydrogen peroxide, as the second messenger in cells, plays an essential regulatory role in cell proliferation, differentiation and migration. How to effectively identify H2O2 signals, and detect H2O2 in circulating tumor cells, are essential for the early diagnosis of tumors. Herein a fluorescence and T1-weighted MR dual-mode imaging material, named MnBQ, has been successfully prepared and characterized. Based on the chemical redox reaction between MnBQ and H2O2, a fluorescence/T1-weighted MRI dual-mode sensor has been developed for quantitative analysis of H2O2, of which the lowest limit dete

Advancing root developmental research through single-cell technologies.

Single-cell RNA-sequencing has greatly increased the spatiotemporal resolution of root transcriptomics data, but we are still only scratching the surface of its full potential. Despite the challenges that remain in the field, the orderly aligned structure of the Arabidopsis root meristem makes it specifically suitable for lineage tracing and trajectory analysis. These methods will become even more potent by increasing resolution and specificity using tissue-specific single-cell RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptomics. Feeding multiple single-cell omics data sets into single-cell gene regula

Modeling Lyme disease transmission.

Lyme disease, a typical tick-borne disease, imposes increasing global public health challenges. A growing body of theoretical models have been proposed to better understand various factors determining the disease risk, which not only enrich our understanding on the ecological cycle of disease transmission but also promote new theoretical developments on model formulation, analysis and simulation. In this paper, we provide a review about the models and results we have obtained recently on modeling and analyzing Lyme disease transmission, with the purpose to highlight various aspects in the ecol

Ecology and geography of human monkeypox case occurrences across Africa.

As ecologic niche modeling (ENM) evolves as a tool in spatial epidemiology and public health, selection of the most appropriate and informative environmental data sets becomes increasingly important. Here, we build on a previous ENM analysis of the potential distribution of human monkeypox in Africa by refining georeferencing criteria and using more-diverse environmental data to identify environmental parameters contributing to monkeypox distributional ecology. Significant environmental variables include annual precipitation, several temperature-related variables, primary productivity, evapotr

Dead bird clusters as an early warning system for West Nile virus activity.

An early warning system for West Nile virus (WNV) outbreaks could provide a basis for targeted public education and surveillance activities as well as more timely larval and adult mosquito control. We adapted the spatial scan statistic for prospective detection of infectious disease outbreaks, applied the results to data on dead birds reported from New York City in 2000, and reviewed its utility in providing an early warning of WNV activity in 2001. Prospective geographic cluster analysis of dead bird reports may provide early warning of increasing viral activity in birds and mosquitoes, allow

Predicting independent dressing after stroke using path and neural network analyses.

Various motor and cognitive functions affect dressing skill. Evaluating the hierarchy of factors that influence performance in daily dressing and predicting this performance are crucial for effective rehabilitation. This study aims to clarify the interrelationships among motor function, cognitive function, dressing skill, speed of dressing, and performance of dressing in daily living, and to predict the latter using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. We conducted a retrospective study. A total of 243 stroke patients were enrolled in this study, which comprised 2 rounds of data analysi

Age-group differences between young and middle-aged adults in spatiotemporal EEG dynamics revealed by instantaneous frequency microstate analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The human brain exhibits complex functions that emerge from interactions among spatially distributed neural regions. Electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis has been widely adopted to capture transient topographies reflecting large-scale network dynamics; moreover, it has been linked to cognitive functions, intrinsic brain networks, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Building on this framework, we recently proposed a novel approach based on instantaneous frequency (IF), defined as the temporal derivative of the instantaneous phase, which characterizes microstates in a dimen

Application of the FEM Method to Modeling and Analysis of the Cold Thread Rolling Process-Part 1: Conditions for Ensuring a Plane State of Deformations.

The article concerns the application of the FEM method for the prediction of stress and deformation states in a workpiece during the thread rolling process (TR). The analysis covered a new kinematic variant of the TR process in which the basket of the head rotates and is torque-driven, while the workpiece is stationary and the head with the rollers moves axially relative to the workpiece. The TR process was considered as a geometrical and physical non-linear initial and boundary problem with non-linear, moving, and variable in time and space boundary conditions. The boundary conditions in the

Discriminating and understanding brain states in children with epileptic spasms using deep learning and graph metrics analysis of brain connectivity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is a brain disorder consisting of abnormal electrical discharges of neurons resulting in epileptic seizures. The nature and spatial distribution of these electrical signals make epilepsy a field for the analysis of brain connectivity using artificial intelligence and network analysis techniques since their study requires large amounts of data over large spatial and temporal scales. For example, to discriminate states that would otherwise be indistinguishable from the human eye. This paper aims to identify the different brain states that appear concerning the
