Effects of ionizing radiation on the blood brain barrier permeability to pharmacologically active substances.

Ionizing radiation can impair the integrity of the blood brain barrier (BBB). Data on early and late damage after brain irradiation are usually reported separately, yet a gradual transition between these two types has become evident. Signs appearing within 3 weeks after irradiation are considered to be early manifestations. The mechanism of radiation-effected integrity impairment of the BBB is discussed in relation to changes in morphological structures forming the BBB, the endothelium of intracerebral vessels, and in the surrounding astrocytes. Alterations in the function of the BBB are manif

Predicting Episodes of Hypovigilance in Intensive Care Units Using Routine Physiological Parameters and Artificial Intelligence: Derivation Study.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is prevalent in intensive care units (ICUs), often leading to adverse outcomes. Hypoactive delirium is particularly difficult to detect. Despite the development of new tools, the timely identification of hypoactive delirium remains clinically challenging due to its dynamic nature, lack of human resources, lack of reliable monitoring tools, and subtle clinical signs including hypovigilance. Machine learning models could support the identification of hypoactive delirium episodes by better detecting episodes of hypovigilance. OBJECTIVE: Develop an artificial intelligence pre

Impact of the Cardio-Meds Mobile App on Heart Failure Knowledge and Medication Adherence: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a prevalent chronic condition for which optimal management depends not only on guideline-directed medical therapy but also on patients' understanding of their disease, recognition of warning signs, and sustained medication adherence, which remains challenging in routine care. Mobile health interventions may support therapeutic education and self-management; however, many available apps lack validated content and local relevance. Cardio-Meds is a mobile app developed at Geneva University Hospitals to support HF self-management through structured educational con

Analysis of risk factors, clinical data, treatment outcomes for cats with feline infectious peritonitis using GS-441524 (2020-2024).

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a lethal, immune-mediated disease caused by feline coronavirus (FCoV). FIP was considered untreatable; however, GS-441524, a nucleoside analog, has become a hopeful antiviral treatment. Despite its effectiveness, survival outcomes depend on several prognostic factors, especially the type of disease and clinical presentation. This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of GS-441524 in a large population of cats with FIP in Iran, examine survival rates, and identify crucial prognostic factors affecting treatment outcomes. Additionally, it evaluates alte

Health impact of supplying safe drinking water on patients having various clinical manifestations of fluorosis in an endemic village of west bengal.

BACKGROUND: Excessive fluoride in drinking water causes dental, skeletal and non-skeletal fluorosis which is encountered in endemic proportions in several parts of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) guideline value and the permissible limit of fluoride as per the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is 1.5 mg/L. Studies showed that withdrawal of sources identified for fluoride, often leads to reduction of fluoride in the body fluids (re-testing urine and serum after a week or ten days) and results in the disappearance of non-skeletal fluorosis within a short duration of 10-15 days. Breaking Bad News in the Emergency Department.

AUDIENCE: The primary audience for this simulation is emergency medicine (EM) residents, but this curriculum could also be used for EM-bound medical students. INTRODUCTION: Breaking bad news is a difficult but necessary skill for EM physicians. Bad news can range from informing family that a patient is in the emergency department (ED), to shared decision making regarding a life-threatening situation, to family notification of patient death.1 Although there are many structured approaches to death notification and breaking bad news, such as GRIEV_ING2 and SPIKES,3 EM physicians often lack confi

Antioxidant evaluation, phytochemical profiling, and in silico investigation of Asparagus setaceus root metabolites as potential hepatoprotective agents.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease is characterized by chronic endobronchial infection resulting in progressive pulmonary destruction; this is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. Neutrophils are the primary effector cells responsible for the progressive deterioration of lung function. Peptido-leukotriene B4 antagonists, new anti-inflammatory agents that block the neutrophil-dominated inflammation, could have had the potential for long-term use. A trial on the pharmacokinetics of amelubant administered orally as a single dose of up to 75 mg in pediatric patients with CF and 300 mg in adult

[Congenital diaphragmatic hernia in older children].

The incidence of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is about 4.8/10,000 live births. Its typical clinical presentation is respiratory distress occurring immediately after birth or in the first few hours or days of a child's life. It is characterized by a high mortality rate. Exceptionally, CDH can occur at an older age, its symptoms then frequently reflecting gastrointestinal obstruction or mild respiratory symptoms. In such cases CDH presents a far more complex diagnostic problem. The paper presents the cases of two girls without typical symptomatology, aged 5.5 and 10 years, in whom CDH w

BACKGROUND: Triage is a cornerstone of emergency care, with profound impacts on care prioritization and mortality. However, implementation of structured triage systems across sub-Saharan Africa has been inconsistent, hindered by context-specific challenges. Little is known about the landscape of triage in public emergency departments (EDs) in Kenya. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to characterize triage infrastructure, practices, and staff perceptions across public EDs in coastal Kenya. METHODS: In February 2026, trained study staff administered a standardized questionnaire to clinical
