One hundred seven domestic cats from The Philippines were serologically tested to establish the prevalence of Bartonella infection. A subset of 31 of these cats also had whole blood collected to tentatively isolate Bartonella strains. Bartonella henselae and B. clarridgeiae were isolated from 19 (61%) of these cats. Bartonella henselae type I was isolated from 17 (89%) of the 19 culture-positive cats. Six cats (31%) were infected with B. clarridgeiae, of which four were coinfected with B. henselae. Sixty-eight percent (73 of 107) and 65% (70 of 107) of the cats had antibodies to B. henselae an

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is often atypical, and characteristically relapses after treatment. We treated 10 HIV infected patients (9 men) with parasitologically confirmed VL with liposomal amphotericin B ("AmBisome': L-AMB) at a dose of 4 mg/kg/day on days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 17, 24, 31, and 38. Patients were hospitalized for the first 5 days, and were monitored during, and 1 week and 1, 3 and 6 months after, L-AMB therapy. There were no serious adverse events, and L-AMB was well tolerated. 9/10 patients completed therapy, one pat

To identify the prognostic significance of hemophilia- and virus-related factors, the authors undertook a survival analysis among 644 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected subjects enrolled in the Multicenter Hemophilia Cohort Study between 1985 and 1993. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was the leading cause of death, followed by hemorrhage and hepatic disease. Adverse prognostic factors included older age and CD4-positive lymphocyte values below 14 percent either at entry (age-adjusted mortality rate ratio (RR) = 6.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.4-12.1) or after entry (time

To assess the incidence and prevalence of delta hepatitis in homosexual men, we tested serum specimens for delta markers in participants in two previous studies: a hepatitis B vaccine trial among homosexual men conducted in the early 1980's and the Centers for Disease Control sentinel counties hepatitis study for 1983-1984. In the vaccine trial, men found to be hepatitis B surface antigen positive at the time of enrollment and those men who had serologic evidence of new hepatitis B virus infection during follow-up were tested. In the sentinel counties study that determined risk factors for vir

Deltaviruses are circular, negative-sense RNA agents that replicate autonomously but depend on heterologous envelope glycoproteins for spread. Only partial sequences of deltaviruses had been reported from marsupials. By reanalysing public metatranscriptomes from the Australian fat-tailed dunnart (Sminthopsis crassicaudata), we assemble the first complete marsupial deltavirus genome and test its replication in human and animal cells. The fat-tailed dunnart deltavirus (FtDDeV) is a 1,680-nt circular RNA that folds into a canonical unbranched rod-like structure and encodes a 195-aa delta antigen

INTRODUCTION: Bronchiolitis is the leading cause of infant hospitalizations worldwide, primarily driven by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
METHODS: This multicenter retrospective comparative study assessed the impact of immunoprophylaxis with nirsevimab against RSV on bronchiolitis-related hospitalizations in Italy during the 2024-2025 winter season.
RESULTS: Data from nine Italian hospitals showed a substantial 48% decrease in bronchiolitis admissions compared to the previous season (438 vs. 832 admissions). Among hospitalized infants, only 23% had received immunoprophylaxis. RSV positiv

RT-PCR is the gold standard to determine the etiology of respiratory tract viral infections caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), influenza A, influenza B, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Multiplex testing panels can test for infections or coinfections with these viruses at the point of care. Treatment using antiviral drugs and/or monoclonal antibodies and public health measures using vaccines and specific infection prevention practices depend on accurate diagnoses. The AMDI Fast PCR Mini Respiratory Panel is a 10-minute RT-PCR test for use at the point

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. Although relatively common in Caucasian populations, CF is rare in China, where it frequently presents with non-specific respiratory symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis and frequent coinfections with multidrug-resistant pathogens.

The co-occurrence of MOG and NMDAR antibodies has been reported in a limited number of cases and is termed the overlapping syndrome (MNOS). Viral coinfections have been identified in a subset of patients with MNOS. Herein, we report the first case of MNOS with concomitant cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection detected in cerebrospinal fluid, a finding that helps to further explore the relationship between viral infection and MNOS. A previously healthy 49-year-old man developed fever and behavioral abnormalities following prodromal symptoms. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the CSF ide

The human gut microbiota is essential for supporting the host's health and immune system. Imbalances in this microbiota, known as dysbiosis, are associated with numerous inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Despite extensive research on bacterial components, the significant modulatory role of eukaryotic gut inhabitants, particularly intestinal parasites, remains largely overlooked. While traditionally viewed as pathogens, emerging evidence highlights a profound duality in their role, suggesting they are integral and active modulators of the gut microbiota and challenging the conventional view

Acute hepatitis B infection often features gastrointestinal symptoms and jaundice, as well as elevated transaminase levels and the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen and immunoglobulin M antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen. More than 95% of adults clear an acute infection spontaneously. Chronic hepatitis B infection is diagnosed when hepatitis B surface antigen is present for at least 6 months. Evaluation of chronic cases includes a family history of hepatocellular carcinoma, assessment of liver function and fibrosis risk, and serologies for viral coinfections and immunity. The goal of

BACKGROUND: Penile urethritis is a common medical condition, usually caused by sexually transmitted pathogens such as Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) or Mycoplasma genitalium (MG). Although the causative pathogens cannot be reliably distinguished based on the clinical presentation alone, symptom-oriented empirical antibiotic therapy is often administered in practical care.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a summary of the recommendations from the S3 guidelines on the management of male adolescents and adults with symptoms of urethritis. The development of the guidelines wa

Hemoparasitoses in domestic cats are increasingly recognized as an emerging challenge for veterinary medicine and public health due to their subclinical persistence and zoonotic potential. This study aimed to detect Anaplasma platys, Bartonella henselae, and hemotropic mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma haemofelis [Mhf] and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’ [CMhm]) in clinically healthy cats from Pelotas, southern Brazil, using molecular assays. A total of 151 blood samples collected between 2022 and 2024 were analyzed by conventional and nested PCR. Detection rates were 21.9% (33/151) for (A) platys,

Periodontal diseases in pediatric subjects represent a challenging and relatively underexplored area compared to the extensive data available about periodontal diseases in adults. The present narrative review aims to explore the periodontal status and the related subgingival and/or salivary microbial profiles in pediatric subjects (≤18 years), focusing also on the state of health or systemic diseases. In healthy periodontium, early colonizers, such as Streptococcus and Actinomyces spp., dominate the subgingival microbiota, supporting an eubiosis state. Low levels of Candida albicans and latent

BACKGROUND: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a respiratory pathogen that has gained increasing recognition due to advancements in molecular diagnostic tools, which have improved its detection and characterization. While severe disease manifestations are traditionally associated with pediatric, elderly, or immunocompromised patients, hMPV-related pneumonia in immunocompetent adults remains underexplored.
METHODS: This case report describes a 68-year-old male who developed severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) caused by hMPV despite being immunocompetent and having no significant comorbiditi
