The Effect of Atopy in the Prevalence of Contact Sensitization: The Experience of a Greek Referral Center.

Contact dermatitis is a well-known skin condition, which is related to stimuli and environmental exposure to chemicals, affecting all ages as well as both genders. In the present work, we attempt to investigate the patterns of contact sensitization, with respect to the personal history of atopy (AT), in Greece in a large number of allergens, using patch testing. The retrospective analysis included clinical routine data of 1978 patients collected from 2014 to 2016 in the Laboratory of Patch Testing, National Referral Centre of Occupational Dermatoses. Sensitization, in all cases, was tested wit

COVID-19: An overview for dermatologists.

Numerous unexplained pneumonia cases were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) by Wuhan, China, in December 2020. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), a zoonotic pathogen, came into sight, spreading coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) all over the globe. Association of cutaneous signs and symptoms with COVID-19 is being studied worldwide, principally, to determine if these dermatoses can help in early recognition of SARS-CoV-2 infection. These dermatological manifestations can range from erythematous rash, urticaria to livedo reticularis, and acrocyanosis in

Cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity and contact sensitivity after cutaneous Trichophyton mentagrophytes infection.

The histopathology of cutaneous lesions and trichophytin skin test responses was examined by light microscopy after the infection of strain 2 guinea pigs with Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Skin biopsies were fixed and stained with procedures which allowed differentiation of the polymorphonuclear granulocytic leukocytes that were present in lesions or skin test reactions. Basophils comprised about one-third of the leukocytes infiltrating the 24 to 48-h trichophytin skin test reactions of guinea pigs sensitized by a cutaneous T. mentagrophytes infection. These results were comparable to the perce

Expression of OKT6 antigen by Langerhans cells in patch test reactions.

Previous studies in humans and guinea pigs indicate that Langerhans cells (LC) participate in elicitation of allergic contact dermatitis. The number and morphology of LC was determined in acute and healed allergic patch test sites, control (petrolatum) sites and normal skin in nickel-sensitive individuals using OKT6 monoclonal antibody and avidin-biotin/peroxidase labeling. Compared to normal skin, the staining intensity and number of epidermal LC was significantly increased in allergic (p less than 0.02) and petrolatum control (p less than 0.02) sites, and in 6- to 8-week old allergic patch t

Skin diseases in Greek and immigrant children in Athens.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the spectrum of skin diseases affecting children in Greece. METHODS: We retrospectively studied data for 4071 children, aged 0-12 years, who were examined and diagnosed with dermatoses at the outpatient clinic of a university dermatological hospital between December 2005 and August 2007. To evaluate changes in disease patterns, these data were compared with data for a cohort of 12,700 children diagnosed with skin diseases at the same clinic two to three decades earlier (in 1977, 1980, and 1983). RESULTS: The most frequent disease was dermatitis/ec

Study of Latex Glove Associated Dermatoses Among Nurses in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Natural rubber latex (NRL) is processed from Hevea brasiliensis trees. Allergic reactions to certain proteins in the latex manifest as immediate hypersensitivity reactions and allergic reactions to chemicals added to latex during processing manifest as allergic contact dermatitis. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of developing latex allergies. As little data is available from India, this study was directed toward identifying the prevalence of latex glove-related dermatoses among nurses and the factors leading to it. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study was unde

A case of COVID-19 with papulovesicular rash that progressed to retiform purpura, accompanied by cherry angiomas.

CONTEXT: Various skin manifestations have been reported in coronavirus disease. It may be difficult to determine the etiology of these lesions in view of the increased frequency of handwashing during the pandemic, along with occurrences of irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis due to disinfectant use; usage of herbal medicine and supplements to strengthen the immune system; and urticarial or maculopapular drug eruptions due to COVID-19 treatment. The variety of associated skin manifestations seen with COVID-19 makes it challenging to identify virus-specific skin manifesta

Biotin Is Required for the Zinc Homeostasis in the Skin.

Patients with biotin deficiency present symptoms that are similar to those in patients with acrodermatitis enteropathica (inherent zinc deficiency). However, the association between biotin and zinc deficiency remains unknown. We have previously shown that epidermal keratinocytes of mice fed zinc-deficient (ZD) diets secreted more adenosine triphosphate (ATP) than those of mice fed zinc-adequate (ZA) diets and that epidermal Langerhans cells are absent in ZD mice. Langerhans cells highly express CD39, which potently hydrolyzes ATP into adenosine monophosphate (AMP). Thus, a lack of Langerhans c

European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA): polysensitization, 2009-2014.

BACKGROUND: Polysensitization, defined as being allergic to three or more haptens from the European baseline series, is considered to reflect increased susceptibility to developing a contact allergy, and is likely to be associated with an impaired quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalences of polysensitization across Europe and to analyse factors associated with polysensitization. METHODS: Patch test data collected by the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA; www.essca-dc.org) in consecutively patch tested patients from January 2009 to December 2014, compris

Effect of glove occlusion on the skin barrier.

Wet work tasks are the most common exposures leading to occupational irritant contact dermatitis. Use of liquid-proof gloves is recommended when performing wet work, however, gloves may also contribute to impairment of the skin barrier and development of irritant contact dermatitis. The aim of this study is to review the literature on the effects of glove occlusion on skin barrier function. The PubMed database was searched up to 1 February 2015 for articles on the association between glove occlusion and skin barrier function, including human studies only and in English. Only experimental studi

Dendritic cells: biology of the skin.

Allergic contact dermatitis results from a T-cell-mediated, delayed-type hypersensitivity immune response induced by allergens. Skin dendritic cells (DCs) play a central role in the initiation of allergic skin responses. Following encounter with an allergen, DCs become activated and undergo maturation and differentiate into immunostimulatory DCs and are able to present antigens effectively to T cells. The frequency of allergic skin disorders has increased in the past decades. Therefore, the identification of potential sensitizing chemicals is important for skin safety. Traditionally, predictiv

Do 'cinnamon-sensitive' patients react to cinnamate UV filters?

BACKGROUND: Use of sunscreens has increased dramatically worldwide, and some sunscreen chemicals may be allergens. Ultraviolet (UV) filters are added to various cosmetic products. Cinnamate UV filters are structurally related to cinnamon-related fragrances. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if 'cinnamon-sensitive' patients show positive photopatch tests to cinnamate UV filters and, therefore, should avoid these UV filters. METHOD: We photopatch tested cinnamon-sensitive patients (n = 18) with cinnamon, cinnamon-related fragrances, Myroxylon pereirae, and two cinnamate UV

Skin disease among staff in a large Korean nursing home.

Although previous studies have documented reasonably high rates of skin disease among nursing home staff, the prevalence among Korean workers is not well known. For this investigation we selected a large Korean nursing home and distributed a skin disease questionnaire to all staff. Questions included job title, job description, employment history, working hours, patient contact and the occurrence of skin disease over the past 12 months. Workers who reported a dermatological problem then underwent skin examinations conducted by specialist occupational physicians and a dermatologist. Contact der

Thimerosal in the detection of clinically relevant allergic contact reactions.

Thimerosal, a mercuric derivative of thiosalicylic acid, is a preservative used in several types of consumer products, including cosmetics, ophthalmic and otolaryngologic medications, and vaccines. As a result of allergic reactions and environmental concerns, its use has declined significantly during the past 2 decades. During a 5-year study at the University of Kansas Medical Center, 574 patients were patch tested to the North American Contact Dermatitis Group's standard allergen tray, which included thimerosal. The demographic data from thimerosal-allergic and nonallergic persons were compar
