Behaviour symptoms among severely and profoundly mentally retarded patients. A 16-18 year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the natural history and evolution of behaviour symptoms and patterns in severely and profoundly mentally retarded adults. This paper reports a cohort study of 100 such adults. METHOD: Abnormal behaviour symptoms and patterns have been followed, using a carer rating scale and the modified Manifest Abnormality Scale of Goldberg's Clinical Interview Schedule (1970) by the same two consultant psychiatrists in 1975, 1981 and 1992. RESULTS: Emotional withdrawal, stereotypes and eye avoidance are particularly persistent. Carer ratings of noisiness and social withdr

A discrepancy in epiretinal proliferation detection between preoperative OCT and intraoperative observation in macular hole.

PURPOSE: Epiretinal proliferation (EP) is associated with poor visual and anatomical outcomes in eyes with macular holes (MHs). A preoperative cross-sectional OCT can detect EP; however, We observed that some cases with intraoperatively visible EP showed no evidence of EP on preoperative OCT. This study assessed the discrepancy between EP observed by OCT and during surgery. METHODS: We defined OCT-EP as epiretinal materials with homogeneous medium reflectivity observed in cross-sectional OCT. We defined surgical-EP as yellowish tissues contiguous to the hole during the membrane peeling. We de

Morphological and biomechanical analyses of the human healthy and glaucomatous aqueous outflow pathway: Imaging-to-modeling.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Intraocular pressure (IOP) is maintained via a dynamic balance between the production of aqueous humor and its drainage through the trabecular meshwork (TM), juxtacanalicular connective tissue (JCT), and Schlemm's canal (SC) endothelium of the conventional outflow pathway. Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is often associated with IOP elevation that occurs due to an abnormally high outflow resistance across the outflow pathway. Outflow tissues are viscoelastic and actively interact with aqueous humor dynamics through a two-way fluid-structure interaction coupling. Wh

Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia: A Rare Disorder With Bilateral Infantile Glaucoma.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a disorder that occurs due to abnormalities of ectodermal structures such as skin, teeth, hair, nails, and eccrine glands. Approximately 200 different conditions have been identified as ED, the most common being hypohidrotic ED. It is characterized by hypotrichosis (sparse scalp or body hair), hypodontia (absent or malformed teeth), and hypohidrosis (reduced ability to sweat). It is also associated with distinctive facial features, such as the prominent forehead, thick lips, flattened nasal bridge, and thin wrinkled skin. Ocular anomalies are less frequently observ

Syndrome of myelinated retinal nerve fibers, myopia, and amblyopia: a review.

Myelinated retinal nerve fibers are developmental anomalies that are present in approximately 1% of all eyes. They may be associated with ipsilateral high myopia and amblyopia, and also may occur in association with various ocular and systemic abnormalities. Lesions may be congenital or acquired, static or dynamic, and can regress in the setting of several described conditions. The pathogenesis is thought to be due to the presence of ectopic oligodendrocyte-like cells in the retina as a result of a development or acquired insult. Visual acuity is typically poor to begin with, and the improveme
