Treatment response to maxillary expansion and protraction.

A prospective clinical trial was conducted to determine the skeletal and dental contributions to the correction of overjet and overbite in Class III patients. Thirty patients (12 males and 18 females with a mean age of 8.4 +/- 1.7 years) were treated consecutively with protraction headgear and fixed maxillary expansion appliances. For each patient, a lateral cephalogram was taken 6 months before treatment (T0); immediately before treatment (T1); and 6 months after treatment (T2). The time period (T1-T0) represented changes due to 6 months of growth without treatment; (T2-T1) represented 6 mont

Masochistic habits in a child patient: A case report and its management.

This is a case report of diagnosis and management of masochistic habits, a special type of mechanical trauma to the gingival tissue known as self-inflicted lesions, also termed as gingivitis artefacta. Self-inflicted injuries can be premeditated, accidental, or can also result from an uncommon habit. The purpose of this article is to review clinical findings in a 6-year-old female patient who had a habit of left forearm sucking since birth and also presented with a nail-biting habit which caused a gingival stripping on the left buccal surface of maxillary first and second deciduous molars. A f

Dentigerous cysts in four quadrants: a rare and first reported case.

The dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst which usually occurs in the second and third decade of life. Dentigerous cyst is one of the most prevalent types of odontogenic cysts associated with partially erupted, developing, or impacted teeth. The mandibular third molars have a high predictability followed by maxillary canines. Occurrence of dentigerous cyst bilaterally is generally observed in syndromic cases. Non-syndromic dentigerous cyst occurring bilaterally or involving both arches at the same time is very rare. This presented case is rare and unique in which all four quadra

Paradental (mandibular inflammatory buccal) cyst.

The paradental cyst is commonly misinterpreted when associated with atypical clinical and radiographic characteristics, in turn causing diagnostic problems. For this reason, the study of the differential diagnosis of this lesion has become extremely important. In addition, the correlation of clinical, histologic, and radiographic findings are also of great value in obtaining accurate diagnoses. The minor variations in the clinical appearance of paradental cysts make it feasible to consider the two main groups of cysts separately: those associated with 1st and 2nd permanent molars of the mandib

The postnatal development of the temporal part of the human temporomandibular joint. A quantitative study on skulls.

The morphology of the temporal part of the human temporomandibular joint (TMJ) changes drastically during postnatal development. The glenoid fossa will acquire its characteristic S shape and a tubercle will develop. The combined results of the literature and of this study allow a reconstruction of the actual growth processes. The roof of the glenoid fossa appears to enlarge forward by remodeling while sagittal and vertical growth is mainly achieved by deposition at the top of the tubercle. These latter changes result in a steeper slope of the eminence and take place in 3 phases, parallelling t

A case of localized juvenile periodontitis: treatment and 3 years follow-up with superimposable radiographs.

A 17-year-old male patient with localized juvenile periodontitis was treated by subgingival instrumentation with full thickness flap on the lower molars, combined with a 3-week course of systemic tetracycline, and a programme of supervised oral hygiene. The treatment was rapidly followed by dramatic clinical and microbiological improvement. However, despite good oral hygiene, gingival inflammation recurred at regular intervals. It was necessary to maintain the clinical results by periodic subgingival instrumentation with an ultrasonic scaler. Healing of alveolar bone was monitored in the lower

Evaluating tooth eruption on sealant efficacy.

For patients aged 5 to 9 and 11 to 14, 100 occlusal surfaces on newly erupting permanent molars were treated with a self-curing pit and fissure sealant. All teeth were categorized according to stage of eruption and sealant thickness of the coating applied. After 36 months, 75 surfaces were examined for a final evaluation; 52 surfaces (70%) did not need retreatment. Of the 23 surfaces retreated as a result of sealant loss or marginal deterioration, 18 were retreated only once in the six recall evaluations. Those molars treated originally with the operculum covering the distal marginal ridge of

Glass inserts. A new dimension in restorative dentistry.

Pediatric restorative dentistry has traditionally involved the placement of a stainless steel crown following a pulpotomy in primary molars. The increased exposure to systemic and topical fluorides has significantly decreased smooth surface caries, yet occlusal pit and fissure caries remains a problem. Occlusal caries involving the pulp of primary molars, leaving the supporting walls intact, may be restored conservatively with the use of glass inserts. The glass inserts provide the major volume of the restoration, therefore a minimal amount of posterior composite resin is necessary. The glass

Hypodontia and hyperdontia of permanent teeth in Hong Kong schoolchildren.

This study was performed to determine the prevalence of hypodontia and hyperdontia of permanent teeth amongst Southern Chinese children in Hong Kong. The sample consisted of 1093 12-yr-old children on whom a panoramic radiograph was taken. The prevalence of congenitally missing teeth (third molars excluded) was 6.1% in boys, 7.7% in girls, and 6.9% for both sexes combined. On the average, each child was missing 1.5 teeth. The most commonly absent tooth was the mandibular incisor, affecting 58.7% of the children with hypodontia. Thirty children (2.7%) had supernumerary teeth, with a male:female

Dental Microwear and Diets of Late Miocene Primates From Rudabánya, Hungary.

OBJECTIVES: This study focuses on a dental microwear texture analysis of European pliopithecids and dryopithecins from the Miocene primate site of Rudabánya, Hungary. The goal is to determine whether these taxa, found in part together in the same deposits, differed in their food preferences, or at least consumed, on a daily basis, in a manner that might have facilitated sympatry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here we report on a molar surface texture analysis of all available fossil primates from Rudabánya that preserve antemortem microwear. This includes both Anapithecus hernyaki (n = 14) and Rudap

Prosthetic-Driven Autotransplantation with the Assistance of Medical Image-Processing Software and a Real-Time Navigation System: A Case Report.

Autotransplantation has been proven as a viable method of reconstructing missing teeth. While preparing the recipient site, the bone reduction location depends largely on the surgeon's experience. Inappropriate overpreparation can cause biologic and esthetic complications, such as buccal or lingual bone resorption. This paper provides an innovative method to aid clinicians in precisely preparing a recipient site with the assistance of medical image-processing software and a real-time navigation system. This case report presents the autotransplantation of a mandibular molar using this technique

Cost-Effectiveness of Managing MIH Teeth.

Numerous therapeutic approaches are available for managing molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH); however, the cost-effectiveness of these strategies is underexplored. Economic evaluations are crucial for determining the optimal treatment approach to individual patients' requirements. We systematically reviewed the literature on the topic to have a more comprehensive discussion about these issues. Systematic searches were carried out. After a two-stage selection, 11 studies were included for synthesis. These studies could be divided into three groups according to the type of information given

Do hypomineralized teeth affect parents' emotional states and attitudes more than other discoloration conditions?

Discoloration poses a significant esthetic issue, and parents' opinions and emotional states may vary regarding different types of discoloration, such as molar incisor hypomineralization, caries or chromogenic bacteria. This study aimed to assess parent's emotional state and attitudes towards discoloration in primary and permanent teeth. A two-part questionnaire was designed, consisting of questions about demographic data and simulated visuals of different primary and permanent teeth discoloration conditions. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to determine the emotional state, while parent
